If you rent a concrete grinder it will make your floor smooth and a good application surface for any coating and epoxy. I did it with mine and it took 3 day from when I started grinding to the rock solid ready for a car to drive on. It works great.

Great video - I'll be referring coatings contractors to this video so they see how to correctly prep a floor. So many people skip the prep stage on any type coatings install whether a concrete pad or for a commercial roof coating. Then the result is blisters and delamination. I just forwrded a link to your video to GAF's marketing department.

In the UK you can hire one of those floor grinders for £181 plus 20%VAT per day, they are 110v so you need to hire a transformer and then buy the diamond grinding pads, you would be close to £300 for a days use. Sucks to be British. :-)

Found this product called “Rust-Oleum Rock Solid Universal Concrete Bonding Primer” in Australian market, it claims could used on previously coated surfaces without sanding/grinding. Looks like a life saver for your prep work....
@ConcreteFloorSolutions4 жыл бұрын
I know you followed the manufacturers recommendations for preparation, and you did a great job at following directions. Unfortunately, what the manufacturer doesn’t tell you is that if the concrete is not scratched by a diamond or if there is any residual paint on the floor, you are doomed for failure. Concrete surfaces require some type of profile for the epoxy to bond to, either a scratched or shotblasted surface. I would love some feedback in the future to see how long the floor lasts before it starts peeling. DIY epoxy manufactures should recommend the proper preparation. There is moisture in all concrete and heat rises creating vapors that travel upward gently pushing against the underside of the coatings until it fails (if it wasn’t prepared properly). I am trying to educate the public. I have created a career based on replacing these types of floors on a daily basis.

I see the failures all the time. Customers ask me to clean their garage floor and I just cringe. The finish comes off so easy. The pro jobs are easy to spot and a pleasure to clean.

Kinda late now, but if you find yourself using the scraper again - turn it over to the other side every so often and it “self sharpens” the blade so it lasts longer.

If you ever do another garage, I'm not sure if you did it with this one, You should really do a primer coat(white,grays,or black depending on the top coat) before the epoxy coat.

LOL - I'm doing a Rock Solid floor in my Machine and motorcycle shop right now- (975 sq ft floor) Building was built in 1981, had 4 different colors of previous floor coating? paint? epoxy? IDK? over it- I rented a floor GRINDER, got the bulk of it in 2 days, then from Home Depot, rented the Diamabrush and used it for 11.5 hrs strait. But now I have BARE FRESH STRIPPED white concrete floors....... Currently in the patch and crack filling stage, I'm using the RustOleum 2-part epoxy crack filler- How is your floor holding up now that it's going on 4 months old? Thanks!
@Jetfuture7374 жыл бұрын
Would have save a LOT of effort by going with a diamond tip concrete floor grinder to pull up the old paint/epoxy/sealer/whatever. Not only will it have made the job MUCH easier (how much for all of those jugs of Rust-Oleum paint remover?!), it would have also made the floor much smoother and made the Rocksolid look much better. Keep in mind that if you are removing paint/epoxy/sealer, you will want a dry grinder with a vacuum. These run about $275 per 24-hour rental near me (price includes the machine, the diamond disc, and the vacuum). If someone is NOT needing to remove paint/epoxy/sealer, then you can go with a wet grinder, which will be a lot cheaper because of the lack of a vacuum requirement. People say the key is in the prep, and that first step should always be the concrete grinder. Trust me, you will notice cracks and imperfections in the concrete after applying the Rocksolid if you don't grind the concrete first. No matter how good the bare concrete looks.

Hello Kevin, I did my floor 15 years ago with the Rust. Epoxy - going to redo it with the RockSolid product. I am going to rent the Diamond Grinder you mentioned. Do I need to use the Rustoleum Primer after I sand the floor prior to starting the Rock Solid product? Thanks for your insight.
@Jetfuture7373 жыл бұрын
@@deniseschenone2530 First of all, Denise, I am not a professional floor installer and just a DIY guy with this. So verify everything with Rustoleum or a real pro! But when I called Rustoleum and asked about priming, they said it was not necessary as long as the concrete was prepared properly with grinding and/or the chemical etcher. Personally, I would always do both. One thing I WOULD make sure to do is to have more product than what you think you need. You can always return unused boxes. This goes for rollers too! My garage turned out really nice in the end. I gave advice to a friend and he decided to do his 6-year-old garage floor, which was bare concrete. He cleaned it thoroughly with soap and degreaser where necessary. He then used etcher. And he bought an extra box of Rocksolid. However, he had a spot in the middle that didn't cure correctly. He now makes sure that I know that it doesn't look good and he isn't happy (and sort of blames me for convincing him "he can do it"). So, buyer beware! In nearly every case, a DIY job will not look as good. I am very particular, but I am fairly pleased with my job. But it took a LOT of effort to do it. I had the time because I wasn't working most of last year (2020). I would likely never do it again. I would just save the extra $3,000 it would have cost to hire a professional team. But, I am pretty satisfied with how mine turned out. The clearcoat is also a must in my opinion. Good luck!
