I honestly don’t know how cold it actually was but my water bottle froze solid and my 5 degree sleeping bag with a liner and hand warmers in it wasn’t warm enough. My dog was shivering until I pulled her into the sleeping bag with me.

Would love to do -20c but have done -5c in Ireland. Trying to catch some morning surf on the west coast of Ireland. Blowing a 120km gale too. Wetsuits were frozen solid the next day. Great time though. Awesome video! Thanks for sharing

During my lengthy Navy career, I worked as a Survival Instructor in Maine and went through Cold Weather Medical Training and Winter Mountain Warfare Training in the High Sierras of NorCal (while serving with the Marines) and I've spent many, many nights in temps well below zero; and a bunch down in the area of -20℉ at altitudes of of 11,000 ft (+). Slept in 8 man tents with a wood stove, in improvised shelters (lean to's) and snow caves. I'm nearly 70 years old these days, and I can't handle those temps anymore, but I did have my fun and adventures. "Ol' Scooter" down in East Texas!

I know here in Michigan, one thing we learn about is how to use the mass amounts of water, woods, and other natural resources we have to our advantage if we ever need them. If we ever find ourselves in a situation of cold weather and we don't have thick enough clothing to survive the night, you tuck your shirt into your pants and start stuffing the inside of your shirt with tree leaves. They act as an awesome insulator and can save your life in an emergency. Same goes for the pant legs by tucking them into your shoes/socks if you can to keep the leaves in. I always carry some plastic bags too because wet feet in a cold weather climate, especially what you're showing in this video, can lead to severe issues. Can put the plastic bags around your feet and then wear your shoes to keep your feet and socks from taking any soakings or dampness. We have a massive hunter/outdoorsmen population in the state so these types of tricks are pretty common knowledge for the hunters/outdoorsmen. I'm pretty sure you know how to handle yourself being out there, but maybe these few tips might come in hand to you or another reader passing by.
@alexanderweaver48383 жыл бұрын
I'm not a young dude like you and I cannot tolerate sleeping in temperatures below freezing. Those days are long gone for me. My English neighbor and I would fish for pike in cold weather all night in the UK when stationed there twice in nine years. We slept under a tarp taking turns. We kept a small camp fire going but it was mostly a morale thing. I have a hobo camp in my wooded backyard where I test gear and slept in a hammock. The temperature did drop to 29F and I was fine with a zero degree bag I tested. Like you I sleep in the back of my Jeep SUV during the winter but in the warmer temps I use a tent cot, a OneTigris Bungalow or I'll cowboy style it (especially while stealth camping). Wow, that is some beautiful country you live in.

I love these videos man. I don't know why I get so much satisfaction out of watching someone else build a fire and camp. You're able to make people feel like they're the ones building the fire and making dinner on a jetboil. It's awesome. My one critique would just be to watch the volumes of the different clips. I know that can get complicated the more clips you have, but I felt like it was going from quiet relaxing music to loud and aggressive car tires on pavement or snowshoe crunches. Other than that I think what you're doing is awesome. Do you feel like having to video every step of your trip takes away from your own experience?
@ChaseChristopher13 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the support and feedback, Leif! I appreciate the input, I will certainly put more attention to that on the next one. Lots for me to learn! Videoing the process certainly changes the experience, yes. I find that my mind loves the challenge of the composition and setup planning so it offers a unique way for me to channel the creative side of my brain along side the adventurous side. Also, even with a different experience because of the ever-present camera I still am grateful that I get to have these experiences while learning and sharing in a financially supportive way.
