Well, my heart is broken.. but i am so thankful to have had his influence over my life all these decades. I want to say what a wonderful family you all are. i can't tell you how heartwarming and inviting both the facebook page and the website have been for all of us. How he shared his family and touching times with us, and his wonderful sense of humor.. his poetic vision, his hopes and dreams.. he dove into the world heart first .. with such courage and vigor -- and that reckless free spirit of his. But the thing is, he loved people so much that we were able to be a part of his journey..he shared his adventures with us in a way nobody else ever has -- from a panoramic view common folks would otherwise never have had a glimpse of. I've had front row seats to this amazing Merle World all these decades. I can't help but feel him even closer now in some ways.. being part of his incredible life makes it possible myself, to live fully in every meaningful moment he would have captured and made masterpiece of..

+Ato Cox Hey, who can blame you for not listening to country nowadays, hell, it's nothing like country should be, or what it was just a few years ago. When you hear something great like Merle, Buck, Faron, Johnny, or Marty, you ask yourself, "What the hell has happened to my kind of music?" Sadly, it'll never be as good, (hell, as tolerable) as it used to be. I think the only two left are Loretta Lynn, and Charlie Pride. My head is hanging low, I will miss them all.

Charlie, Most respectfully, there are similarities in Merle and Buck that typify the Bakersfield sound. It's the Telecaster and flat pick with fingerstyle, along with sparse on stage combo type arrangements. I give Don Rich and Roy Nichols as much credit as anybody for that.

Charlie Daniels speaks very well about the legacy of Merle Haggard. In my view, Haggard is the best in country music for his combination of powerful, soulful voice, songwriting and styling of the music he performed. His canon--songs he wrote, co-wrote or brought to life when given a composition from someone else--exceeds anyone else's, though I'm sure there will be arguments in favor of a few other CW artists. He is the king of country and probably always will be.

Dearest Sir, I surely hope you are able to see this. I love the great sentiment you gave and I know full well and imagine you do too, this would be highly favored by Merle, wrote from the dust of the earth, left on a Workin' Mans' truck.... from dust to dust. I wish I was in your working route that day, came up behind you and gave Merle a few honks as in saying, 'God rest your beautiful soul, Merle'. I am going to share this here. My late husband, years before we met had a cluster of something that I will forever be envious of. You see he had many impromptu free concerts by Merle and friends. They both shared a common love, fishing! Can you imagine being on your boat, in a place of beauty, the lake, the tree-lined shore and taking in the star-lit night... then to hear the sounds coming from Merle's guitar, with his voice starting up in a song, from his boat? All of the singers and musicians on Merle's boat was part of a great night, in one giant Merle-Fest Jam Session! Many, many nights, my husband was privileged of these sessions that he was blessed to hear, as Merle sung across the waters of Lake Shasta. Thank you Merle, you came up through hard times, changed your path becoming the man you were and gave us yourself in your songs. What a legacy!

What pure expression of natures best treasures he unearthed... i'm just driftwood.. driftin like the winds that blow across the sky. i won't always be here with you.. i'm just driftwood driftin by. He saw amber waves of grain.. he danced the American waltz.. while "a horse made of iron that could outrun the wind rolled into the next century/ the tracks turned to roads -- the crude oil flowed through the veins of the great model T ". He was our Steinbeck.. The Bakersfield sound is real. They pretty much made electric country music famous and those electric guitar and steel pedal licks are all very similar. Listen to Wynn Stewart, Tommy Collins, Buck Owens and the buckaroos, Merle haggard and the strangers, Wanda Jackson and Fuzzy Owens they all have that similar live electric sound where Nashville was still acoustic and folkish.

I rewrote his Okie From Muskogee a few days ago. Don't really know, why, I don't write songs. But a couple of lines came to me in my head. This is no disrespect to Merle, it has nothing to do with him...just something that came out. Remember that. We don't eat spaghetti with machetes We don't ever vote in Tennessee We don't teach our kids to join no rumble We start kicking' ass right off the tee. We can't hold our liquor or our women We can't seem to make you see our way We're just made of steam and smoke and fireflies We are just the dust of bygone days. And I'm proud to be the token barroom brawler Better than a wooden Indian Walkin' tall while passed out on the floorboards Mumblin' trash and goin' down again. Dreamin' big can't get you that Ferrari Poppin' pills ain't only for the rich Tellin' lies will get you close to nowhere And probly' get your ass shoved in a ditch. And it's loud bein' stuck here on the highway My wrinkled thumb is now the flag I wave Beggin' rides and gettin' awful sunburned Patches stopped the nickels that I saved. She had said , please don't ever leave me I heard her say leave don't stick around I thought her love would have been forever But forever's just a ship that's run aground. Hitchin' miles never got me closer The only nails I trimmed were in my boots Got my ticket stamped for Camargito Leavin' here's my only way to lose. And I'm proud to be the only bum in Reno Tourists take my picture for a song I'd smile but I'd scare the little children Last night all my numbers came up wrong. The smell of grease has never really left me Her perfume found another man instead Schemin' didn't get me no diploma, The only thing I pumped was full of lead. Cowboy songs don't suit up for the young ones Only for the dead and hard to hear Don't waste your time on spurs and dreams and dance halls This singer's life is best viewed from the rear.
