Thanks for highlighting these mistakes. As for the blogging I understand the benefits that comes with it but it can be overwhelming thinking about how you want to write about what you are doing right now. I just want to work on myself and write in short posts using mediums such as LinkedIn or Medium pending when I think I am ready to step it up to a blog. What are your thoughts about one aspiring to a cybersecurity awareness analyst role while also thinking of the SOC level 1 pathway. I recently saw a job ad for the awareness analyst role and I felt I am not fit for it because I havenot prepared a risk report or awareness training for a company before. How do you suggest one can practice those things

Great value with these recommendations by Gerry. Two years later it still rings true. And I absolutely agree, pouring money (which I don't have!) should not be the way to go. Great advice, especially - 12:32, just recently I felt comfortable and added cybersecurity on my LinkedIn profile. And I am even labeling as 'transitioning' which I didn't like that much but so far that's what I feel like.

@@utsavdhungana2240 hey my guy! So for me it was worth it, I was coming from a marketing background and wanted to jump into cyber. I studied at the University of North Dakota where it was completely online and people from all around the US were in my class. A mass majority from tech backgrounds, but with some determination and love for tech I did just fine. I actually just picked up a position with Lumen Technologies as a solutions engineer. Basically helping enterprise companies such as Microsoft, the NFL, NHL and many more to mom and pop shops find the best way to solve their technical needs and help them reach their goals. Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Excellent tips. On #2 - "starting at the finish line" I've done this (reviewed JD's of jobs I want) but have noticed things can be all over the map. Since I'm looking for entry-level roles sometimes I've noticed the expectations of different companies for the same roles (Example: Jr. SOC analyst) can be wildly different. This leads to so much confusion, and I think it's one reason people in my position look to expensive boot camps or "break-in" services for help. I appreciate people like yourself who are trying to clear the fog.

It can, and dont be baked into it either. You should evaluate what your doing at least every 6 months (id advise quarterly), to make sure your goals, plans, etc are still what you want. adjust as needed. (Its Agile method for your own career)

Your information on the five mistakes people make when trying to get into cyber security is helpful but is there information that puts one on the proper path toward understanding the material as an example I'm a retired transportation logistics individual, however I found the time to take CompTIA a+ as well as an intro into cyber security but I soon realize there's more than meets the eye to this there's terms and definitions and principles that need to be understood I feel like I've learned something in a small way but not enough in a strong way to propel me into the field of cyber security is there a particular roadmap that you could advise me of step by step to take?

What? You actually wanted the five things tl:dr? YW! 1:04 Mistake 1- No professional networking 4:20 Mistake 2- Not starting at the finish line (go find a job with reqs and then fill in the reqs systematically) 7:28 Mistake 3- Not staying up on current threats (go listen to the Cyber Security Headlines podcast, yes I listened to the whole video) 10:02 Mistake 4- Don't spend money that doesn't delivery value (trust but verify baby!, ask people that have take the course) 12:13 Mistake 5- Not positioning yourself as a cyber-professional - LinkedIn- clean it up, put aspiring cyber-security professional, tailor the site to cyber, get a website to show your work. Hack-the-box, homelab, etc.

@@endlessmindset8808 Sure what do I know....I just do Cyber Security for the government. *eye roll* If you can find someone that will hire you straight up by all means do it and network....otherwise think of all the other people that are applying for the same job as you with the same Security+ cert...which is a joke exam by the way...hard to get experience if you think certain jobs or internships are below you....you should probably watch the video again...good luck

So like a blog on a self hosted website, or is there a good place in particular to host a blog? I’m halfway through the Google Cybersecurity Analyst course right now.

Hi Gerald, I just discovered your content today, and I'm very appreciative of your perspective and information! I recently got started on some Microsoft certs centered around cybersecurity and using Azure and Defender for enterprises. They're pretty budget friendly which is great in my case. What do you think about Microsoft certs?

I am transitioning from management in UPS to getting into cybersecurity and I love these talking points and tips. I am currently enrolled in the Google Cybersecurity Certificate program and will be taking the security+ exam afterwards. If you have any more tips or ideas for me I would to hear them.

I loved it personally. I had zero cybersecurity experience before taking it and they explain everything so in depth. I have not secured a job in the field yet but I think if you get your security plus and the google certificate you have a better chance of landing something.@@dihett

Great incite Gerald. What is the alternative? I have more than 500 LinkedIn connection and three cyber sec. certs but I'm planning to leave looking for jabs and my certs are expiring soon. I have when they say that " We have 350,000 cyber sec. professionals shortage in the USA" What the irony?

If they do expire you can keep on your resume and put (expired) next to it.

Thank you for the advice. Going through school now to get my bachelors in cyber security with little to no background in IT. Currently going through a course on coursera called IT Support Professional to kind of get me up to date on some fundamentals for IT and cyber security. Any other advice from anyone brand new to the IT life?
