I’ve always loved this clip. Chaplin was not in the best of health here. It’s as if his art and his direct involvement, conducting the small section of his beautiful score, rejuvenates him. He comes in a little confused and uncertain and by the end he’s lost ten years. He starts quipping with the orchestra! It’s the greatest ad for art therapy. Just so beautiful to see.

How lovely to see every possible footage of Charlie. How heartbreaking to see him live to see the beauty of the music he so insisted for and gave his life to despite the objections. I shutter in response, realising how I too can fight to actualise my inner voice despite all discouragement. Oh Charlie, forever a triumph of honesty and trust in oneself ❤️

Such a loss that Mr. Chaplin couldn't record his musical scores in America. After all, all but two of his films were made in America. Although, there is a side of America, which is on full display today, that makes me glad his children were raised and educated in Europe. Still, such a huge loss for America.

I think you're a little confused. Every film he made until A King in New York were done in America. All his scores, again until A King in New York, were done in California. Alfred Newman conducted Chaplin's first two scores (Newman wasn't under contract to 20th Century Fox yet). As mentioned, his first film (and its score) he did in England was A King in New York. All the silent films that he re-edited, while made in America, were scored in England.

He only conducted two musical pieces in his life I believe, maybe three, but he was always doing it by ear. I think his bravest musical direction moment was when he actually conducted two pieces of his music at a concert given by John Philip Sousa. This was long before film scores were even a thing.
