When I was playing in my high school marching band in Los Angeles back in 1975. We played this song during half time. We blew everyone away with it and got a long standing ovation. Love this song.

This is definitely a forgotten oldie. The only time I ever heard this song was on WLS-AM. The ending is simply one of the best ever.

I can tell you it was huge in Pittsburgh in '71...both KQV and WIXZ played the $h!t out of it, and I never got tired of hearing it. During my junior and senior years in high school, it was a staple on our Jazz Band's "concert set list." The Pirates would play this during batting practice at Three Rivers Stadium, usually when it was either Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell or Bob Robertson taking their turn in the cage, and the song would blare over the PA system while they would belt ball after ball over the fence.

This and a few other Chase songs really sound the best with a good quality set of head phones. Rocking out with some of the best music during the late 60s and early 70, Chase had some phenomenal talent all around. August 9, 1974, was another day the music died.

I was in 6th grade, playing trombone after two years of lessons and three years of piano prior to that....and my music instructor asked me to join the high school stage band. Whaaaat? ME???!!! But I did it. :D All girl trombone section....maaaan: could we kick it!!! And LOUD!!!! HOLY SHIT....MY EARS ARE STILL RINGING!!! :D Coolest kids on earth back then...hippie era: and they all looked the part. Except me.....about a foot and a half shorter than any of them, and excruciatingly shy: but this was still the "Peace n' Love" era....and I was accepted: never made to feel "out of place". This was an exceptionally well written instrumental piece for the Jazz/Rock/Fusion bands of the seventies.....and we had an amazing trumpet section that gave you chills with this song....and one of those guys could absolutely SCREAM that horn. Gosh...…..seems like just yesterday...………………….. Thanks for these sounds.....and those memories!!! Peace n' Love, RED .

Yeah....I was a HUGE fan of "Chicago" (the early albums....before they went into that awful "pop" sound that engulfed them for way too long). James Pankow doesn't know it....but he and I were practicing trombones in my bedroom for YEARS!!! LOL I was short then: but I wasn't even close to high school age....only in 6th grade when they asked me to be in the stage/jazz band. In college I was not a "music major"....but I auditioned for college concert band, and got 2nd chair. Seven trombone players that WERE "music majors" hated me. Yeah: the "Peace n' Love" generation was fading out by the mid seventies. :-( Such a shame. We coulda' saved the world!!! Hey: sorry about that "recorder" thing. What a BUMMER!!! LOL

@@blondwiththewind This is such an awesome song. When I was in 11th and 12th grades our stage band played it, too. I was the 4th seat trombone, out of 4, but that was mainly because I didn't switch over to trombone until 10th grade. Still, I had 2 consolations...1) When the arrangement called for a bass trombone, I was the guy, and 2) In recognition for my hard work and effort to catch up with the "career" trombonists, I got to play the final cadenza from "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is" at our concerts and at the basketball games (our pep band played the song, too). Bill Chase was taken from us way too soon. What a set of chops. And, oh yeah, it broke my heart when Chicago went "wussy."

Have an ol' Hippie friend (Pacifica California boy....now in Denmark) who recalls his backstage manager days with Bill Graham at the original Fillmore/San Francisco in the mid-60s. Good natured guy...experienced an era of music never to be seen the likes of again....and he met 'em all: from when the artists were just starting to when they became widely known performers. Anyway: I've never heard much negativity from this guy....good sense of humor.....pretty tolerant....so it really surprised me the time he was mentioning the Hammond Organs from that time (as compared to the puny electric keyboards you hear now). Conversation included this comment: "Maaaan….yeah: I sure do remember those Hammonds! They sure did make a great sound...……………...but, maaaan': they were a SONOFABITCH to move around!!!! LOOOOL :D His "delivery" was sooo funny!!!

Bill Chase was a well-seasoned musician by the time he formed this band in 1971, having already performed with Maynard Ferguson, Stan Kenton and Woody Herman. Chase recorded three albums and was working on his fourth project, when his life was cut short due to a 1974 plane accident in Minnesota.

From 1971; Bill Chase managed to do this with just himself and eight others: singer and co-writer (with Chase) Terry Richards, Chase, Ted Piercefield, Alan Ware and Jerry VanBlair on trumpets, Angel South on guitar, Dennis Johnson on bass. Phil Porter on keyboards, and Jay Burrid on drums. None of their other singles got higher than 81. Damn near every high school band learned this (some still do), and even though it didn't chart in the UK (#24 here), it forced a title change: T Rex' Marc Bolan, who also died way too soon, had to re-title his song to "Bang a Gong (Get it On)" here because of the Chase record. Good with the Big 89 lead-in; this was one you REALLY wanted out of the news!

You forgot to mention that Bill Chase was a protege of the best Jazz/ Rock/ Blues/ Psychedelic trumpeter to ever wet a mouthpiece: Maynard Ferguson! Chase ends this "Get It On" piece with a signature artifact from Iron Butterfly's "Inna-gadda-da-vida", something that Maynard was known for: sprinkling snippets from "Pagliacci" throughout many of his pieces, in addition to the track so-named on his "Primal Scream" album.

Great old tune ! I was ten in '71 and I'd hear this on WINX out of Rockville, Maryland. Despite being a naive kid (even for that period) raised by ultra religious parents, I was able to pick up on its frenetic eroticism somehow. Chase seem to have been influenced by Blood, Sweat and Tears, another terrific band who featured kickass brass. Thanks for the great post !!!

Morning google+ Another nice production from MusicMike as only he does it. I Remember this track very well. These Columbia House releases were very well done and high quality at a time when K-tel and Ronco were releasing Various Artist LPs where the quality left alot to be desired with tracks often cut to fit 15 to 20 tracks a side.. Memorable track from this LP is Tymes "People" Also released on another Columbia House issue we have in our library. Have a great weekend everyone.

Another great presentation from Music Mike! Thanks, Mike! • Get It On by Chase went on to literally "get it on" by becoming a highly popular and widespread marching band half time performance tune. I remember well the days of hearing the vibes penetrate deep into the stadium where we on the football team could hear it. Our band would take the ending, which is reminiscent of In A Gadda Da Vida by Iron Butterfly, then segue into In A Gadda Da Vida with a great flourish from the brass section as well as the groovy beat of those wicked voodoo drums . . . some of us would be tapping out the beat on our knee pads or the wood benches. Uh-oh! Better pay attention to what the coach is yelling about . . . .

No. Chase a few members of his band were killed in a plane crash in 1974. Three years after the song. Chase got sued for quoting the song " In da gadda da vida" by iron butterfly.
