Grew up on Lummi Island. I remember one time when I was a young teenager - perhaps 12 or 13. This would have been in the very early 1980s. I was taking our 25' Bayliner to Bellingham from Lummi for a haulout at Squalicum Marina. I was flying north across Bellingham Bay when I was stopped by the USCG for a routine safety inspection. They were a little surprised to find the boat operated by me. But I passed inspection, and was allowed to continue on my way.

A good friend was boarded 5 times between Day Island and Pt Defiance fuel dock and literally strip searched by armed CG personnel. He said they took almost half an hour for each boarding and treated him like a criminal. This is in an 18 footer. A couple of the Coast Guard boats were only a quarter of a mile apart. When he told them that that boat over there just searched me, he was told that they dont care. WE are going to search your boat. When he got home, he put a for sale sign on his boat. He had been on the water his entire life, both father and grand father were tug captains.

Hi Jim, the separation zone separated northbound ship traffic from southbound in a channel. It considered a safety hazard to cruise down it. In the event of a breakdown you could get run over by a large ship. Best to cross straight though it and then cruise outside of it.

Once upon a time I was boarded by the USCG in small craft warning conditions. The poor guys found it difficult to board my boat, then equally as difficult to re-board their RIB. They first tried to board from upwind, that was a fail, so they did the smart thing and came at me from downwind. It was a training exercise for them, more than anything else. I was surprised that the safety inspection was done on a fancy electronic device that printed out a copy of my inspection.
@karlstreed3698 Жыл бұрын
I hope they gave you a safety inspection sticker. Sometimes if LEOS are doing safety checks they will ignore stickered boats since they know you are good to go and go after boats that have not been checked. It just saves being hassled.

A separation zone is meant for big ships. You want to stay clear in the event you have a breakdown. Ships have limited maneuverability so you could put yourself in danger if your cruising in the zone. Best to cross straight across and then stay clear of the zone.

Hi! Thanks for the comments! The separation zone is where the northbound traffic separates the southbound traffic. It's for large container ships, ferries, cruise ships etc. The Coast Guard doesn't want pleasure boats cruising straight down the zone, but instead cross straight across it quickly. If you had a breakdown while in this area you could get run over by a large ship. It's simply a safety issue.
