I saw one teacher say he told his student that was NOT the way to learn guitar. He said the student totally gave up the instrument in a few months and had gotten virtually none of the song either learned correctly or memorized. Some people are their own worst enemies. I've also seen at least one YT vid spoofing that old saw. It was quite funny, as I remember. One salesman in the vid said something like "don't do that, seriously, I mean STOP that". The guy in the vid playing "that guy" kept trying to put all kinds of different spin on it when they'd shush him, IIRC. It was well done.
