One thing about Chen is that he doesn't have to go near the mic to be heard. He had always had that resonating voice. He said in an interview that he felt limited in his singing because, in the group, they were always given lines that suited their voices, and for him, that meant taking the lines with the highest notes. In his solo songs, you can see his wide range as an artist. I hope you can take a deep dive into his solo songs too.

Me too. I want them to discover more of Chen as a solo singer. His discography includes everything from rock to pop to ballads. They think he’s an anomaly now but I think if they heard him sing more they will have a fun time figuring out the method behind the magic of his Golden Voice :)

100% agree with you. As i am an Exo-L for a very long time since 2014. I do love all of them equally. But my bias is always Chen for his effortless singing and such an angelic voice. I agree Baekhyun cutie pie is also a great singer, but he improved him so much from before. All of them have continuing singing lessons. You can really tell with Kai and also with Sehun who were arguably the weakest singers of the lot how much they have improved in tonal quality and confidence since the beginning. I didn't even know Sehun could sing at all until recently. I missed Kai in this film as I would have like ya'lls commentary, but he is serving in the military right now.

I would say Chen might only be second to Hongki (FT Island) in terms of power. As much as I love Hongki, he tends to sing solo and doesn't really have to blend with others (in fact he said he has issues singing with others because he tends to overpower everyone). Chen not only is a such an amazing soloist but really knows how to use his voice in terms of singing with Exo. JYP is another singer who is guilty of what Hongki does - blasting at full volume at all times.

Doh Kyungsoo (D.O.) is truly a person that I have never seen before in my life. Not only in singing, but he's a famous actor in Korea and has always been the first choice of directors. His movie " The Moon" will be released on August 2. And he even has a degree in cooking. Apart from his talents, he has a very polite and humble, kind and gentlemanly personality. He loves his parents and that's why he has fans even in old age groups and everyone wants him to be their son or son-in-law. Even though he's an idol, he has always shown his true morals and behavior and has never acted in front of the camera. Everyone admires for being simple and always being himself.

I was thinking the same thing, how can they say that Chen has a small voice? When they sing together in this video, Chen’s voice is so loud that it stands out. But then again, it’s understandable that they doesn’t recognize his voice alone since they only heard few songs from him but to us EXOLs who knows EXO’s individual voices and even their laughter, we could easily recognize Chen’s powerful voice there. I've just been into Kpop since early 2000s, ever since I started watching K-Dramas & heard the music through that way. 😁 But, I still remember when these EXO boys were babies coming on the scene. Many years ago, when the 'ReacttotheK' channel brought real music students from the infamous Berklee College of Music, with a 54%! acceptance rate, started breaking Kpop songs down, was when I realized how great Chen's singing can be. Even better than Baekhyun's. 6 years ago they had classical vocalists react to Baekhyun & Chen singing on a show called "IMMORTAL VOICE" where they sang an older Korean song "Really I didn't know" and the # 1 comment on that video was about Chen, where one of those classical vocalists, i.e. Opera Singers, said "That boy got up to a fucking B!" It's no wonder the top comment on this video is about how silly it seems to have these folks critique how "small" his voice is when he not only is loud but has a wider and higher range than Baekhyun and has from the very beginning. He's just, over the years, learned to be a team player and do ONLY "his" part in the song and not to take the song over with his own vocal ability and act like a solo singer. 😉

Chen(wearing all-white) actually has the loudest and widest range vocals in exo. I remember there was a video where he was warming up his voice and everyone outside can hear him singing. So PLEASE LISTEN TO HIS SOLO ALBUMS IT’S REALLY GOOD you can hear his full voice really well and you will not regret it. EXO is a group where all the members can sing and dance and almost all of them can rap too. Kyungsoo's (D.O.) parts here in killing voice gave no justice to showcase more of his voice. It's always the one-liner but thank you for appreciating him. Like bruh, there is a lot here that didn't show half of their vocal abilities (maybe because of the choice of section to sing in that particular song) but thank you for the honest and expert opinions! He has the best lower register of any tenor in the kpop industry, he has the best mix in the group, the widest supported range, the most consistent resonance, the best sense of pitch, and a very strong upper register. Surely saying “Chen has a small voice, he would find it hard to fill a room without a mic” when the reality is the complete opposite would tip you off to the fact they’re not heralds of truth in their observations, especially when considering they’ve barely heard Exo sing and are just making surface level comments rather than doing a proper vocal analysis. Go back and look at what I said, he’s the best in 2 out of the 3 registers, has the best support etc. where do you think I pulled that information from? I didn’t just make it up. Watch and read around a bit more, you’ll quickly find that most professional vocal analyses (which examine a whole range of performances) puts Chen out in front, and almost all vocally knowledgeable fans agree with that assessment, for exactly the same reasons I gave in my first comment. Chen is undoubtedly the best, I feel like you’re not a big fan of him and are using this one video to defend your biases. I’ve given sound reasoning while all you’ve said is the people in the video (who were wrong on multiple observations) praised Baekhyun and Kyungsoo more than Chen.

