I read about Charlie Chaplin's life and was moved to tears. No wonder that someone who faced extreme poverty in their life could portray emotions of all poor downtrodden people so well. Charlie Chaplin will be a legend for generations to come. ❤️❤️

@ivanclaysburgh Жыл бұрын
What's even more heartbreaking is how close this scene is to Chaplin's real life. He was separated from his mother and placed in an orphan asylum at the age of 6. What you see in Chaplin's face is the anguish and pain he felt as he watched himself being dragged away from his own family. No child should ever have to endure that, and that's what Chaplin is rectifying in this scene.

agreed. In any era of film, that is amazing acting. But when you consider what film was during that time, how it all worked, and a child that age in such a time to have such presence on the screen is astonishing. When he's in the truck reaching and crying - I've never seen a more convincing and moving performance by a child actor that age. Never. I don't know the history of the making of this film, but I wonder how Chaplin pulled such a powerful delivery from a kid. Was it just natural talent or how was he coached. I hope they didn't do anything to upset the child for real. And yes, that could and would happen back then. No laws about things like that back then.

DAN1974 Before this was filmed. Chaplin and his wife had just lost a baby. He was two days old. I’d give him a lot of latitude for this one brief scene where he kisses the kid. It’s pretty self-explanatory. Off-camera for the rest of their lives, Chaplin and Coogan (the kid) were lifelong friends. And Charlie would helped him financially, when Coogan’s parents had stolen the money he earned as a child actor. I can see why you’re judging him by today’s standards. I hope that helps.

Recently saw the Showtime documentary, and I discovered this was probably a scene taken from Charlie's real life-- except he had no funny, fearless dad to save him, and he was taken away to a workhouse. Even the layout of this set resembles the room he lived in with his mother till he was taken away. Amazing to be able to go back to such a traumatic scene and be able to fix it after all those years, but his personal pain made the world a better place.
