This was never about heaven or hell. Look at Emily's song " the rules are shades of grey, when you don't do as you say". It's about class struggle, the poor versus the rich. The rich keep telling the poor: you want more money, get more qualifications, get a better job, negotiate with your manager, etc. But while the poor are struggling non stop to do all that, to "meet the rules", the rich are hitting us all with inflation non stop, essentially voiding all salary raises we manage to negotiate or the studying like crazy to get better jobs. That's why the rules are shades of grey. They only exist to benefit the rich and they keep pulling the rug from under us. It's like a lion who is jumping through a flaming circle in the circus, and the circle keeps getting smaller and smaller. The ones who just finish university are lucky because they are more in demand, because the qualifications are recent, but you have a ton of debt and small salary. Then, as you progress, inflation hits you more and more, and no matter how much you negotiate with your manager or how much other jobs you look for, you can never beat it. That's why "make the wretched suffer just to kill them again". Even this artist couldn't say it's about class struggle cause class struggle is a taboo topic on social media. As soon as someone posts about it, it gets banned. By the rich people who control it.

Well they truly don't know. Sera has been around since the inception of Heaven and Earth. At the beginning it was only Heaven and Earth and literally every soul on Earth was supposed to go to Heaven, but when Lucifer gave the Apple of Knowledge to mankind, that is what created Hell. Since then, they have absolutely no idea what causes somebody to go to heaven or hell. So that is also why Sera shuts this down as no evidence to show a soul can be redeemed because to their knowledge, if he was redeemed, he would automatically respawn in heaven, and since he is still in hell, as far as they know, there is no redemption. Sera literally straight up says, we know when a soul arrives. That's it. That's all they know about if a soul deserves heaven or hell, just where they go at the time of their death. No justification for it.

Emily is definitely Charlie's parallel. They're sheltered, naive, in high places, with strong sense of morals and belief in virtues, both open and willing to extend a hand to others, and tbh their respective naiveté likely comes from the adults who love them sheltering them and thinking they aren't strong enough to be burdened in unintentional condescension. Tho Emily is more sheltered than Charlie just on account of never having known of the extermination while Charlie has to live with that knowledge. Lucifer has given up (after being crushed by Heaven), Sera has resigned and hardened her heart entirely--Emily and Charlie are definitely gonna be an important bond made going forward

It'd be a smart narrative move if Emily becomes an ally of the Hotel and its residents in the second season -- she already thought Charlie had a valid idea, and with the newly-arrived undeniable proof of the concept, she's got a good reason to want to help protect her friend's good work from what's coming. (No _way_ the battle's outcome goes unanswered.) Bringing Charlie up again might be difficult, considering the change in leadership of the Extermination forces, but the Embassy at the center of the city might still be an option for communication if it isn't actively monitored. We'll have to wait and see, but with the paradigm shift that just happened, keeping in contact is going to be more important than ever... and besides, now we've got _three_ characters up there who might want to send a message back down.

@@disrespecc9678Eh, it was religion's at one point. Main reason it stopped at least for Christianity is it disrupted the current power structure. The church used to fund research for astronomy, most notably Galileo before he started questioning the pope and got executed for it. The science didn't agree with the faith at the time, so the church couldn't use the christianity as a means for more power, thus the later condemnation of science. Faith healing becomes a lot less profitable when germ theory exists. Paying money to the church for "forgiveness" ain't justifiable if the empirical data suggests that you can't buy your way unto heaven. Hell, that's why Jesus, the core of christianity, was killed. The Sanhedron leaders got mad that Jesus was diminishing their power by practicing what he preached and proving even the dregs/gentiles of society can improve and redeem themselves. The "insane" notion that the Sanhedron leadership were still servants of God and not the other way around. Hell, they basically condemned and disowned Nicodemus, a high ranking religious and political official who taught most of the leadership about the Torah because listened to Jesus and agreed with him, accepting he was a servant of God and accepting he was mortal, a failable human. Kinda similar to how the song is, the servant's of God instead believing themselves to be "perfect", ironically committing blasphemy in doing so, judging and subjugating all they saw as inferior in spite of many high ranking officials within the organization considering these inhumane actions as deplorable and actively fighting against it. In order to preserve their power, their status quo, they kill their savior and exile all those who followed him, including themselves. Science was encouraged by at least Christianity until it conflicted with a select few human hypocrite's power.

