@@Elite59 Parker composed this tune when or after his spell in the Camarillo sanatorium. Did not affect his genius but in the end drugs and alcohol won. Coincidence =- Yesterday a watched a film doco about the English singer Amy Winehouse. What a voice!. The lyrics she wrote to some of her songs. Tony Bennett said she could have been a jazz singer equal to Ella or Billie Holiday had she lived. A life ruined. Thankfully the music lives on.

Whenever I hear Charlie Parker it reminds me of my Uncle Joe (whom I adored) - he loved jazz and introduced me to all the greats when I was just a kid - greatest guy ever - miss him a lot.

The more I listen to Bird the more I realise just how much he 'WAS' the birth of modern jazz music. This song is actually a great example of that because you have Bird's signature bop playing style here, which is followed by Wardell Gray's (excellent) solo at 0:55 using a more traditional jazz sound. I honestly can't fathom how Parker was coming up with those lines when there was NO real reference point for them -- it was completely alien at the time....and yet nowadays, pretty much anyone who plays jazz is (whether they realise it or not) playing while using CP's vocabulary.

Not true, Parker pulled a lot of tricks and sounds from the playing of Lester Young. Now if you want to talk about inspiration from out of the blue, you should look there...
@chrisrobbins2632 Жыл бұрын
@@kevinchan1598 And then you find that Lester got a lot of his ideas from X who got his stuff Y and so on and on it goes. Capiche?
@kevinchan1598 Жыл бұрын
@@chrisrobbins2632 Not denying that Lester had his influences (he even supposedly carried around Frank Trumbauer's recording of "Singin' The Blues' wherever he went), but the difference in approach of Lester and his influences vs. Parker and his influences was much greater. Perhaps out of the blue was not the correct term there, but you can more easily trace Parker's inspiration (as in name musicians) more so than Lester's. Capiche?

Ce titre fut composé par the bird pendant son séjour de six mois dans l'institut psychiatrique de Camarillo (Californie). On croirait une musique inspirée de la riviéra française dans les année 50...chef-d'oeuvre !

I lived in Camarillo for exactly a year. And when people aren't around, and your taking a quiet walk by yourself, if you listen hard enough, you might be lucky enough to hear this playing in the background.

Charlie Parker once more had to 'dry out'. The location was a sanatorium at Camarillo. That track was mon a 'Jazz Sampler' mix of tunes and composers on a LP back in 1950. Pressing from a small German company.

And whaddya say about Barney Kessel's guitar, and Dodo Marmarosa's anticipation of Monk? Crown it with some mean blowing by Howard McGhee. An absolutely staggering assembly of talent!

I agree. However, I hear more Bud Powell than Thelonious Monk in Dodo Marmarosa's playing.

I've actually been to Camarillo when it was an insane asylum in the 80's. Me and my childhood buddies went to see their sister who was hospitalized there. We hit some mind altering substances on the way there from South Central! When my buddies told me we were going to Camarillo, I remarked Charlie Parker spent about 8 months there. They knew I was into music and replied of course you would know that. When people ask me what's the craziest thing you ever did, I tell them I got whacked out on a substance that will remain unnamed and visited Camarillo in California, an insane asylum. They're like, you're stupid....!!

Interesting enough, your mentioning of The Eagles' "Hotel California" in relationship to Doug Zander mentioning Steely Dan's "Parkers band"- Iv'e heard for years their "steely knives" reference was a response to Steely Dan's mentioning of The Eagles on their track "Everything you did." It all oddly comes full circle. Good lookin' out Bird !
