In this video, I respond to Charles Stanley. Mr. Stanley has taught that since we are Christ's sheep and His sheep “know His voice” (John 10:4), there must be some perceptible clues as to the nature of His conversation. He argues that the believer's normal experience is to hear God accurately and that committed believers can identify God's voice. In this upload, I refute Charles Stanley's faulty understanding of John 10 by using Pastor Jim Osman's solid exegesis.

@Coreficus They can't. But all the prophecy we need for our lives as Christians has already been provided in the Bible. Hear Him through His written Word. There's enough there to study and obey for a lifetime and still come up short in understanding. We don't need more prophecy; we need to revel in and study and obey what we've already been given.
@Jesusmyhopeofglory

@Coreficus The gift of prophet (Ephesians 4:11) seems to have been a temporary gift given by Christ for the laying of the foundation of the church. Prophets were foundational to the church (Ephesians 2:20). The prophet proclaimed a message from the Lord to the early believers. Sometimes a prophet’s message was revelatory (new revelation and truth from God) and sometimes a prophet’s message was predictive (see Acts 11:28 and 21:10). The early Christians did not have the complete Bible. Some early Christians did not have access to any of the books of the New Testament. The New Testament prophets “filled the gap” by proclaiming God’s message to the people who would not have access to it otherwise. The last book of the New Testament (Revelation) was not completed until late in the first century. So, the Lord sent prophets to proclaim God’s Word to His people. Are there true prophets today? If the purpose of a prophet was to reveal truth from God, why would we need prophets if we have the completed revelation from God in the Bible? If prophets were the “foundation” of the early church, are we still building the “foundation” today? God can do whatever he wants he is God so if he chose to give someone a message to deliver to someone else? Absolutely! Can Do God choose to reveal truth to someone in a supernatural way and enable that person to deliver that message to others? Absolutely! But is this the biblical gift of prophecy? No.

@Coreficus Whatever the case, whenever a person claims to be speaking for God (the essence of prophecy) the key is to compare what is said with what the Bible says. If God were to speak through a person today, it would be in 100% complete agreement with what God has already said in the Bible. God does not contradict Himself. 1 John 4:1 instructs us, “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21 declares, “Do not treat prophecies with contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good.” So, whether it is a “word from the Lord” or a supposed prophecy, our response should be the same. Compare what is said to what the Word of God says. If it contradicts the Bible, throw it out. If it agrees with the Bible, pray for wisdom and discernment as to how to apply the message (2 Timothy 3:16-17; James 1:5).

Although “hearing Gods voice” is abused today particularly by the word of faith crowd and the scripture is the way we know the truth, let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water. God does speak to us through the Holy Spirit providing direction for decisions in our life’s direction in particular a true call for one to enter ministry. Sadly many who will claim God doesn’t speak to us don’t want to be the bondservant of Christ we are called to be as believers.

The Apostle Paul in Romans 1:10 wrote that he desired “by the will of God” to visit the Romans. This itself shows that even to go do the Lords work one needs to go in the will of God because it is His work we are doing, not work of our own will. So we must be able to discern and follow Gods will that He gets all the glory and praise and not seeking recognition for ourselves. There is a new KZbin channel called “ScriptureOnly101” doing a study of the book of Romans where walking in Gods will is discussed in detail.

Charles Stanley has always preached salvation through Christ alone. Whether or not you agree with his interpretation on how to hear God’s voice is certainly up for debate but it does not make him someone to avoid. I like much of what Polite Leader says but I don’t agree on everything he says either. And the same goes for Justin Peters. I respect him and like a lot of his teachings but also disagree with him on a number of issues as well ( especially his Calvinist beliefs which doesn’t surprise me since Peters is a devotee of John McArthur but that’s another issue.. ) point is as long as the person is preaching Christ crucified, salvation alone through Jesus Christ, and the Word of God as final authority, we can have have differences on certain issues. Just pray and always ask the Lord for discernment.

