Same I paused the video there and studied the position because I couldn't understand why that wasn't checkmate. Eventually I decided it had to be checkmate and unpaused the video.

I hate how it sometimes happen during a real match too. It may seem like a mere delay of 1 second, but that single second is where I placed my hope in it being some lag and not that it's not a checkmate
@rraimundobrunoАй бұрын
The most surprising part of the challenge was the opponent not randomly moving the other knight just to mess with Simp's plans
@batlrarАй бұрын
I knew that knight was coming out the moment you moved yours and thus reminded the 100 rated player that it exists.

No, if the knight is taken it's now in the bottom left corner, in the captured material list

Great video and fun checkmate The casteling is a bit iffy. But honestly moving two pieces at once, one equidistant the other closer did reduce the total distance of all pieces to the knight
@smippycis6285Ай бұрын
I don't think castling is iffy because you castle by clicking on the king, and not the rook. By design then it is a King move not a rook one. Atleast by program lol
@idonnow2Ай бұрын
this is the canon interpretation
@Gitah92Ай бұрын
Castling is interesting. It should be a rare occurrence during this challenge. That this popped up during the only game simp would play with this restriction is a treat.
@mayebeline1149Ай бұрын
@@smippycis6285: It's not just "by program", it's by the FIDE rules of Chess. Castling is a King move.
@MrCheezeАй бұрын
Castling is officially a king move, and the king moved strictly closer, so we're good. I'd consider it valid even if the rook moved farther away.

Taking the active knight would mean you can't move next turn (unless he moved the other knight), because you can't move closer to a dead piece. Unless of course you count moving closer to the bottom-left, where taken pieces are displayed.

This was a really good one. I appreciate the knowledge of king movement here for a neat finish.

I would like to propose a new metric for measuring distance, that is the 'rings' around the target squares. i.e. the eight squares touching the target square are of distance one, the 16 ones touching those are distance two etc. I feel this is more intuitive imo, and also reflects the different ways of the pieces to move

I actually interpreted that as trying to find a move closest to the knight among all pieces and pawns, which means move 3 is limited to Ng4 or Ne4. And the next move would be to push the pawns on g or e file (unless the knight moved elsewhere or the other knight moved).
