I still remember the smell of going in his house. I gave him one of those old mandolins on his wall. I sold him a few guitars and bought a few from him as well. I bought a 1918 gibson L-4 from him and played it for about 10 years then sold it back to him so he would take care if it. What a great person he is. I learned a ton about repair from him and have fixed many instruments since then. Even an old 1915 F2 Gibson mandolin that was stepped on. I used what he taught me and brought it back to life.

Thanks for posting Gary. Charlie repaired a guitar for me in 1971 in Duluth. His FL shop looks just like his MN shop he had in his home. I spoke to him in about 2012 I think on one of his trips back to MN. We talked about glue. :-)

First time I have seen this interview. Seeing Charlie in his element brings his voice and manner to me. A friend, more than a good friend. The best. I liked the part where he mentions me giving him Jirousek #1 which he made for my best friend Bruce Berglund. I traded it for an eighteenth century C.F. Minel viola. He hated to part with that viola but I see that 12 string and how many times he and I and Bruce played together at the Riverside Cafe come flooding in. A fresh wave I can hear the joy and their laughter. Both gone now and I miss Charlie and Bruce immensely. Still have an F style arrowhead mandolin. For sale actually. So I have a guitar that was either mostly finished by Charlie or was collected by him. It is a real gem. A strange guitar for a few reasons. One of which, it is nameless. There is no label or anything written on the instrument to know where it came from. I bought it from a guy who bought from Charlie's estate sale after he passed. I've been looking ever since for his guitars online, to see if anyone is selling any and I never come across any, not even in old, already sold postings. Does anyone know what he labelled his guitars as? Was it just under his name or did he sell them under a different title? Just curious, I'm not actually looking to buy anything.
