With his feature directorial debut FOOL'S PARADISE premiering in theaters this weekend, the writer- director-actor visited Criterion for a trip inside our films closet, where he shares the connection between IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA and François Truffaut, the inspiration of Hal Ashby's BEING THERE, the importance of Spike Lee's DO THE RIGHT THING, and his excitement to explore the work Agnès Varda.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, when it’s firing on all cylinders, is just comedy perfection to me. No TV comedy cast has their level of chemistry and comedic timing together. From listening to the Always Sunny Podcast, I could tell that Charlie was a film buff to some degree. Awesome to see him in the hallowed Criterion closet.

Charlie Day was an IFC promo announcer before Sunny began. I used to use an mp3 of him narrating an IFC promo for Do the Right Thing as an intro to music from Do the Right Thing for the internet radio station I used to run, so I cheered when he grabbed the Do the Right Thing Blu-ray because of that old IFC promo. His IFC promos were a far cry from "Is your cat making too much noise all the time?"

My heart skipped a beat when he picked up Punch Drunk Love. What a phenomenal film. I absolutely love how incredibly off the rails it starts to get in the back half, because that's love, right? When you're really in the thick of it, you'll do insane things, and it feels as though the world itself bends to meet you in your insane pursuits. It also set up PTA's absolute best film, still to this day "There Will Be Blood".

So many incredible titles. We could all spend hours naming & talking about "the best films" in the Criterion collection, I'll just briefly mention CURE by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, one of the most powerful and unique horror-thrillers which was previously harder to find until Criterion released it. I also kind of appreciate Charlie honestly mentioning that he hadn't seen Barry Lyndon until recently. I also watched Barry Lyndon for the first time recently on my CC bluray, and as certain films can seem intimidating or daunting to some viewers it's refreshing and can be important to admit to not having seen certain films yet. Looking forward to Fools Paradise and new season of Sunny. Much love and respect to Mr. Charlie Day

@@jekw23 There are videos that explain the techniques and points about the story, but ultimately it's not really didactic. So many films now hit you over the head telling you how to feel about them but Tokyo story is remarkably not judgemental, people are flawed and hurt those they love and plans often don't work out how they want and that's life and there's nothing you can do about that.... not a very now message.
@jekw23
@jekw23 11 ай бұрын
@@cliffarroyo9554 thanks. I’ve watched a few videos on it. Seems most people have a personal or emotional connection with it. I think I need to watch it with no preconceptions rather than watching it with a “this is the best film ever” frame of mind. Suspect I’ll get more from it if I don’t pre judge the movie.
@NAmania
@NAmania 4 ай бұрын
@@jekw23 Just let yourself flow with it. Set aside it's universal acclaim/accolades etc. Feel the inevitability of your death. Be grateful for the time you get to spend with your loved ones on your way towards that inevitability. Accept your and their flaws for you share the same destiny. Finally be at one with the flow of time itself and float gently (if a bit solemnly) on it's waters , like a small fishing boat drifts quietly down the river. Show understanding.
