On a muzzleloader hunt in Minnesota, Sam Ubl is forced to call 911 from the deer stand moments after shooting a nice whitetail buck!
This hunt takes place with Sam Ubl and Steve Jeffrey from Chase Nation, hosted by Hunter Flanders and Veil Camo with Fin-and-Bone Outfitters in Southeast Minnesota. NO ONE PERSON OR ORGANIZATION IS RESPONSIBLE for the outcome of this hunt. What happened in the woods that day was coincidental and a result of the muzzle blast causing severe benign vertigo. The resulting hypothermia in addition to the vertigo was caused from a combination of being in frigid temperatures all day, moisture caused from sweat earlier in the day and stumbling into a creek while attempting to walk out while nearly unconscious and dizzy.

Heard the full story on the Working Class Bowhunter podcast. He definitely goes into great detail and you can hear the emotion in the story from being this close to losing his life. He made a point to say kiss your babies and your family, tell them you love them, because just because something hasn't happened before, doesn't mean it wont happen next time. Be safe, and have a plan folks. Glad you are ok Sam!

Wow! What a scary situation, Sam! I suffer from vertigo...typically escalates during colder weather so I have to do exercises before bedtime to keep it in check. Just another reason to always have my cellphone on me in the woods, and always harness in the treestand. Great capture of your experience, as always. Hope you are feeling much better now Sam!!

Vertigo is no joke. Best way I can describe it, it's like riding on a roller-coaster while black out drunk but you're conscious for all of it. Oh and you can't get off. Congrats on a beautiful buck.

That’s a scary situation. For Sam the doctor recommended he not climb trees anymore. Hunting from the ground is his preferred method, but it’s going to be awfully hard to stop him from climbing trees in the future. Lifelines and safety harness equipment are a definite must.

This is so ironic! I am 70 years old and just this past season, while hunting in SE Minnesota I shot a large doe during the ML season. Hunting alone, and .5 miles to drag her across the top and then .2 miles downhill. Things seemed OK but when I got home at 5:30 PM I was not feeling good. 20 minutes later I think I am dying; throwing up every 30 minutes (except they were all major dry heaves!). This went on till 7:00 AM the next morning! My wife had to call for an ambulance because I was so dizzy that I could not even open my eyes or I would fall down! Straight to the ER. After major testing, it was not a stroke (as I had thought that it was) but my first bout with vertigo. After 5 sessions with the PT Tech at Winona Health (that girl was great!) I am back to 100%. Never had vertigo before and I never want it again. Lessons learned? I ALWAYS send my position to my sons via ONX as well as communications before I get there. When I am there. And when I am home!

Wow! Just wow. The amount of stories that have been coming in with relatively similar experiences is overwhelming. While recording this story on the Working Class Bowhunting Podcast we talked about what the odds are of this happening; does this happen more often than most might realize? I think the answer is yes, absolutely - we tend to keep our heads turned to negative thoughts until it happens to affect us directly. Thank you for watching and leaving us a comment with your story, we sincerely appreciate you.
