I remember my first week I met 3 women A mother and 2 daughters. The mother was late 30's and just started her 3rd sentence. I knew that I wasn't going to have any help in prison or when I got out. But just as much as I knew that to be true I knew I wasn't going to make that my life. Just thinking about it was the easy part. Actually putting in the work, learning how to be accountable for my actions and choices and keeping myself away from around people that didn't have my best interest at heart was the real shit. Now I'm 44 and I thank God on a daily for giving me the strength and love to make it through.

Jesus set me free from that life style and I never want to go back to it ... Everyone I grew up with is dead or still in prison and won't ever get out ... I don't know why Jesus spared me from life in prison or death but He did so I want to make the best of it instead of go back to it .... The attitudes are simply a mask of learned helplessness. I guarantee most of these guys don’t even think they are capable of anything else because they were raised by their elders to believe that “this is it.” Either you make it or you end up in prison/dead. What are the parents doing? How are they living? Even the parents that aren’t on drugs or gangbanging I guarantee don’t have the resources to convince their sons that they are better and bigger than the projects or what society has made the black man think he is. My father always told me “ghetto is a mentality.” When he made it out, he knew a lot of his friends weren’t going with him and they would be exactly where they are at when he got back. It’s doesn’t matter what city you are in. It’s always the same narrative.

I grew up about a mile from here in Eastlake not the projects but was still not an ideal area back in the 90s & 2000s. All of the neighborhoods are slowly getting gentrified around this area. Ironically about a mile to 2 miles from gate city is the richest neighborhood/city in all of Alabama Mountain Brook. And gentrification in Birmingham doesn’t mean rich white people moving in… Birmingham is a lot more diverse than people realize well the Birmingham metro area as a whole. It’s a mix of white black and Latinos. Younger people are making a serious effort, IMO, to turn the page here. BTW, any of you from Birmingham remember my mom Mrs. Skinner? She was a music teacher at Barrett elementary Kingston and Bush Hills Academy.

I fondly remember Mrs Skinner. I had a Hellish and Unhappy Childhood. My "father" abused and abandoned the family when I was quite young. He left my Dear Mother alone with me and two sick and dying children who finally passed at twelve and thirteen years old. Mine was not a life of peace and comfort. Your Precious Mother went above and beyond her duties as a school teacher. She was a Friend to the friendless, she brought a welcome light to those who dwelt in the dark. She gave hope to the hopeless. Here I still exist at fifty five years old and though my flaws remain legion, I can honestly say that to this very day I continue to Like, Love and Respect Mrs Skinner. In a world Filled to overflowing with evil and parasidic people, Mrs Skinner was a beacon of Love, Optimism and Kindness. SHE BETTERED MY BAD and contributed to much of the good and decency that now dwells within me. I fear to think of the monster I very well could have been had I not known her. Teachers often wonder if0 they "Make A Difference", I assure you that your Precious Mother Bettered This Bad World. To this day, I still love her. Your post has warmed my heart and wet my eyes. I wish you and yours All That Is Good. Eddie Wood, Hendersonville NC.

And all 6 walked over and said "sure Mama, what is it you need help with"? I Told them and I said "I can't find that address, that road "Y"s off and the GPS says nothing" one young man said "oh. I know where you're trying to get to, its just a few blocks, we will walk you there if you want us to, because where you are , it's a 8 block turn around because of the one way streets" I Said "would you?! I would be so thankful "! One young man said "lock your car up, and we'll be glad to walk you". I locked it up and while we were walking there , a Bham cop pulled up and asked if I was ok ( 1 older white woman and 6 young black men all strapped with semi autos I reckon I looked out of place) one of the young men said "she alright. We're helping Mama find her son.. you can follow if you want to,, but she's ok" I smiled and said "oh yeah, I'm fine"... cop went on and we all talked and Laughed as we walked....3 blocks later we found my kid and the 6 young men helped us get it started and we all got in and took them back to where they started and me to get my car. I tried to pay them for their help and they refused. That same cop, stopped me on the way out of the Burroughs, and he said "the kids you were walking with are some of the most dangerous gangs around" I said "well evidently, a little respect goes a long ways,, and I'm not an enemy now, am i"? He shrugged and walked off. I went to the corner store and bought 6 Gatorades, (it was a hot day) and 6 packs of smokes, just in case, (I smoke, they might too you know?) I took it back and they thanked me and I got 6 hugs. You never know where respect and kindness is appreciated. I sure did appreciate it! They did too. Be kind. Be respectful. My dad grew up in this area around Rugby Ave and it’s sad how Birmingham is still segregated and suppresses people in many ways. If you drive 5-10 min away from here (near airport) you’re seeing multi-million dollar houses, just bizarre. Primary difference as far as I can tell is a school district, property value/generational wealth and access to opportunity.

Every time one of these videos gets posted people talk about how they can't understand anything the guys in them are saying ... well yeah, they speak a dialect which is pretty distant from what you'd call "standard American English", and why would they speak any other way when they're sitting around smoking weed and shooting the shit in a parking lot? I think part of the reason why CharlieBo puts up these videos is so you can come into contact with things you don't understand, that might be "off-putting" to you as an outsider (perhaps for a very good reason) or which seem just downright wrong, and ask yourself "how can this be normal for a person?". Glad to have the ability to watch these. I feel they have brought me to a lot of insight I wouldn't otherwise have had.
