Hello, I am a junior at rutgers university, newark campus. I lived on campus for 2 years and now commute. One of Mayor Baraka’s best known initiatives is the Newark 2020 development plan. With Newark undergoing economic revitalization, there is a common concern about the rising cost of living. As part of Rutgers University, Braven Accelerator program we are currently researching for our Capstone challenge, to find solutions regarding the issues with the city’s housing programs. If anyone will like to participate I would send an email with a short questionnaire . Your participation and all of your responses are anonymous. We would love a response/opinions from our residents. ALSO Feel free to comment down below any opinions/feedbacks as newark residents and your experience with housing cost in the city! We would really to connect and understand better the core issues. Thank you we highly appreciate it!

Most of Newark is pretty grimy. The north ward has been very active lately and the central/south/west are always active. I’d say the worst areas currently based on the drug activity, abandoned homes and apartments, shootings, and overall crime would be the area of freylinghuysen Ave,van vecten st, evergreen st. The whole area is an open air market for dope and crack and prostitution is out in the open. It’s definitely not a nice place to live or hang out. The other area I would say is the currently the worst would be the area of the Newark and Irvington border near south 20th, south 21st, Hopkins pl, Ellis Ave, and that whole area. It really looks like a ghost town with almost entire blocks with all abandoned houses and feins and homeless people living in them. Lots of drug activity and gun violence in that hood. Honestly all the number blocks plus the streets east of south 10th from Clinton to south Orange Ave between Irvine turner up to grove st in Irvington is a wild area. 18th Ave is notorious for being crazy. 14th Ave down by NCC was completely drug infested for a long time until the feds raided Hayes and 14th and indicted the whole block, since then there’s still drug activity but it’s spread out to other areas that have taken over as more of an open air market like Oscar miles village between court st and Mercer st. Don’t forget the blocks the stretch between lyons Ave and chancellor in the south ward and even in the north ward you got spots like Steven Crane which is a known open air drug market and has its violence as well. Even grafton and that area is drug infested. You can basically get drugs anywhere in Newark and violence happens everywhere in the city as well

Some of my old neighborhoods. I also worked in the NPS as an IT specialist so know Newark very well and it is not as bad as it looks in this depiction overall. It has many fine areas: the historical Weequaihic section, born to NY Mayor Ed Koch, the great comedian Jerry Lewis, and writer Phillip Roth, and of course the great singer Sarah Vaughn is from Newark. And the famous Ironbound Portuguese section, where many Latin American and Spanish immigrants live and where the movie, War of the Worlds was partly made, and other sections that have great neighborhoods: The West Ward--Vailsburg section, the North Ward, and a revived Central ward. Newark has two great magnet schools, Science High and Arts High where many famous talents graduated from. On the other hand, sure, there are many broken-down homes particularly in the Weequaihic section and Central ward. This is due to lower-middle-class poverty and the Newark Riots of 1967(which still affects Newark) and the 2008-9 recession. But Newark is on the upswing…slowly.

You didn't go all the way to 16th Ave-- I would have died inside if you did! Can't find the lie, though. Wouldn't live there anymore. That shxt has changed...

It's obviously a ghetto of significant proportions, yet at least 95% of the parked cars are newer than mine. Taking care of the car you have makes much more financial sense than forever replacing it so you can appear cool to your friends. And how does being unemployed prevent you from picking up debris that lies between your front door and the street? If anything, you should have MORE time on your hands to do simple chores such as litter collection.

Sad to see. My family settled here in 1855-all buried in Woodland-most lived on Bergan St-don’t think those buildings are still there-I remember looking out of my Aunt’s apartment n could see Woodland-it was pristine & manicured. Now it’s overgrown, vandalized. Most of my family left after the ‘67 riots. Still have cousins there. Somewhere