Allen, I like your videos but I think you are wrong on this one. God not only speaks to His children through His Word, but also He speaks to us through other people and circumstances as well. If Jesus Christ says that His sheep hear His voice, who are you to say that they don't? Yes I know you have been to seminary school or some Bible college and that is great. However, neither you nor Justin Peters have a monopoly on the Word of God. Charles Stanley has much more experience and years of studying the Word of God than you. He also has had systematic biblical training like you. If God only speaks to His children through His Word, then what about all the pastors who get up every week and preach the Word? Is that not the Holy Spirit speaking through them? I believe that scholastic and intellect are great, I have five degrees myself. However, sometimes too much intellect can hinder the spiritual things of God. No person can master the Bible which is the Word of God. If one thinks that he or she can, they are being deceived by the devil. Oh yes the small still voice does exist. Just because you have never experienced it, does not mean it is not true. As far as the book " God Does Not Whisper", that's just a another book written by a man. He too is not God. Other than that your videos are great. Take care my brother. The Bowtie Professor!

The Holy Spirit does guide and teach us all things BUT through the word of God as the Spirit will not contradict himself or any other member of the Trinity by uttering audible voices that scripture doesn't support. God does motivate us, move us, and guide us to where He wants us to be, but He does it all without uttering one single word. Polite Leader is correct in that we know the voice of Jesus through his calling of us to him for salvation and we hear him through the written word of God, which any properly taught and discerning Christian would never follow the "voice of a stranger". Haven't the reformers, historically cessationists, addressed hearing the Holy Spirit as "impressions"? Charles Spurgeon once in the middle of a sermon called out a young boy who stole for the first time; Spurgeon never knew the boy, but felt an impression of the Holy Spirit revealing truth about a situation. Or, in modern terminology, spoke.

Gift of Knowledge? I've witnessed the same thing regarding someone dabbling in the occult. A member of the church came forward and said he wanted to say something in the morning service but was not compelled to do so. In the evening service he couldn't sit in his seat idly, that the Holy Spirit prodded him to say something then. He came forward and said there was someone there who was getting involved in the occult and needed to repent. He mentioned he wanted to say something in the morning but wasn't led by the Spirit to do so at that time. A few minutes later, a young man came forward and said it was he that had transgressed. And the reason the first gentleman probably wasn't compelled earlier was because he, the transgressor, wasn't at that earlier service. Glory be to God!

Well I'm a bit worried here. Are you trying to say God does not speak at all. Obviously the scriptures that you have quoted have been misused and they should be called out for that however to say God doesn't speak to our Spirit is actually a bit dangerous. Also be careful thinking that there are no true believers who identify themselves as evangelical. We have a stereotyping issue in the body of Christ at the moment. I know of people who have been raised on Pentecostal church but do not subscribe to the doctrine that everyone has to speak in tounges. Anyway I believe God does speak to us, but the foundation has to be the Word of God. The primary way that God communicates is through His written Word and the challenge we have is people claiming to hear from God when they don't have a solid foundation of the Word or correct interpretation of the Word. So the best way to pick up of someone truly hears from God or not is measuring their knowledge of the true Word of God.

I do feel when people see certain a single flaw in a topic we just paint everyone with the same brush and dismiss the topic completely which is what's been done right now. Obviously the title of the book he is pushing raises questions to begin with as it suggests that God cannot speak to our Spirit. As a believer you need God to communicate to you what your purpose in his kingdom is and it's not necessarily anything that you will find explicitly highlighted in scripture. Yes I agree that there should never be new revelation beyond scripture from a doctrinal point of view, but on a personal level God does speak on what we ought to do.

This is a clear misrepresentation of Charles Stanley's position. He always talks about God speaking to us through people, places and situations with the Holy Spirit being involved. John 10 clearly identifies the sheep as those who will ultimately choose to believe in Jesus Christ. We get a clear distinction between Jews first and later the gentiles. If you do not hear the word of the Gospel then you are hardened and reject it, if you hear and receive you have repented and believed unto salvation. No where does this passage indicate Calvinist doctrine. The first part could clearly be Jesus speaking about the apostles, and the second him speaking generally about those who will believe through their word. In John 17 Jesus makes a very similar reference about the apostles first and that he lost none except Judas and then goes on to pray for those who would believe through them carrying the word to the world.