Kyungsoo's vocal really stood out to me the most. He looks so effortless in singing and I find his voice very rare. Actually, without mic, Chen has the loudest and most powerful voice in the group. Also D.O. is having fun LOL! He looks like that most of the time but he's actually having fun and enjoying himself. The all white guy, Chen is the loudest guy in the group on or off mic. He's also got the biggest vocal range in EXO. He's definitely the golden voice as he never looses his voice even after a 6 day concert. And i believe he's controlling his pitch so that it doesn't drown out the other members voices. Do Kyungsoo aka D.O is definitely one of the most agile vocalist of kpop. His riffs and runs are heavenly. And the one you see here is just his default face and stature lmao Byun Baekhyun, the grey haired guy is has the best technique. He can effortlessly change the pitch and change from chest to head voice and vice versa. He's voice is one of my most favourite voice ever. As everyone else said, Chen has the most powerful voice and he's the one with the highest stamina. Chen has said that it was difficult for him to sing obsession live since he was dancing non-stop for 3 min and then sing the high notes (the highest is F5) but he said he practiced it and he nailed it.

just because he can sing a long time without getting worn out doesn't mean his technique is the best. he definitely has a tight sound and has to work really hard which is why he is better at loud high notes when it's easier to push air through and, like they said, he doesn't sing softly very well in comparison which is why his vibrato gets so choppy. he has improved a lot since the early days of exo but listening to him used to kind of exhaust me for these reasons. i'm a singer btw so like i know what it feels like to make those sounds.

In a live setting his voice can drown out everyone else's. Not to mention when he sings rock songs, his screams are insane. He also has the lowest range for tenors in Kpop, being able to project in the 2nd octave with ease. D.O most times looks bored, but he isn't. I think it is a remnant of when he had bad eyesight. Contact lenses felt uncomfortable for him and he wasn't allowed to wear his glasses, so I guess he stared at nothing. He recently got LASIK to correct his vision, but since he has done it for so many years, maybe it will take a while to break that habit. It’s so easy to say that the “better sounding” voice would be the one that sounds so effortless but I think being so into this concept takes away the emotions that singers put into their music. like sometimes you just have to read the lyrics to understand why they sang it that way. Sometimes singers put so much effort into notes to emphasize the message of that song or line and not really because that’s how they would hit those notes.

As a Chen bias myself I feel some people in the comments didn’t watch the entire video? Like they did praise him and even complimented on how easily he made it in some high notes. I feel like due to chen vocal range he’s often given the higher or more belty lines because he can do it with much more ease. That’s why you really don’t see his vocal range in a group setting as much as you do in his solo work. They never said they didn’t like his voice just that it looked strained so it was out of a place of concern if anything. Like if someone tries imitating chen they might do more harm to their voice than good. And this is only their second time watching them as a group. And it’s hard to get a totally grip on someone range and vocal tendencies especially when their in a group setting. I always enjoy chase and melia’s breakdown and can’t wait for them to see more exo, and it be awesome to see them check out Chen’s solo work too!

gray haired guy's name is baekhyun !! 11 years after his debut and he's still taking vocal lessons to this day. he also has a solo career and it's definitely one of the best ones I've seen in kpop

Actually no, Chen (the gentleman in the white outfit) is the loudest member. He's the one that best projects his voice and fills large spaces without the need of a microphone. You're right when you say it sounds very piercing, his voice is naturally that way. He himself has said that his voice is naturally high and loud so when he speaks he tries to lower his tone cause people around him tend to be surprised and also attracts a lot of attention. I think it's like what you say, he has a golden voice because out of all the EXO members he is actually the best singer with the most ease, technique and range. Although the difference is minimal, EXO is a group full of strong vocalists who are constantly practicing and developing their skills even after more than 10 years in the industry.

They focus on efficiency when singing, the way to sing good effortless. So for them Chen is trying harder than the others to keep control over his voice, that's why they thought that he has to put more effort to sound that good, is like he is not being free when singing even though he sounds great. We all know and is obvious for us (Exo-ls & Exo stans) that he has to control his vocals so he doesn't shine more than the rest of the guys cause they're a group, but for Chase and Malia is NOT obvious since this is their second time reacting to EXO, they are just giving their opinion as coaches from what they can perceive. I hope they keep watching and listening to the guys most frequently and they will realize for SURE that Chen is one of the greatest singer in the industry.
