Funny you mention that. Relating to this, this movie version of Dahl's story is often considered to be much darker when compared with the 1971 version. When in reality, unlike the 1971 version, this movie actually shows the brats still alive after the punishments, horrific physical deformities aside. The 1971 version just leaves it up to the audience to decide.
