PLEASE MAKE MORE OF THESE As a teen who's been playing classical for 10 years, I learned the theory but not how to apply it. I'm trying to make the switch to jazz (it just seems so much more fun), and, during quarantine, videos online have been my only source of guidance. Thank you so much!
@MudStuffin4 жыл бұрын
If you've been playing for 10 years then I assume you have at least moderate reading and technical skills. So now what I encourage you to do to help you improve with jazz (mainly improv) is to transcribe pieces that you like (listen, learn how to play, then write them down) and transcribe the chords as well. Once you do that, you can find all the II-V-Is and take the licks from those parts and incorporate those into your own improv.... Wow, that was a lot... Good luck!

@@CharlesCornellStudios Charles, keep doing what you are doing! In addition to being super smart/talented/fucking hilarious/a great teacher (you really are invitingly concise and simple without loss of accuracy with your theoretical explanations), I really do think you have the best attitude, the most integrity, and the most genuine humility of any KZbinr I've ever seen (and I watch a shit ton of KZbin)! I'm not really expecting an answer to this but if someone passing by knows the answer that'd be great! So I generally get the purpose of the 2-5-1 but one thing I'm struggling to understand is how to use it to change Keys, if I want to go from C Major to E Major for example, do I just do the 2-5-1 but instead of resolving back to C i instead resolve to E? Or do I use the 2 5 of the E major scale when i want to change Keys? I find this part kind of confusing and any help would be greatly appreciated!!
@GospelProgressionsUniversity3 жыл бұрын
That’s a great question. When you use a 2,5,1 chord progression it’s to _progress_ to another key. To answer your question yes you _can_ use the 2,5,1 of E major to _progress_ to an E major. Generally, the point of chord progressions in jazz is to resolve a 5 chord to some type of 1 chord.

The prof made us play ii-V-I’s all the way around the circle of fifths (counterclockwise in the fourths direction) on the piano no matter what your instrument was. That’s how important it was to him that we grasp this.

Love that bit of insight about putting 5 in front of key change. Brilliant!
I will quote you "The world can never hurt from having more jazz.-- Charles Cornell", thank you, that is sooo true.

Thank you so much for this. I’m a classically trained tuba player, and my college schedule didn’t allow for jazz theory electives (technique and educator courses took those spots). This certainly put things in the right perspective for many different levels. Awesome! I find that jazz guys really love tritones, and my limited extended harmony understanding has me scratching my head as to why this works and it’s functionality.

I honestly would love if he could explain the absolute basics. Because I just feel so calm when he talks about it. I can understand even if I don’t know everything.

I really love these theory videos cause, even though I’ve been playing an instrument for several years, I’ve never had real theory lessons so my knowledge is super spotty and weird. More functional knowledge than theoretical

Steve, you nailed an important point. Me: Adam Neely in 2020. This channel in early 2021. 12tone last week. My KZbin meanderings got me there, but my route was different.

DUUUUUDDDEE I've been struggling to gain an intuitive understanding of the ii V I for YEARS and you made it SO EASY.The phrases "leading tone" and "common tone" swam to me from long-forgotten band memories and you BLEW MY MIND when you did whole "v in front of every new key" trick. I have a whole new understanding of the keyboard now. THANK YOU SO MUCH, you are AWESOME and I'm BUYING A SHIRT. I would love to see further videos, perhaps deconstructing how keys can change within a song? BLESS YOU HAVE A NICE DAY
