Absolutely brilliant. I have never laid a brick in my life, but I've worked with apprentices for the last 20 odd years and this is the best training they can get. They may not really understand it now, but the way you explain body position, posture, mechanics and the robotics of correct laying will stand them in great stead now and in the future. Great stuff, well done Charlie.

Comments are spot on,from a retired brickie...do your apprenticeship,do varied work the next 7-8 years-new build,refurbs,extensions,manholes etc do various "finishes" on facework-jointed,flush,weather struck pointing etc...and as Charlie has said "enjoy it,make your £" and then "the worlds your lobster sahn" quote of Arfur Daley! hahaha,all the best and good luck to you lads from a retired brickie Piers a.k.a. It's very easy for ignorant people to criticise bricklaying as a trade by claiming that it's simple, but this video should surprise them by showing how technical it can be. It really isn't something you can expect to just do correctly the first time.

This is a fantastic video…. the greatest bricklaying advice to anyone starting out on the trowel is to use your eyes and judgement to lay more than double checking yourself with a level and if begin your bricklaying career like this as you advance in skill of laying bricks you would also get better and better at eyeing and checking your work less there for would be a very efficient bricklayer….. Charlie is the proof 👍

The trick to interior brickwork, particularly fireplaces is really dry pug. Muck that would suit outdoor work will result in cement bleeds all over the interior stuff. So dry pug, and point as you go. Speed is not of the essence in fireplace building. You're putting something in place that people are going to live with, and look at, for years. Once the pug's gone off a PVA coating makes it easier to clean and less of a dust magnet. Cheers.

I remember every day, the old boys that taught me . I still have some of their tools and I told my apprentices about them. These lads will remember this and at least they can still watch it in the future. We have always had passionate tradesmen, unfortunately they never want to move into the more political elements of building. if they did we would have apprentice schools in every town, and far better modern buildings. Too many pony architects and accountants run the construction industry.
@martin246610 ай бұрын
@1paparico What precisely do you mean when you say " the more political elements of building".?
@1paparico10 ай бұрын
@@martin2466 means they may become really successful building contractors, with hundreds of workers, but none venture into a position where they can tell the government how it really is. Before they get to that point they are already part of the system, which in my opinion is flawed. Teaching apprenticeships, for instance, is mired in red tape and is a very unpleasant experience for small contractors. There may well be builders in parliament, but they have no sway over the civil service who draw up these training plans.
