I was a bricklayers assistant for three months. It was at my peak fitness when I was 20yrs old. I swear it was the hardest job I ever had to do. By lunchtime my leather work gloves would already have holes in them and my back and arms would be in agony. I have no idea how some guys do that job for decades. Nothing but respect for them.

My dad was a self-employed brick mason. When my brothers and I were teenagers, we'd assist him, his other brick masons, and laborers on construction sites, mixing mortar, supplying mortar on the mortar boards, stacking bricks to be in the masons' reach, and occasionally handing him bricks directly so that he can move faster. This guy is intentionally going slow to show the process because we were moving 10 times faster than this. I didn't care for it at the time, but now that he's gone, it's some of the best memories I have of him.
