What amazes me about Charles’s playing-other than everything else everyone in this comment section has already said-is that the bass-ness (if that’s a word) is not lost even though he’s covering guitar solos. There are people who can play the bass like they’re playing guitar…Sheehan comes to mind…but very few can play guitar parts on the bass while at the same time doing what a bass player should do-dominate the low end and provide the groove. Hats off to Charles. Wow.
@einarabelc5
@einarabelc5 3 жыл бұрын
Uh? That made absolutely no sense. Is a NOTE by note solo, it either grooves on the original or it doesn't. Again, absurd.

I agree. He's literally playing guitar solos on a bass. How much closer can you be being a bassist that plays like a guitarist than that?
@milkywayrocks
@milkywayrocks 3 жыл бұрын
I disagree. His choices of which notes to slap, for example, is bass-like even though he’s playing the same notes as the guitarists. The Petrucci and Polythia solos are great examples.
@LukeG_Eire

@@einarabelc5 application and technique can change tone. That's why when a guitarist just does the same thing on bass it hits the cliche 'he's playing guitar on bass' look at Matt Heafy's recent bass video to understand. Charles still has the application and tone of the bass player when playing other instrument solos. Which is a skill in itself. And it shows Charle's broke multiple ceilings of virtuosity. I hope you understand
@mortisnoctu

Charles has turned into a complete beast on bass. He’s got to be in the running for the most well rounded and best overall bass players worldwide. Seriously. He’s on another level than most of the top players, and he’s playing their most difficult lines with ease. Insane!!!
@hazardeur

now relax a little bit. he's very good but "with ease". he's a) rehearsing this difficult stuff for days, maybe weeks for the more difficult cases, b) he's behind the safety of his videos most of the time and can cut his video together the way he pleases c) being a youtube player, he can take as many takes as he wants until it looks and sounds flawless. now i'm not saying he's not great. he definitely is insanely good. but i can assure you it's not as easy as it looks for him. he will admit that himself i'm sure. also how can you diss the greats like that? first of all, they had to come up with this stuff in the first place and they play it live in front of an audience night for night, no video safety nets available there. it's a whole different animal.

I am always blown away by your ability to pick up and mirror difficult pieces. If it was really four days, that's just incredible. The Canon in D was my favorite, though. Classical pieces with modern bass tap/ slap is always beautiful to hear. But, I did just get through listening to the 20 video game songs, and I'd like to hear a bona-fide full production of Skyrim with your usual Berthoudian twists.

Charles, Charles, Charles. Was mightily impressed with all of the solos until you got to Guthrie........then my head just exploded! Un- be- leive- able! I'm standing in front of my computer giving you an ovation Sir. By the way, do you know of any movies currently in production that need a headless torso? I'm not much good for anything else now.

I've been a big Dream Theater fan for the past 15 years or so, and for the longest while I thought John Myung (in his glory days) was about as good as was possible to be on bass. You have definitely proven that thought wrong!

Im gonna go old school. Al Di Meola Race With the Devil on Spanish Highway. He was 23 when he recorded it after having been in Return to Forever with Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke starting at the age of 19. There's a few pieces in the beginning but go to about 4:50.
