Opening in theaters May 10 and VOD May 17
Directed by: Mary Harron
Starring: Suki Waterhouse, Hannah Murray, Matt Smith, Sosie Bacon, Marianne Rendón, Chace Crawford
Years after the shocking murders that made the name Charles Manson synonymous with pure evil, the three women who killed for him-Leslie Van Houten (Hannah Murray), Patricia Krenwinkel (Sosie Bacon), and Susan Atkins (Marianne Rendón)-remain under the spell of the infamous cult leader (Matt Smith). Confined to an isolated cellblock in a California penitentiary, the trio seem destined to live out the rest of their lives under the delusion that their crimes were part of a cosmic plan-until empathetic graduate student Karlene Faith (Merritt Wever) is enlisted to rehabilitate them. Convinced the prisoners are not the inhuman monsters the world believes them to be, Karlene begins the arduous process of breaking down the psychological barriers erected by Manson. But are the women ready to confront the horror of what they did? Boundary pushing auteur Mary Harron (American Psycho, I Shot Andy Warhol) presents a provocative new perspective on one of the most notorious crimes of the 20th century.

Those women are the victims of their own horrific behavior. They laughed and took joy in describing the last breaths of the innocent people they killed and how they pleaded for their lives. So yes, they are “scary creatures” and If this film was done from the victims’ POV, you’d see just how evil they really are.

@Aamer Kastoff leftist/feminist bullshit? Christ. You can't have complex, 3 dimensional people in this world? You can't have people who suffer from intense psychological trauma at the hands of someone else be it male or female? If we don't allow the stories of man(or woman)-made monsters to be told then we can't prevent it from happening in the future. We have to understand these people. What drove them. We won't agree with it, obviously, but without exploring their psychological profile... we're defenseless from preventing it. People aren't going to read peer-reviewed psychology journals, but they will watch a movie with a big name.

Victims of brain washing are rarely very sympathetic people. The are pathetic and weak which is why they are selected. What is interesting is how predators select them...because they make sure predators find them. Follow the fools to find the danger to humans. Psychopaths are herd cullers.

@Aamer Kastoff: Rot. I'm as leftist as they come and I detest Van Houten and the other women as much as I detest Manson. In England we had Myra Hindley, a murderer and sex-abuser of children. You don't have to be right-leaning to be glad she's dead and burning in hell.

I saw this film at my local movie theatre today here in NYC. Finally a film that is not an exploitation film about the Manson murders. Instead we get a character driven, script driven and intelligently told story about the three Manson female killers and their relationship to the Manson family. The story is absorbing, engaging and entertaining. This film will probably not do well even if it does get shown at mainstream Cineplex theaters as it does not focus on the graphic violence of the Manson killings and it delves far too deep into character to entertain mainstream audiences.

But I don’t get how they could have ever thought it was ever okay to kill someone.

wow, coupling the fact that this was coming out (though obviously nowhere nearly as wide) so close to "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood", and that it's got both Matt Smith and Hannah Murray in it, I'm kind of shocked I'm not even learning of its existence until today. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm the only Game Of Thrones viewer with this opinion, Gilly was actually always my biggest crush on the show lol Because of her character she was obviously always kinda "dressed down", but goddamn is she adorable. Can't blame my man Sam at all (btw he WAS the only person in all of Westerosi history to kill a White Walker AND kill a Thenn AND cure advanced stage Grayscale, to do ALL 3 of those things, and that's not even including surely being the only dude to ever get laid while still in the confines of Castle Black. sure other Nights Watch banged, but they had to sneak out to Molestown with a pro)

So: - Who cares about Charles ‘Tex’ Watson, right? In the end he is just a man; no scapegoat for him. - It was all fault of that guy who gived Manson the money for the song: that really pissed him off. - Such a shame Leslie didn't run away with Lorenzo Lamas. :/

this film had me torn. I did not expect Matt Smith to pull off charlie manson so well. he made me think he was him, so it was a good performance. also the girl who plays leslie van houten is british like matt, what I didn't like about the film is how the murders were portrayed in an unfair way. They kind of glossed over the tate murders, showing still a graphic scene of tate, but I thought they made more of a scene of the LaBianca murders in the film, portraying it more viscerally. why is it okay to gloss over one and not the other? I think its unfair(on The LaBiancas surviving family). Was this made by a woman who likes charles manson? it feels that way.

This actually looks like its done in a sensetive way, unlike how it is portrayed in AHS or That one haunting of Sharon tate thing.
