Looking great, Charlie! 10/10 audio and video, love the foreshadowing :) The clarification of what the 'design phase' means is also excellent.

If you are using teflon o-rings (ie most common type of fluoropolymer o-rings) make sure NOT to use teflon grease. As a general rule of thumb, like dissolves like and so using teflon grease on teflon rings will slowly weaken the seal until one day BAM! Keep up the amazing work, and looking forward to your next video!

thank you so much for the solidworks next to you while you're talking. everything was much more understandable :) just one thing I think you should zoom out a bit, everything is a bit too close.

Dude, I met you at MIT some years ago. It was pretty cool to find your channel. Just a quick tip: the unscripted talking was WAY better. You would certainly get more subscribers if you stuck with that. Good luck!

You might want to center the lead screw in the plane of the valve lever (or as close as possible) and attach a traveler which can engage the valve lever from both sides of the traveler. This will minimize possibility of seizing and remove the need for a guide rod.
@AstroCharlie5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the mounting features for the valve occupy that same plane... Definitely worth some thought.

Charlie where did you find Krytox that is cryogenic? All I've been able to find is Krytox compatible with temperatures down -100 degrees Fahrenheit, but nothing lower like for LOx

This was my favorite episode, by far. Hearing you talk about the design pivots in real time was amazing.

Looks like an interesting project. Subscribed. :)

Looks like a pretty compact solution! I recon you should maybe move the guiding rod as close to the lead screw as possible to reduce the chance of the traveller digging in and getting stuck. Either that or put a tophat into the traveller to give it more surface area to slide on!

Love the videos. Why not just use a high-torque servo? Readily available from places like hobbyking and cheapish.

Unless there is an extreme Temperature Gradient across the Potentiometer it would still work, because it is a Voltage Divider. If the Resistance of one side changes the other one will change aswell.

my god, that's gotta be the cheesiest intro I've seen in a while it's not bad, necessarily, it certainly doesn't detract from the fact that this is a good video about amazing highly technical rocket stuff, it doesn't make it worse, and it's certainly better than the self-srrious intros useless vlog channels use, but still ... that animation tho it's so bad it's good like if you're using comic sans in a leaflet ...

i personally would have used a servo for the valve actuation. you can get a 60kg one that relitivly light and the setup may be simpler. AND. you get positional accuracy too all in one package.

Vent hole in Lox valve so it does not blow up when closed..... DAM, i am glad i saw this before testing my Ethyl/Lox engine. A Lox valve blowing up after the test would be embarrassing, also has a high rick of harming anyone near by.
@MarkFunderburk5 жыл бұрын
I can't imagine this is actually cheaper than using a pneumatic actuator? I was pricing out some for our valves and was able to find them for under $100 pretty consistently, add about $30 for a solenoid then you just need to mount them together. Assuming you have nitrogen/air onboard anyways. This is probably more compact though, the way you talked about the water jet makes me think you have free access to one so I can see why you would leverage that if it's the case.

I love your videos man! So good, I'm learning a lot. I might actually start designing one liquid rocket engine in my first year(gonna start like about a month from now). I even got this book "Modern Engineering Design of Liquid Propellent Rocket Engines by Dieter K. Huzel and David H. Huang(Updated by Rocketdyne division of Rockwell international). Great read.!.

Hey what about the propellent tanks? They need to be capable of handling very high pressures right?, and for the cryo liquid oxygen which material the tanks must me made of? Stainless steel?

Alu also works well for cryo. Alu is actually stronger at crygogenic temperatures.
