I found the clip where Shannen says she didn't return for the finale because she didn't like the way Prue was written in, and that it felt inauthentic to the character. Since Alyssa was a producer, I imagine them completely ruining the character by having Prue say something ridiculous like "Phoebe I came back as a ghost to make sure you didn't give up on finding a man."

I swear the writers of seasons 7 and 8 didn't actually watch the rest of the show and were just given a vague plot synopsis given how much discontinuity with the rest of the show they have. I mean, they fuck up remembering the premise of the whole show, forgetting that the sisters didn't know they were witches at the beginning of the first season.
@interfrastically7 жыл бұрын
On the one hand I can't blame them for not watching the show, but on the other hand the contempt the sloppy writing shows for the audience is appalling. I had an odd relationship to the show: I watched quite a few episodes from the first two seasons but then didn't watch it for a few years because my schedule didn't fit with the broadcast times and although I did enjoy the show somewhat I didn't enjoy it enough to go to the trouble of recording it to watch when I did have the time. The next time I caught an episode it was well into the leads as producers stage and I actually thought I was watching an evil alternate universe episode like Mirror Mirror in Star Trek...

This is what Alyssa said in an interview with Variety which definitely explains why Charmed went downhill the minute Constance M Burge and Shannen left after the 3rd season. "But having said that, we were in a situation - and maybe it was by design, I have no idea - but we never saw our writers or knew where the writer’s room was or where Brad was. They were in a completely different building - I think it was the Spelling building, and we shot at Paramount. And it was so bad that sometimes we couldn’t even get him on the phone. Holly [Marie Combs] and I produced the last five years of the show, and when we would try to get him on the phone, we couldn’t get him. When we would get him on the phone, he wouldn’t have the script in front of him, so we just assumed he wasn’t in the office. We didn’t have an on-set producer so Holly [Marie Combs] and I took on that role. We would make on-set adjustments, because there was no one on set to make those adjustments. And Brad was the showrunner, so he ran the writer’s room. I don’t think that it was necessarily a bad way of doing it, because the show was on for eight years, but there were definitely moments where, as actors who also produced, we would look for dialogue changes and we were always very conscious about getting approval for them, and we were not able to get Brad on the phone. That was the extent of our interaction with him other than the few times he came down to the set for celebratory purposes - when we reached our 150th episode, or when we wrapped the final season. It was definitely a disconnect."

I mean, that may have been the case -but if you watch the show, it's very clear the actresses had a looooot of liberties and, at least, pitched several of the plots. See though, the reason you mention liking Billie here is the same reason a lot of people liked Chris. While the Charmed ones could legitimately not care less about helping others in season six, Chris was there trying to push them to stop demons, to literally protect their son's future, and to be a general audience frustration surrogate to their antics. The sisters were so unlikable, so self-absorbed, so unconcerned with anything beyond themselves, that it was a breath of fresh air to have someone actually call them out on it, and to occasionally get them to... actually do the jobs they're supposed to do: fight evil.

Yes. Even though they ignored him most of the time, he still at least commented and even yelled at them to get their arses into gear. Their selfishness and inability to connect with the people they were supposed to help obviously frustrated the hell out him and he made it known. I didn't realize it at the time as I was only about 10-11 when season 6 aired but looking back, and definitely when I last rewatched the show, it was cathartic to see Chris call the sisters out on their shit. Admittedly he pushed them to kill so many demons because he thought they might the ones to turn Wyatt evil so it was semi selfish, but for a good reason. Yes, Chris is one of my favourites even though he has many faults.

For a show that was trying to be like Buffy, they sure goofed up. Buffy never worried about being exposed as the slayer, she just saved lives. Buffy never decided to just not go fight some evil. Neither did any of her group. Also, Buffy never had stereotypically vacuous women as the focus of the show. I mean, Cordelia and Anya were about as far as it went and even Cordelia and Anya proved to be more than any of the charmed ones did.
@Khenfu_Cake5 жыл бұрын
Indeed. On BtVS they never really made any real effort at hiding the supernatural going ons. Sure Buffy and her friends didn't usually openly display it just for the heck of it, but if innocent lives were at stake (no pun intended) Buffy couldn't really care less about being exposed as The Slayer. Like The Charmed Ones Buffy also sometimes lamented her inability to live a normal life, but unlike the sisters she always ended up chosing her duty as The Slayer over her own desires. Heck, she was often more than willing to outright let herself be killed if it meant her loved ones or other innocents would be spared the same fate. BtVS even made a big deal out of using your powers wantonly or outright abuse them (namely with characters like Faith and Willow), and the consequences that might come from that (and not in the Charmed way of having them removed or the user punished in some manner like they were a child being scolded, but in more of a personal way that actually made for some interesting character arcs). Charmed outright had an in universe rule which dictated The Charmed Ones couldn't use their powers for selfless gain (a rule BtVS didn't have for its magic users) yet somehow Charmed let its protagonists get away with abusing their powers for selfish reasons on numerous occasions. And sometimes they even outright used them for evil. I could rant for ages about why Charmed failed so hard at trying to emulate BtVS, but I'll spare you that torment. Suffice to say; I love Buffy, both when it first aired and now, but I never got into Charmed. Considering my rant above that shouldn't come as a surprise.

