So I've been casually tutoring in English for some time, but I've never actually taught a beginner or an adult. This video has made this first lesson so much more manageable!

Thanks for this. I've been teaching English for a few different companies for five years now. I'm attempting to go independent and find my own students. I've been doing a few of these things but I really like some of the ideas like with the google forms about the interests. That's really helpful.

Great video. Thank you very much for the info and advice. Any tip on how to scale this template for a shorter class? 30 min or so.
@CharliesLessons
@CharliesLessons Жыл бұрын
I would probably get the student to do the level test before the class started. I would also remove the initial oral level test section and go straight to introductions.

Great content Charlie! Thanks for sharing. Quick question from someone who's trying to optimise their one-to-one classes. What's your approach on filling out the Google Forms? You said you do it in the first class together but do you send your student the questionaire? do you share your screen and you type in their answers? What would your best practice tip be on this?
@CharliesLessons
@CharliesLessons 6 ай бұрын
I think you can do it two ways. Either send it before class or do it with them. I think it's best to do it together because then you can dig a little deeper as to why they have certain interests and more background information.

I have just done an online one to one class following your lesson plan, and it was amazing!! 5 stars. The only thing that was a bit tricky was that the Google forms didnt save his responses, I was clicking on his answers but they didnt show as being chosen. I later realised that you can email them the form before hand, but I really wanted to complete it with the student. Any advice to do this part with them online, so they can see as you choose their answer?
@CharliesLessons
@CharliesLessons 8 ай бұрын
I haven't heard of the options disappearing like that. Perhaps send the form beforehand and then you can go through their answers on the linked Google Sheet?

great advice thanks - can you suggest some ideas for a 10-year-old boy who is A!? I find plenty of ideas for very young kids and groups but nothing for one-to-one complete beginners that are slightly older like 10/11. Thank you

Hello Charlie, thanks for your great videos. Really helping me building my online English lessons. I have a question. On the test-english website, there are now 5 levels (A1, A2, B1, B1+ and B2). I can't see the levels (A1, A1, B1, B2, C1, C2) you're talking about. Seems like things have changed ... Do you know what happened ? Thank you
@CharliesLessons
@CharliesLessons 9 ай бұрын
I do refer to the levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 but the website has always maintained those levels you mentioned. Just imagine that anything over B2 would be considered a C-level i.e. a C1 or C2. Also, remember that level tests are only guides to get started, you won't truly know the level of the student until you have several classes with them.

This is very helpful! Thanks so much! I'm about to embark on my first teaching assignment and have a question. I will be teaching ESL to a 12-year old girl - 20 hrs in 1 week ie 4 hours a day. I have my reservations about this rather gruelling schedule, but the parents would like her to do this. I have received an audio file to give me an idea of her oral capabilities and should shortly receive some sentences for a short writing test I've set. As this is an intensive course, I won't have time after the 1st lesson to then search online for learning resources etc for the topics she's most interested in. Would you advise asking the parents to send me such a list in advance so that I am able to at least do some prep? And do you have any other suggestions as to how to best prepare and structure the lesson plans? Many thanks in advance! I should add that the lessons are face-to-face (not online)