I am not a Calvinist and have some friends that call them heretics. I do not do so, and yet it seems you have no trouble saying that what I believe is heretical, nor teaching eternal security in the same post. As I wrote you last time, I HAVE heard God speaking to me, however, every time it either was Scripture or could be backed up by Scripture. Dr. Stanly isn't necessarily incorrect. If we know our Bibles we can "hear" the voice of our Shepherd. John 16:12-15 says, “I have yet many things to tell you, but you cannot bear them now. But when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own authority. But He will speak whatever He hears, and He will tell you things that are to come. He will glorify Me, for He will receive from Me and will declare it to you. All that the Father has is Mine. Therefore I said that He will take what is Mine and will declare it to you." But the Holy Spirit can't bring to our remembrance what we have not studied. There is, of course, a false movement, but to lump everyone in with such a broad stroke is irresponsible. I know God has spoke to me. I know He has given me dreams and visions (also supported by Scripture) And if I know these things by the study of His Word and the Holy Spirit bringing this Word to life for me, who are you then blaspheming, me, or the Holy Spirit?

And what about all the verses in the New Testament about the HOLY SPIRIT speaking to and guiding christians and apostles on what to say and do? How can any Christian say that GOD doesn’t speak to people? I know several Christians including myself who have had experiences with the HOLY SPIRIT that couldn’t be coincidence. What about the man who healed Paul’s blindness. Did the HOLY SPIRIT speak to him? Was he an apostle? But he doesn’t speak to anyone else except apostles? Why is the new reformation trying to change things the Bible clearly says? Now I have never heard an audible voice but i could also never deny that GOD has spoken to me or worked in my life outside of reading the Bible. If I did I would be lying. The HOLY SPIRIT has prompted me to do things and say things, put impressions and thoughts in my mind to speak to me as well as conviction. Show me where in the Bible it says that he doesn’t speak to people and when did he stop? Now I have never been told or told to do anything that contradicts the Bible. Some of these tv preachers are false like Joyce Myers. But I also don’t believe everything some of the new reformation teachers teach as well. Another thing to consider is that we can believe different things and still be brothers. I have different views than Jeff durbin about revelation. But are we both saved? Will those different views keep us from heaven? I would also be lying if I said that I knew and understood everything perfectly. I will spend a life time and eternity learning about GOD. My views have changed as my eyes have been opened and it didn’t happen all at once but over years reading and praying and having a relationship with GOD. That is the same with all Christians. We see that even the apostles made mistakes at times( thinking of Peter not eating with the gentiles and learning that he could not only reach out to the gentiles but that he could eat any food). But back to my original point I can find several places in the Bible where GOD spoke to people you can’t find a single place that says he doesn’t.

After a second listen, I did not recall a reference to faith, as Romans 14:23b testifies that 'whatever is not of faith is sin' and 'faith comes by hearing the word (rhema-speaking voice, not graphe, grapho, nor gramma all referring to scripture). God doesn't force us to hear His voice, He invites us by His grace to hear his voice.

I agree relatively with the interpretation of John 10 here. However, it is rather strange that these modern calvinists are in complete disagreement with the old reformers. The book promoted in this video would be rejected vehemently by the old reformers. Even by calvinists up to the early 1990s. Martin Lloyd Jones would have called this heresy. No wonder your average calvinist church today is dead as 3 o'clock in the morning. Btw the charismatics are terribly wrong as well. This is one spiritually dead group combating another spiritually dead group.

Good grief, these comments are atrocious! Like... I don't agree with Dr. Stanley's more charismatic position on this issue, but this is, at best, a tertiary doctrinal issue. Some of you are acting like he's denying the Gospel or some other major theological doctrine. And then, some of you are bringing up his marriage and his truly heretic son, which are completely irrelevant to this topic, as if he's responsible for his wife leaving him (he never remarried btw) or his son's bad theology (because we're gonna get judged for our children's/parents' individual sins, right?). This is part of the reason why the church is dying in Western society. There's about a billion more important problems the church is facing and we're focusing on this and not advancing the Gospel.