ANYTHING more important and useful than doing her stupid hair? It's really a sign of how vapid, shallow, and just utterly disconnected from reality the show had become by this point.
@Indigo_Boi7575 жыл бұрын
@@gwendolynwestwind9764 I mean, fixing your appearance after something negative (granted maybe not after kidnapping but like say a breakup or a recovering from illness) is usually what people do bcos it's a quick-fix, a doable, practical task that can feel like progress and looks like real change as well. Counselling and all that is great but it's more subtle and understated , you can't immediately see the results and turnaround. I'm not saying it's the best way forward but it's relatable. Also that hair was dire need of rescue though...just saying. 😝

I loved this show, but you make some valid points. And you were funny, too. My biggest gripe with the finale was Prue not being there. They were time traveling, they could have picked up a teenage Prue (Shannon look alike) and have Grams unbind her powers temporarily.
@anthonyL19956 жыл бұрын
The final season was just really bad. There was supposed to be a Billie spin-off which is why they kept making her more and more powerful. The issue, is they built up 7 seasons prior that the three sisters were the most important witches. I agree that the constant wining about not having lives is annoying. It might not have been their choice in season 1 but when they were given the option to give up their powers later on they decided to keep them.

To be fair with the Book of Shadows bit, I think it was probably because they couldn't use the word grimoire. But every Witch should have a grimoire and on top of it, with the Halliwell family existing, you'd assume there would be other witch families (like the one Pagie's boyfriend was from) as well. So more books and utterly different outlooks on magic. That could have been an entire season on its own.

I LOVED it so much when I was younger, but the show ended in my senior year in high school, and the show was definitely not what it was when it ended. I stuck through it despite its flaws, and still find the great moments throughout it all. I would love to have seen how it would’ve been if Shannen got her way, but alas, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed and laughed so much this past week binging all these episodes. The fact that most of Phoebe's entire arc on the show was about opening herself up to love until the elders send her an insemination device was the most irritating arc on the show. Mostly because it lasted so long. It was years worth of guys teaching her the lesson to be 'open' to love. Because Phoebe was the world's slowest, most dimwitted witch who couldn't learn a lesson until a personality-less tube of semen showed up. (It also didn't help that Season 8 had Henry who for as little screen time as he got, was actually a lot more interesting than Coop. Mostly because he had an entire reason for existence beyond knocking Paige up.)

I wonder if this would be less infuriating if they didn’t have to save innocents. Like after the Source was gone they could retire from active duty, but the book of shadows remains a powerful target of demons, giving the show a reason to have new threats. Not saying it would make for a good show, but it would better than having them dodging responsibility.
@mysteriouslunar97795 жыл бұрын
Honestly, it might have been. There's plenty of shows that didnt revolve around saving innocents. I enjoyed Witches of Eastwick and The Secret Circle- those were about family, friends, and trying to adjust to life as a supernatural being and the perils it brought. Sometimes they saved normal mortals, but that wasn't really the focus. I think it would have let the writers do more without the sisters looking like superheroes who casually watched people get mugged, essentially, while they complained about not being able to go on dates.
@BML83847 жыл бұрын
Isn't it ironic that 'Charmed' became Charmless? By Season 8 all 3 were unlikable, surly and selfish. Shouldn't a subplot have been whatever happened to turn Paige from a fun, quirky, warm woman into a catty, sneering harridan? And, God, was Piper a Harpy!

Oh, my God....TVtropes has a “Drinking Game” section about Charmed. There are four points in Alison’s reviews that Alison points out, and I quote: “take a shot every time one of the sisters complains about not having a normal life,” “Take a shot every time Phoebe puts her career or dates as a higher priority than helping save lives,” “one shot every time the a sister gets transformed into something,” and “take a shot every time Darryl states that he's a cop/when he complains about helping the sisters.” (the last one is understandable in-universe, though).

I actually think Jennifer Morrison's arc as Emma was one of the better part of the show after season 3. Great review again! My boyfriend didn't believe me when I told him about some of the things this show did, so I had him listen to some of this. He didn't make it too far. I am around the 52 min mark where it's talking about premonitions. Again I can't just help but think of Buffy. In season 1 where the prophecy said she would face the Master and she would die and he would rise. She faced him anyway and the kicker was(spoiler) he said that she herself made it come true. He said if you never would have come then I couldn't rise, because he did so by killing her. The point is you don't have to commit to something just because it is written somewhere or you saw it in a vision. The slightest thing can throw a course of events off. You can't see yourself getting married then bam Well I just met a guy this is obviously my future husband and father of my kids. I can't even be sure she knew his last name when she decided that.
