Wonderful slideshow, Charles! I actually think that the elderly couple were celebrating their Golden 50th wedding anniversary (1909 to 1959). Hence, the golden cake.

HEY CHARLES ! Could you do a presentation on basement rec rooms sometime? those were big when I grew up in 50s and 60s. some were almost nicer than the rest of the house! My neighbors had one that was made to look like Hawaii.

When I was in young - lo, so many, many years ago - my family lived in Scottsdale and we had the obligatory pool. Rectangular in shape as how impractical my father thought, to have a “freeform” folly. Anywho, the professional pool cleaner came once a week but in the interim, one of my daily chores was to clean the pool filter. (I lived for that allowance money.) Sweet Baby Jesus, the creatures that would die and be trapped in that filter system. Giant-ass spiders, scorpions but thankfully no Gila Monsters. To this day, decades later, the memories of swimming at 3am, only the sound of a million goddamn Carrier air-conditioning units humming, and still 80°F, are the stuff of heaven.
