"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

There's a contrast between the Old testament and new testament. In Christianity the OT law isn't as significant as the new. Old testament says "stone them"; new testament says "love and forgive everyone". Charlie's wrong here to quote the OT. Jesus didn't say stone them...he said "he who is without sin cast the first stone", and then "go and sin no more". Completely different authors in these books

As someone who has done deep dives into the most taboo subjects pertaining to human sexuality, hearing someone say that being gay is nothing more than sexual behavior is like if you went up to someone fascinated with space travel and told them the earth is flat. Being gay is not behavior, it is rooted in the biochemistry. Personally I would like to move to bigger and more complex discussions about sexuality that most people don't understand, but we keep getting stuck on debating this one element of homosexuality that's just not a question any more. We've had the answer for decades now, but Kirk still believes 2+2=banana.

Honestly from a christian perspective Kirk is right here. As an atheist myself, I can't stand when people whitewash the atrocity of the morality in the bible, by just pretending it supports gay people and that it doesn't endorce slavery and that it's all about love. To be clear tho I'm glad that Rachel is as she is and that she's not a psycho like kirk, but kirk does represent the ideology or the book more accurately and exposes the religion for what it is, truly barbaric and brutal. I wish people like Rachel would see that and just be good people without the baggage of the religion.
@maximgruner
@maximgruner 4 ай бұрын
What do you mean from a Christian perspective? You’re an atheist, you aren’t providing a Christian perspective. Properly understanding the Bible isn’t whitewashing. Most slavery abolitionists were Christian and Christians were fighting to abolish slavery since the early church period. Saying the Bible endorses slavery is an insult to all of the brave warriors who actually did something about slavery. The Bible is all about love. That’s literally the whole point of it. The Bible doesn’t provide humanity with any morality, there is no morality in the Bible. The Bible tells us about God and about how He loves us.

Not defending Charlie Kirk's awful morality, but just to clarify what happened: In Matthew Jesus was referencing Leviticus 19:18. Kirk's point was to use context to prove that according to the Bible verse that Jesus cited, "love your neighbor" does not mean to accept anything your neighbor does. Christians also point to how Jesus dealt with prostitutes to make the same point. He showed them kindness but also told them to stop sinning. He's technically correct about the Bible. However, imo this also demonstrates why the Bible is a poor basis for morality if you take the whole thing as the literal word of God with no contradictions.

As someone who was raised Christian, if these guys really want to nitpick the Bible, Christ himself taught the Pharisees (The Jewish religious authority of his time) a lesson in a very similar circumstance. (Read More) Long story short, a woman was brought before Christ, and told that she had been caught in adultery. The Pharisees tried to get Christ to contradict their law (and have cause to arrest him) by quoting Moses from the same portion as Charlie Kirk, stating that adulterers were to be stoned. They then asked what he thought. As the record goes, Christ knelt and began to draw something in the dirt with his finger. Then he looked up at them and said, "He among you that is without sin, let him first cast a stone at her." And the Pharisees, taking his words into consideration, eventually walked away one by one, and left the woman alone. Then Christ asked the woman, "Woman, where are thine accusers? Hath any man condemned thee?" The woman: "No man, Lord." Christ: "Neither do I condemn thee. Now go, and sin no more." The moral of the story being that before we raise judgments against others, especially scathing or heavy judgments, we ought to first look within ourselves, and have compassion on those who either think or live differently than us. Because, in reality, we have no idea what the other party has been through, nor what their circumstances are. Therefore, when possible, it is incumbent that we learn to understand and have compassion on our fellow man.

When Charlie Kirk says that God's law is perfect, he is referring to the MORAL law of God, not specific civil or criminal penalties under the Law of Moses. The overwhelming Christian consensus, both Catholic and Protestant, is that in Christ's New Covenant the moral commandments (such as the Ten Commandments) remain valid but that the specific penalties under the Mosaic Law are now obsolete. A commandment may remain valid before God and conscience as a moral norm without demanding that people be subject to criminal penalties for violating that norm. Jesus' pardoning of the woman taken in adultery is an example. He didn't nullify the moral commandment against adultery itself, even while he rejected the harsh penalty. In a similar way, the ritual precepts (sacrificial and dietary laws, etc.) are no longer binding for Christians, who live under the New Covenant of Christ. St Mark says that Jesus "declared all foods clean" (Mk 7.19). This is also clear from Acts 15, where the Apostolic Church recognized that the ritual precepts of the Law of Moses were not binding upon Gentile converts. The ritual Law was meant to prepare the way for Christ (see Galatians 3.24-26: "So that the Law [of Moses] was our custodian until Christ came, that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a custodian; for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith." The Letter to the Hebrews is all about this. So pork and shrimp are no longer a problem, and since the Cross of Christ is the thing that all the Old Testament sacrifices prefigured, the bloody animal sacrifices and the Jerusalem Temple are also obsolete now. You may still not be persuaded that the biblical statements are anything other than ritual taboos, but Charlie Kirk's stance shouldn't be caricatured as wanting to apply Old Testament penalties.

The New Testament condemns homosexuality too. Read Romans 1. Paul is very clear that those who partake in it are worthy of death, but unlike in the Old Testament era Paul clarifies that they can repent and become Christian disciples.

@@bobbun4369why do you insist on there being a definitive version of Christianity, when Christian’s themselves can’t even agree on that? Romans 1:26-28 26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. 28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done.

Maybe call for yourself to be punished first if you want to be taken with any degree of seriousness.