Maybe it’s time for you to consider the version of Christianity that relies on the event of the resurrection of Jesus as its foundation. The book does not claim that "God doesn't speak". It never states that. In stead, the book reminds us that the Holy Spirit communicates primarily though scripture. “when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13) and not through our own subjective, fallible nudges, thoughts or feelings. Pastor Justin Peters series on the book is really worth a view, go check it out. Books based on unbiblical doctrines that promote extra biblical experiences are far more deadly, and pulls people away from the truth as it is freely presented in the Bible.

I absolutely agree that that verse is used out of context. I have not, however, heard a compelling argument from either side that God does or does not speak to individuals today. Cessationists assume He doesn’t, and go looking for texts (usually out of context) to prove it. But saying it is not normative does not equal it never happens. On the other hand, proponents of works like Experiencing God can’t seem to get anything in context either, and seem to think that if it happened once, it should be normative. I wish I could find a balanced view...

Another gem, Alan! There is certainly a lack of solid teaching in the churches. There's very little taught in the way of systematic theology according to the literal-historical-grammatical hermeneutic; hence, there is a propensity to just grab at any verse and run with it. And, as you pointed out, chapter divisions can cause problems for some Christians. I ran into these problems when I was first saved and went to a Pentecostal church. I was often confused. lol. One of my greatest disappointments in my walk as a Christian is that I wasn’t introduced to hermeneutics earlier. I was encouraged to read the bible and for sure I obediently read it. But no one taught me... nor the regular church attendees at my then local church how to read it. It is not just about reading the Holy Scriptures as one would a newspaper. It is largely HOW you read it. I.e. hermeneutics is so important, more now than ever before. It is for everyone not merely pastors and church leaders. We all need to handle the Scriptures with the reverence, respect and care it deserves. If we all followed the strict principles of hermeneutics there would be far less erroneous doctrines being taught today.

Furthermore who spoke to Paul on the Road to Demascus or was that just a figurative story?? When you pray Is it just you talking to God and her Never answers you back by way of Holy Spirit. Jesus spoke to the father and he answered him all the time. Why can't we ? For those who don't believe God doesn't not speak to us as his children today has not fully understood the purpose of God and his fellowship with man. Jesus came to redeem what was lost. Our God is Holy. He's not the kooky character charasmatics would have you believe in, but he's also not the silent suit and tie book worm cessationists would propose either. God is supernatural and His sovereign power goes on forever. The sheep hear His voice by means of the receiving the Gospel by the power of the Spirit in regeneration; where we come to a place where we are no longer spiritually dead and we awaken to the truth of Christ and the things of the Spirit. It's not about speaking in tongues, but it's also not limited to doctrine and head knowledge. God isn't just in a book. He's spoken to us through His Holy Word, but he's constantly communing with us in various ways. We shouldn't be so dismissive of all things without testing them biblically. God doesn't fit in our boxes. Think Biblically; grow Spiritually.

This HVG series has been of great help. I grew up in what I call 'small' baptist churches (100 members at most). The phrase "listen to that still small voice" was something I was accustom to hearing. It lead me down the path of 'hearing God' and I can remember at least one time where such practice ended horribly. I don't think the Christianism of listening to the still small voice is completely rooted in false teaching. There are some who take the 'hearing from God' idea to places where it becomes harmful and dangerous. The pastors I've heard use this phrase do so in attempts to describe the Spirit. Equating the Spirit to 'that voice in your head that tells you, "you shouldn't have done that,"' some accidentally slipped into the HVG teaching. At least from my point of view, in the Bible Belt, false teaching begins more are erroneous teaching, rather than malicious false teaching.

However, here's the thing: suppose you're in a debate with an heretical Word Faith or Seventh Day adherent, and you completely forgot a biblical verse location that would shatter your opponent's main arguments, and you whisper a silent prayer to the Lord to jog your memory; and He graciously responds by doing so. Are you telling me that that is impossible in this day and age? Wouldn't that be God "whispering" to you?