And if Charlie does get another hearing for another sinner (like she did for Angel), Sir Pentious will (unless the angels decide to Suppress The Evidence™) come to thank her. At which point she and her escort will know, at the very least. (You're arguing about appearances -- what it looks like to others in the Hell that Charlie is in. While this is a valid point as far as "it can be used by the writers as a point to create drama" goes, I'm commenting on the meta, the rules that govern what we as viewers have seen. The drama that the writers can create depends on and is heightened by us viewers understanding these rules, because we know what the stakes in that storyverse actually are -- which is a bit of meta on the art of storycrafting. We wouldn't be discussing it if we didn't care about it on some level, which is what writers care about. Also... you say Charlie is and always be a failure. If she is, then in same way and for the same reasons, so is every priest and minister who preaches about Heaven. Do we, in our world, have proof that sinners can be redeemed? Since testamentary evidence is hearsay, we can't rely on the Bible for such evidence. Ultimately, this leaves Charlie in the same situation: she must convince others, through her words and songs, to simply have faith, the same way a minister must.)

What I like most about this episode is that Charlie named Angel Dust as an example, instead of Sir Pentious. It showed that she deeply believes Angel Dust is her best example of a redeeming being.

@@ladyofrillwater Admittedly they accused Angel of not trying to improve himself and not caring about the program before they found out about his contract with Valentino and the abuse he faces because of it. I personally think that's why Charlie used him as an example instead of Sir Pentious. Pentious seemed to willingly do his evil actions, and chose by his own free will to change and make amends. Due to his situation, Angel doesn't have that option, since a lot of his sins and vices are because of, or used as a mental escape from, his abuse by Valentino, but he still makes massive strides to improve himself despite that.

I love the symbolism as Emily hears Sera tell her “I wanted to save you the anguish it takes to ~do what was required~” while looking into Sera’s eyes seeing nothing but hellfire and malice in the one who’s supposed to be the best of them, and in charge.
@minersheep82858 ай бұрын
I think the reason her eyes are on fire is because of her undying worship for God's kingdom. As a Seraphim, she will do anything to protect it. Her eyes burn because she views the extermination of human souls as a good thing if it protects God's kingdom.

@@minersheep8285there is no fire in her eyes, that's the fire of Hell reflecting on her... And that lets quite no space of interpretation : it shows the twisted and corrupted view she has. Not a burning love or intent. Not an undying flame of worship. Those are hellish flames.

@minersheep8285 Relax y'all, I think they're talking about the old literal definition of a Seraphim, which is 'the burning ones' or 'angels of fire'. The idea is that they're constantly ablaze with holy love and spread it to others, which is metaphorically what Emily does. While the fire in this scene is definitely a reflection, I think taking it as a metaphor works. Sera would rather burn Hell to the ground than let anyone climb the ladder.
@blade7y1568 ай бұрын
@@jamespage4809 and that's not the meaning of the scene in my opinion. The phrase "do as required" the look on her face, all point toward an inner corruption masked behind a smile. At 2:40 Charlie and Emily don't actually jump up together. As Emily is grappling with the personal betrayal, after hearing Charlie chime in "that's what the $%*(& I've been saying," there's a very slight pause and then Emily grabs Charlie's hand and pulls her up off the ground with her to tell off heaven. The two end up standing side by side almost at the same moment, but they don't spontaneously make the decision to jump up together. Emily grabs the demon's hand and flies up, pulling Charlie up beside her. The metaphor alone is great, lifting up a demon to where Adam was a moment ago, but the character choice understanding that Emily - the one who should be far more conflicted about telling off the other angels - is the one that spurs the action and pulls the demon up to stand beside her as an equal in defying the rest of them is just... *chef's kiss* The attention to detail is brilliant in this song. Even when it goes by so fast you have to pause to see what's going on.

