I’m a physical therapist assistant transitioning over to healthcare IT. I’m getting my experience by volunteering every single weekend for the next 4-5 years and any time off at the hospital I work. It’s part of my 5 year plan. I’m an orthopedic and cardiac inpatient Physical Therapist Assistant in a hospital setting moving on after 25 years. I’m finishing my BS in health science. At the same collage I’m working towards my cyber security certificate, COMP TIA, Microsoft Windows/ office certification and then getting my HCISPP certification. I’m also learning to use EPIC since the hospital I work at has it. The IT department is waiting for me lol. It’s a beautiful transition for me. I’ll stick with healthcare IT. I will say this. What I’ve learned so far. You must have a plan. I have a 5 year plan, and sticking to the plan is a must.

youre the only youtube channel thats actually helpful, all the others says the same thing, very vague "networking" with people, how to do this and that without being specific. You give links directly to what people need, so thank you. Also, i would like to point out to anyone reading this. Certificates are for people who are already educated, they have bachelors or masters even and they are looking to change careers. youll notice every single one of them feel good stories say i have bachelors in X before i got into cybersecurity, then they say i have no experience in IT and all that good stuff making it seem like anyone can do it. its not for people with no education and ONLY a certificate. interning and bootcamps require at minimum an associates degree, to be currently enrolled etc. on top of that, if you are older, do you want to intern with a bunch of 20 somethings when youre in your 30s or 40s. It not realistic so headsup

Problem is you can't even get the interview without "professional" experience. These are great but not what employers are looking for. They want the certs and for someone else to take the chance on hiring you first. You can learn Cyber Security online pretty easily but it's not going to get you a job, I've been trying for over 2 years with THM all over my resume but still can't get employers to even look at me. I finally gave up a month ago and made my resume more general for other IT jobs as layoffs happened and I was without a job. THM is still on my resume but it's not the main focus anymore.

Do you have certs?
@crysiscontained44218 ай бұрын
@@Yo-qp6hq Nope, those bitches are expensive. I can barely afford rent. The exam for the CEH is 1200 and that's just not worth it for the "chance" to get an interview to me. That's 1200 I could spend on my own personal happiness and that's far more important to me than some job that's going to make me hate it in 6 months

I'm a recent college grad, and this video is amazing for me. Thank you for the heads up on all this info. It's very hard to break into the industry without job experience...
@Agroth2333 Жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct. And the fact that they want 3-5 years of Experiance for an entry level job when you are fresh out of college is too much. I feel like that might be something I'll have to see if Gerry Would be interested in doing.

@@SimplyCyber I am on that current path. I have 20+ years in IT as help desk and other support roles. Starting this year i made the choice to pull the trigger on moving towards Cyber Security. Its overwhelming all the sites and certs and classes. Having a roadmap like this one is a huge help. Given that your recomendations are inline with the steps I am already taking that makes my mind and wallet feel a bit better. LOL

Thank you very much for this video. It's been very helpful to me. I've recently obtained the Google Cybersecurity Certification from Google on Coursera as well as my CompTIA Sec+. I've been applying for entry level jobs non-stop but not much response yet. With all the information provided in this video, where would you or anyone reading this recommend I go next? Should I start studying for Net+? Should I focus on learning the in's and out's of Linux or Python? Should I start doing a different cert? Home Labs? I feel overwhelmed and I'm having trouble in a set path. Thank you in advance.

Hi Gerry, thank you for all your CS content. I listen to your podcast and really enjoy your talks. There is so much information out there that it gets overwhelming. I want to be in the DFIR area under CS, where could I get the experience for that (i.e. platforms, tools, reading material or hands on experience, etc.)? Thanks!

Also, there is an issue atm where companies say they are hiring when they aren't. Because The loans they got during covid are required to be paid back once the company is no longer in a hiring state.

Hi Gerald, I'm transitioning into cybersecurity with absolutely NO cybersecurity experience. However, I have 20 years of IT networking experience. I also have 8 years of Cisco network Engineer experience with Cisco CCNA/CCNP route/switch and CCNA/CCNP voice certifications. In addition to these, I'm A+, Network+, and Microsoft Server certified (MCP).I'm currently studying for the Security+. I also purchased your GRC Master Class program. My question is, are there any Entry level opportunities where I can use my GRC training experience? I'm also looking for remote work because of my disability.

Yes. You’ve got a big adv w the IT bg. For grc look for “risk analyst” or “grc auditor “ “fisma auditor”

Just for the Raspberry Pi recommended prices start at $129 - some things have changed since you set up your lab.
@Agroth2333 Жыл бұрын
I've found some success finding an old chrome book that people are getting rid of. Sometimes you can snag one for like $50 and then install whatever you want on there... Mine has kali on it, and I try to run a lab on it at least once a month.
@greatwhiteswag Жыл бұрын
@@Agroth2333 Great tip for sure, thank you. I've really wanted to try out the Rasp Pi for quite a while but the overall project price just hasn't been enticing for quite some time now. The majority of Chrome books out there should have the juice to run mostly anything I can think of for labs except for a couple of manageable exceptions.

Question, I saw another video suggesting taking free courses with Qualys. What is your opinion on that @SimplyCyber?
@SimplyCyber Жыл бұрын
Qualys would be good to learn. It’s one of three main scanners out there and most scanners function the same, so learn one and you understand the gist of them