Kevin, I hope Alan responds to your question. I have one for you as well: There are many Christians like me to whom God simply DOESN'T give direct revelation (i.e., new information apart from what's already in the Bible); what is your thought as to why God is not 'speaking' to us? Some other people's responses to that question have included: You're not a good/worthy enough Christian; God is speaking but you don't yet know how to listen; You aren't baptized by the Holy Spirit (under their doctrinal definition of what that is); You haven't yet spoken in tongues (Nope, I haven't, and I haven't been given that particular gift), etc. Before you reply, let me also note: I'm as bad/unworthy a Christian as anyone else! I'm an excellent listener, so unless there's some esoteric technique or spiritual 'channel' for tuning in God's 'voice' that the Bible never provides anyway, I haven't got a clue. (My guess would be that if/when God wishes to directly communicate with someone He knows EXACTLY how to get that person to 'hear' Him clearly and unambiguously on the very first try.) My understanding of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is this: "For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit." (1 Cor. 12:13) I'm a born-again child of God who has received the Lord Jesus as his Savior, so I'm part of the body of Christ. Does God somehow regenerate some people when they're saved WITHOUT the ministry and indwelling of the Holy Spirit? My understanding of the gift of tongues is this: "All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they?" (1 Cor. 12:30) By the way, like you I HAVE prayed during a critical moment for God to help me remember a verse reference or some other important piece of information, but when I recalled that information I ALREADY KNEW IT BEFOREHAND and it was dredged up from my memory and wasn't new information directly revealed to me on the spot. I'm more than willing to grant that God may have 'enhanced my recall' in such instances though.

@@ChipsAplentyBand Thanks for the response. Based on your reply concerning the gift of tongues, are you a Continuationist? You seem to be one. I am one. In fact, I am Reformed Charismatic, in the tradition of Wayne Grudem. I love the Reformers and consider the Reformation to be the single greatest revival in church history in the post-Apostolic era. I don't agree with the classic Pentecostal position that the baptism of the Holy Spirit is a subsequent work to salvation. Your quote of 1 Corinthians 12:13 is on point. And I agree that not everyone speaks in tongues. Why you don't hear from God? I can't answer that question for you. But I know He certainly speaks to me via His Holy Spirit. Here's a verse that I believe will help my argument....How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying. 1 Corinthians 14:26 KJV bible.com/bible/1/1co.14.26.KJV I see nothing in Scripture that says that Lord will be silent to His church after the canon of Scripture has closed. I had asked Alan another pertinent question regarding this topic. Let me see if you can answer it: suppose your two year old son is abducted by a pedophile right in front of your home, wouldn't you pray to the Lord for some kind of directive or information on where your child is and who the perpetrator is? Wouldn't you want the Lord to give some sort of response by graciously leading law enforcement officers immediately to the location of the pedophile? Them finding the perpetrator would be God's directing them in some way, which entails communicating -- something Polite Leader and Osman are adamant does not happen. I know about trusting in God. I believe in the sufficiency of Scripture. But where in the Bible I will find an answer regarding the location of my child, who is in grave danger? Again, I am convinced that Osman's book is an overreaction to the many abuses and false prophecies coming out of the NAR and Charismatic movements.

So much of what we see in contemporary churches is people wanting less and less of the written Word and more of a supernatural experience. Yes, we can be led by our convictions and emotions but Scripture should be the ultimate authority. I’ve heard people say that God told them to leave their spouses for other people and so on and so forth. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.”