After the season finale, I have a theory (A FILM THEORY) about what allows a soul to ascend to heaven. Simply put, it's love. Love is called out in correlations to two specific characters: Vaggie, who got her angel wings back after realizing she has to fight for her love for Charlie instead of her hatred towards her former companions, and Sir Pentus, who declared his love to Cherry bomb before his demise (which might have been what allowed his ascension). Might be far fetched, but maybe season 2 will give us an answer on the matter.
@noway37710 ай бұрын
I think you're onto something, but I think what gets you into heaven is just being an honest and selfless person. Sir Pentious sacrificed himself to save everyone else. He showed he had a good heart, and I think that's what ultimately gets you into heaven in the end.

@noway37710 ай бұрын
@@arielcahn7728 Exactly, Moxxie and Millie came to mind when I wrote my original comment. After finishing the show, I think what gets you into hell is what God thinks of you. I do think love is a good reason to get into heaven, but I don't think it's the only requirement. A lot of characters in the show have someone they love dearly, yet they're still considered sinners and haven't ascended yet. In the Bible, the only one who determines if you get into heaven is God himself. So I imagine he is the one who ultimately decides the fate of the characters in the show. I imagine you must prove yourself to him, and if he decides your worthy of redemption, he'll allow you to ascend. That's probably why the Angel's couldn't give Charlie a clear answer on what gets a person into heaven, and why Sera said "we only know when a souls shows up here" or something along those lines. Because they don't know what determines if someone is worthy of being in heaven, only God gets to make that call. But that's just a theory, a FILM THEORY! I'll see myself out...

One detail I like is that, when Sera says "Do what was required," there is fire in her eyes. She's also smiling.
@frederickglass15835 ай бұрын
That's a dead giveaway that the Exterminations are NOT "required", Sera is allowing Adam to partake in them for the fact she is defending the COMFORT of Heaven, not doing what "was required" There was no backlog to be had should the Hotel succeed, Sera's lie to quench Adam's bloodsport got exposed in holy court and Sera went full panic for the fact that her little sister now doubts EVERYTHING Sera has told her. TL;DR Sera lied in a holy congress to essentially "Toe the Line/keep the Status Quo" and got called out on her bullshit by her little sister & Charlie. Then again, Adam let her secret slip due to his cockiness

I think it's similar to how when Charlie gets riled up she goes full demon princess with the horns and all. Same with Lucifer when he lost it while he was beating on Adam. Sera is upset and we're catching a glimpse of her true form, so her extra eyes are showing. It happens to Emily a few times too. Extra eyes open on her chest and halo when she gets emotional.

I'm personally wondering if its even POSSIBLE for Angel to get redeemed anytime soon; sure, he's making incredible progress, but the way I see it, there's one kink in the plans: his service to Valentino. Is it even possible for Angel to be redeemed when Val owns him? What happens if he does go to Heaven still? Is there nothing Val can do about it?

So I'm going to say it, just to be a contrarian. A few good deeds don't make up for a lifetime of sin and evil. Nobody is evil all the time, and even bad men can love their mamas or their friends. It would (or at least, it should) take a truly repentant heart and many good deeds. That's why Pentious made it. He was committed to changing himself, and really leant into the whole redemption thing. And in the end, he made the ultimate sacrifice for his friends.
@daniellehohensee20216 ай бұрын
AND, additionally now that I think about it, Angel wasn't repentant. I understand that Angel's being abused and mistreated, but that's no excuse. He's not repentant. He's selfish and self-absorbed and makes no effort to improve himself or his circumstances.
@monicaavgust76256 ай бұрын
Yes. Sorry my broken English. Alastor, for example, canonically loves his mother very much. But that doesn't change the fact that he is a serial killer. But it can't be called the ultimate evil either. He knows how to forgive, he isn't vindictive, he is ready to help those in need or friends. But he doesn't repent of what he did. It’s truly impossible to write everything down on paper. Too many subtleties.

I’m stupid and am struggling to understand it, could you please explain?
@joelellks40639 ай бұрын
@@lukesoddlife I can jump in! I love analyzing literary works. When Adam sung Hell is Forever, what he means is that once you go to Hell, there's no going back or redeeming yourself. When saying "if Hell is Forever, Heaven must be a lie", that section is a reprise of Hell is Forever, and what they mean is that if a demon redeems himself but cannot go to Heaven, and an angel already in Heaven can do whatever they please now (Adam), then Heaven is lying about being a place of virtue.
