All these people saying "take it to a shop" are missing the whole point of the video series. It's a learning experience. Not just for Chase, but for anyone watching who doesn't know their way around a motorcycle. Does he make mistakes? Yes, but so does everyone else who tries something they haven't done before. No one is perfect.

@chaseontwowheels Maybe I'm beating a dead horse, maybe I'm not. Some advise on torque wrenches; put them back on 0 when you're done with them. If you leave them at a certain torque, the internal springs will fatigue and they will go out of calibration.

Hi Chase! I just want to put in my two cents here. I loved this video. It was one of my favorites. I'm glad to see that you don't let all the negative comments get you down and that you're able to keep an upbeat spirit. I'm not sure why people expect you to have perfect knowledge about motorcycle mechanics. You've obviously spent your time learning about other things (e.g. cameras) and now you're learning about tools and what have you. Anyways, keep up the good work. I'm excited to see the finished product!

Actually chase when a gas tank is empty is the most dangerous time to work on it. The gas is flammable but the fumes are exponentially more explosive as there is air now mixed with it. just a FYI.

Haven't seen it posted but you need to fully lay out those gas soaked rags till they're dry. DO NOT leave them crumpled up or throw them in the trash. Gas soaked rags and towels will ignite (e.g. spontaneously combust) if bunched up like that. Easy way to burn down your house.

If you're not learning, you're not working. The fact that you're learning, makes this worth watching. You said something about all the problems you've been having with this bike. It's not the bike, it was your inexperience. Now that you've made mistakes, and learned from them, this second bike will be easier.

Hey Chase - an easy way to syphen fuel without sucking or using a special tool is to place your syphen hose into the tank, then hold your hand over the tank opening to make a seal, and use a straw or a small piece of hose to blow air into the tank. Basically the tank pressurizes, and pushes fuel out of the syphen hose, starting the syphen without risking a mouth full of gas :)

Haters going to hate. I'm just happy I'm not the only one that has those types of struggles every once in a while. I appreciate the videos and tear down the bike and build it up. I do question 1100 bucks for a tank. The cost versus benefit is almost nothing to be able to bolt it down. Probably spent the money on something better
@pmann8921
@pmann8921 8 жыл бұрын
Chase, sometimes, if the bolt is not bottomed out and the threads are clean you can just unscrew the broken pice. Like you took out the section bolt. Only using a pic or even the old broken pice. By sticking the head back in the hole and using a socket on your drill and setting it in reverse or counter clockwise. It will catch and unscrew. Some times using a drill bit and easy out aren't the easiest ways. If you ever have to drill something like this bolt out... always try a left handed drill bit first!. Love the videos.

for any spills in my garage, I keep a box of kitty litter in the corner. Absorbs all gas or oil off the floor and depending on what kind you buy it dulls out or disperse the smell pretty good. the kind of flooring you have isn't the best for a garage environment either, it'll eventually absorb the fluids.

He ordered the tank because the other one had an issue with the bolt not working. He asked about it, and MM informed him of a DEFECT in the US version. So he ordered a European tank. European parts take weeks to ship the US, IF they're even available here. Meaning he had planned on replacing this tank after its initial issue a few weeks ago. Meaning. He drilled into it because it was getting tossed anyway and wanted to see what would happen. And it got a reaction out of you lol. Look a little deeper into things. Chase isn't the most proficient with tools, we've all established that. But he didn't dump a grand on a tank because he made a mistake, he got the tank because it needed to be replaced anyway.

@chaseontwowheels a little helpful tip for gas/oil spills: cat litter. Lay down about an inch or two thick layer of cat litter and let it sit for a minute. Then before cleaning it up step on it a few times. I know it sounds bizarre but it absorbs it all and keeps the floors clean. Hope this helps!

As for the fuel pump craziness, it's not too complicated: The main metal can is the fuel pump itself, the little baggie at the bottom is the fuel sock that keeps large (relatively speaking) bits of debris out of the pump, the clear can near the top in the loopy bit of hose-tentacle is the fuel filter that keeps tiny bits of debris out of the rest of the fuel system. There will also be a fuel sender in there somewhere that reports the fuel level to either the gas gauge or the low fuel light (depending what your bike has). You could have used the opportunity of having the fuel pump out to change out the filter and sock, but chances are they were fine so it's no big loss.

While most of this series is a trainwreck and using a swiffer to clean gas isn't the smartest move, he's actually using the swiffer correctly (or a feature of the swiffer correctly). Theres a scrub pad on the top, you flip it over, scrub and then use the swiffer like you normally would. You can see the scrub pad at 22:38

Best lesson in torque wrenches, ALWAYS pay attention to FOOT pounds or INCH pounds. Don't even bother with the smaller torque wrench... You're not putting enough force behind it for it to really matter, just tighten it until it feels tight enough. Chase do you have the service manual for this bike?

i know that, but it really bugs me to see lots of money wasted on buying parts you can easily fix. Furthermore, 30 minutes of bike build video consisting only on taking the gas tank off? I dont know if people in the comments are blind or what but that is not something really awesome man

Olav Amh because 99% of these mistakes could be avoided with a 20 second Google search. The fact that the gas tank "might" have a problem doesn't excuse drilling a hole in it and spending $1200 on a new one. He's wasting the money that his supporters are trusting him with, which is disrespectful to them.

If you spill gas cover it with sand to soak it up, then you just sweep it up and use a deodoriser of your choice. Bam no gas no hazard no smell

A gas tank like that will be roto-cast. What happens is you have a mould that's the negative shape of the outside of the tank, and you'll place some brass threaded inserts on the inside surface of the mould in various places where you want to bolt things down, then you pour in a bucket full of powdered thermoplastic. The mould is mounted to an arm that spins and rotates it every which way (thus roto-casting) and it's heated in an oven while it's being rotated around, melting the plastic powder in a relatively even layer to the inside of the mould. The mould is then cooled and the plastic part, with the brass inserts fused in place, is removed. So yeah, the entire inside will be hollow. No solid parts. As you discovered. But hey, learning is fun!

I was not a subscriber so wasn't aware of this series but I was alerted elsewhere about it and how you were getting a lot of shit for messing up and not doing things the proper way. Haters are always going to hate and I say screw all that noise man and just keep at it and keep learning. Anyone can bitch in the comments but unless they have done the same and have a proof of it, they can piss off. Filming and doing this work is incredibly hard. Having done a large one myself, I can attest it is so easy to forget something. Showing any mistakes that you made and any obstacles you came across along the way is the right way to do it. People should be a lot more appreciative of the process you are sharing with everyone. Keep at it. Now I need to watch the rest of them :)

Only thing I can remember to grab spills was sand or cat litter. I don't know if it gets rid of the smell per say but it will soak up the liquid and then you can sweep it up and throw it out. I personally don't do this method normally, I just accept what I dropped and suffer through it.

Idk if someone has already mentioned it or not, but it looks like there were little extra parts bags in the same bag as the tank. They were on the camera side in similar bags that the rubber grommet came in.