Up until this video I have agreed with all of your content. I agree with your analysis of the scriptures used in this video. I would classify myself as a Calvinist. I study the masters mainly The Great John Bunyan and John Owen. I have all their works. I’m certainly don’t ascribe to any voice of God movement. But I have heard a voice that was not mine in my head. It was so powerful in its effect and yet calm, gentle and quiet. So distinct from my own thoughts that I Found it alarming almost. I can not say if it was the holy ghost or angel or the Son or the Father. But what I can say is that it was for my good. And all good things come from God. You can never take these in estimable mercies from me. What a privilege for me to hear a voice in my head that helped me in away when I could not help myself. I know exactly what he said each time and where I was standing. I’m 44 years of age and I will tell you sir. God will move heaven and earth for his Elect, for his true children. Be careful that you don’t just go along piggy backing off others just because we’re on the same team. No doubt the men you study are great men but they don’t know it all. To say God won’t or doesn’t do this anymore is… arrogant frankly. How easy to is to be so dismissive. I pray you are NEVER in the dire straits, that I was in, that you need to hear from God in away that was POWERFUL to right the ship. But I would so caution you not to be so unbelieving on this matter just because other members of the body are. I have a TESTIMONY 🙌✊ and his voice is part of it 💥! Keep up the good content! Sincerely James

I saw this video a few days ago and just finished Osmans book. I came through a long period of being in this stream of error. The faith I had then crumbled, leading me into sin. Decades later my faith is solid. I have been a cessationist for a while. I read the bible everyday. It is my food for life. I offer an event from my own life. In April, after brain surgery in March, I was in a hospital room with my wife when a doctor told me that my brain cancer was incurable. The doctor left the room and I told my wife we need to hear from the Lord. I regularly read through the Psalms but my Bible opened to Psalm 88. (Please read). It is perhaps one of the most hopeless of the Psalms, but still not without hope. I found it comforting to read this Psalm after receiving my death sentence. I wish that Jim’s book addressed situations like this. This is not the first time this has happened since I have agreed with the cessationist position. This is perhaps the second, but by far my circumstance was at least more grave. But stories like this have no comfortable place in what’s acceptable in a cessationist environment of belief. At least before cough-terror-home- jail, if I meet with some Christian men, talk about a passage in 1 Peter let’s say, review the latest hockey or baseball result, but then not talk about my Bible opening to a passage that spoke to my situation? How does that make sense? I would like to write Jim Osman but can’t find his contact and refuse to use Facebook.

Like father like son, Idk what Andy Stanley has to say about “hearing the voice of God” but I do know that just like his father, he’s got bad theology. Thanks for all your work Alan. In case anyone’s curious about Andy, he’s one of those who thinks we should “unhitch” the OT, as of now I don’t think he’s retracted that statement.

Lost a lot of respect for this channel sadly... Stanley is one of the best teachers of his time. If you think Jesus just calls us to salvation and then keeps silent you are beyond wrong. You are massively critical and need to realize that Charles has done more for the Gospel than most people alive today. Also, if you knew anything about Stanley you would know he teaches eternal security, and He teaches that the verse you mentioned is regarding salvation. Read your Bible friend, God always speaks to His People.

@@JerseyGurl4Life These so called watchdog ministries divide and tear down the body of Christ while thinking they are upholding truth. If they think that Christ really would make a KZbin channel calling out people he disagreed with they are truly deceived. cessationists like to quote 1 Corinthians 13:8 in regards to the gifts ceasing, but it is clearly an eschatological reference here because if knowledge has ceased we are all in trouble haha! “Love never fails. Facts: But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.” (John 16:13) - What Jesus said is true.

Videos such as these just have the effect of stirring up strife within the body of Christ. Christians should be focused on preaching the gospel to a lost world and recognizing the fact that no pastor is perfect and sometimes they make mistakes in their teaching. I do not think that Stanley's belief that one can hear the voice of God rises to the level of heresy. Perhaps Stanley will come to see in the future that he was mistaken. I know I myself have believed things in the past that by studying the Word of God I subsequently found to be mistaken.

history buff03; Galatians 1; Galatians 1; 6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. The vast majority of preachers in church buildings are preaching another gospel and another Jesus which does not save but deceives.

Sorry brother this is just false. It’s Gods spirit that reveals all things, and we see explicitly where god speaks to his people. We understand that the Holy Spirit is the one that speaks to us “the Shepard” as scripture states John 16:13 You’re making us sound a bit like Muslims who can’t hear from there God. Yahweh is alive we serve the God of the living not the dead
