You could redesign a beer tap to feed head pressure and empty the propellant as well The nozzle can probably be put together like the old nasa style if you give it multiple small high performance engines instead of just one. Making small components would be quicker when testing different designs I test propulsion devices for a living if you want advice 🚀 would love to see keg-rocket take flight and go farther than anyone thought

Thanks for the thoughts here. We did consider multiple smaller chambers but were slightly concerned about the consequences if one of them failed to light. I like the idea about incorporating a beer tap.

Since you're doing shots of moonshine now, it's kinda like a Jagerbomb! Cant the launch pad be called the Keg Stand? The feed system will help keep it from needing turbo pumps and other insane to engineer challenges. All you need now is just the combustion chamber, and to tinker around with the alcohol blow down gas being NOT AIR for obvious safety reasons. Argon, helium or propane might work but the pressure in the ethyl alcohol tank will be varied differently. The total oxygen amount to get 1/3rd liquid, and the orifice sizes to get appropriate flow are all going to be different constants or variables, but I would map the alcohol to the oxygen's natural flow for simplicity unless throttling is a must. You'll need to throttle one of the valves differently than the other to get a consistently fuel rich burn as the oxygen will evaporate much differently than the alcohol, so you will have two different pressure decay rates. Also you may want more alcohol to get more cooling without adding more specific impulse because there is no oxygen to turn it into power. One approach is to make a test rig for your engines and just try a bunch of combinations, you may find throttling the engines either super easy, super hard, or completely optional. The other contemplation is how to get maximum height and speed, with variables such as burn time, thrust level... Maybe there is an optimum, or maybe just full send, since there will be a 1g acceleration working against you. The less time you fight that 1g the better, but there are structural limitations of course and you don't want a dented beer can at max q. Good luck! I wanna see space men and women take sips of fuel on the ISS as soon as you can get it to them! XD

You can use liquid CO2 to pressurize fuel tank. it's 76 atm at standard temp, wich is compatible with Keg pressure limit. A rubber inner tube can be used to separate CO2 from Fuel and Liquid Oxigen. So you can have constant pressure for all the flight.

Seems to me that acceleration would help out feeding of fuel, and, at a constant feed rate, acceleration would increase as fuel is burned and overall weight drops off. Secondly, the pressure difference between the inside and outside of the tank would increase as the rocket climb, both considerations leading to there not being as much loss of feed rate. Also, to the degree that the feed rate falls off, the pressure in the engine would also drop off, so the back pressure in the fuel lines resisting flow would be less. By the way, the V2 used alcohol (I read 75%) and liquid oxygen.
@BPBomber10 ай бұрын
Just like your 2L bottle demonstration, I experience that same effect in practice using a pump garden sprayer to spray weeds. As the amount of liquid it contains decreases, to a point, the sprayer seems to work better and better.
@KegRocket10 ай бұрын
Exactly!
@babygorilla423310 ай бұрын
I like how I immediately understood why you want less propellant in the tank because it's exactly how the garden sprayer I use to water plants works. As you pump more out there's more gas to pressurize so it runs out slower and pumps the fluid more smoothly. I water my plants by rocket science cool.

how about the oxygen tanks pressure? The super cold oxygen will warm up and boil off increasing pressure and the pressurized air will decrease in pressure being chilled by the oxygen. maybe fill and pressurize the ethanol tank then fill the oxygen tank without pressurizing it then monitor the pressure in the oxygen tank as it rises until it reaches the desired pressure and then ignite?
@KegRocket10 ай бұрын
The oxygen tank (keg) will be vented to the atmosphere until final countdown and then pressurized with nitrogen. As long as the vent valve is not shut for too long, it should not be an issue

@adamrak756010 ай бұрын
you might want to use 96% ethanol and not 99%. It is cheaper, and burns a bit cooler, with almost the same performance. If you have engine temperature troubles, you can easily go down to 60% ethanol + 40% water, which should perform okay, but burn "very cool"*. * for a given value of "very cool"
@BSpinoza21010 ай бұрын
Cooling and keeping the LOX cold is going to be....challenging. You're going to need some insulation, not to mention the complete cluster f*k that is dealing with LOX. Cleaning is going to be king, as any dust particle or stray hair provides fuel for the LOX that can be ignited, and it will ignite, LOX always finds a way.

Great question, there is also the atomization of the ethanol to consider, and at what temperature, then the viscosity of the liquids and the pressures of each, then the G forces. Check out "EXTREME ROCKET!!! O25,000" Gerald 'Skippy' and his 'death from above' O 25,000 motor rocket. He estimated 50 G's, built it for 100 G's, and pulled 75 G's. It is an awesome launch! WHOMP!

about the empty space for blowdown mode, its actually the exact same principle as for water rockets, around 33% is the most optimal amount of water compared to air, more water and it will lose thrust fast, less water and it will run out of water sooner without as much deltaV gotten, I am extremly happy of doing water rockets as a kid and knowing that from it

Wait? I'm an expert in avoiding The Kraken so Kerbals don't die... How can you have staggered duel LXO/liquid fuel tanks? Even IF it was a intermix ratio of 1:1, you'd have a rocket that is top/bottom heavy, light in the middle...which Jeb Kerbin is sus about. Alternative 1: Couldn't you cut the kegs and put a plate/gasket seal so bottom is 2/3 and top is 1/3...bottom is fuel+ comp air, top is comp air tank for maintaining pressure. Have a adapters in the plate as blow/pressure valves in: so its purely passive: moment fuel compartments pressure drops below X psi valves open and let extra comp air in. Alternative 2: Scramjet style pressurization Same 2/3 and 1/3 type separation of the kegs...but top compart. is ramjet style inlet valve to just provide pressurized air as rocket is flying: same blow valve approach, but you don't need the weight of the comp air on takeoff; you'll make it once rocket gets to speeds for it to work.

you should carbon fiber or kevlar wrap the kegs turning them into MUCH HIGHER pressure POVs for pressure fed rocket.
@accordv6er6 ай бұрын
Has anyone used any sort of kinetic ram that leverages the existing weight of the propellant and some check valves to get slightly more pressure at the end stages of tank discharge? Not worth the weight? Or a spring/some sort of accumulator that can be charged alongside the pressure over/liquid setup here? I'm imagining a gas shock's floating piston essentially... I guess these don't work with the kegs, and additional cylinders that can take pressure are probably not worth the weight either. ... A design may still be worth considering. An internal bladder fed by a hose to a small accumulator with a spring in it, to keep pressure above a certain level.
