Charley Steiner is a genuinely great person. A friend of mine in college was part of the campus radio station, and among other things called some games for the school. He somehow got hold of Charley’s contact information and sent him a message asking if he had any advice for a young broadcaster. I was there when Charley called him directly and talked to him for over a half hour, giving him tips and advice and just generally being awesome. He didn’t have to do that, and I’m sure it’s not the only time. Needless to say, we are all Charley Steiner fans for life.

I was there that night. As a season ticket holder my seats were center court next to the tunnel. When Carl Lewis hurried off I looked at him to make eye contact but all I could see was a glassy stare looking straight ahead and a face drained of color. His face was an ashen color. I felt terrible for him. It was painful.

Honestly the Star Spangled Banner is pretty damn difficult to just jump into if you don’t have a musical background. Especially a cappella. We assume we “know” it because we’ve heard it so many times, but to really sing it is tough. Props to Carl for trying, even if the result was hilarious
