Engineer here; electric sucks for anything substantial and is only taken seriously by politicians, hipsters and hippies. All of whom learned everything they know about energy from common core public schools and/or Hollywood movies. The future is nuclear and hydrogen.

Rance Khan Sorry engineer but no hydrogen or nuclear motorcycles anytime soon. Yes there are hydrogen cars but the methods of harvesting that hydrogen completely negate any environmental impact it would have due to fracking. I mean, I'm all down for solar and wind energy, hell, even gimme some wave energy so we can use the gravitational pull of the moon but good luck to you tryna power anything in your home when it's a cloudy day with no wind. @KJSvitko

@@tatzecom Battery storage makes wind and solar 24/7 base load power and peaker power. That is a game changer. Nuclear energy is the most expensive option and when you add in nuclear waste disposal costs it is astronomical. Check into the costs of clean up the nuclear accident at Fukishima or Chernobyl. The cost of the destruction to the environment is huge. Don't believe the Nuclear industry propaganda.
@tatzecom
@tatzecom 5 жыл бұрын
@@KJSvitko batteries too don't just fall out of the sky and need to be build, the resources for that too must be mined Nuclear waste is the biggest problem, that's true, since we don't have a permanent final solution for it. But I'd rather have that problem and real with it later instead of having to rely on coal and gas power and having an inhabitable planet in 50 years. Being able to fully use wind and solar energy is good and I hope we can have that asap, but right now? Nuclear surely is the better option. Otherwise you wouldn't have nuclear waste but you also wouldn't have a planet to live on anymore. Pick your poison. Cost of clean up of a nuclear desaster? Mate, were talking normal operation here. I mean, what would be the cost if a large number of batteries suddenly exploded? Damn big, that's right. Yes, nuclear desaster a shouldn't happen but you know, as it's always with accidents, they are unplanned and shouldn't be considered. And even if they are considered, the pros far outweigh the cons of nuclear power. On a final note, don't accuse me of blindly following some propaganda. I like to make my own picture and stand behind my choices. I mean, I don't accuse you of shilling for the wind+power industry, do I?

As an EV owner of many years let me say that range anxiety isn’t a thing. The vast majority of drives are so far below my range I honestly don’t think about it. On those not infrequent occasions where work or my personal life takes me on a longer journey yeah, I’ll charge (at home) to 100% (I normally only charge to 72%) and have to spend a few minutes considering my route to account for charging needs, which isn’t a big deal. I get that motorcycles are about the freedom to ride, but really how many rides are completely unplanned? One of the great things I’ve seen over the last few years is the number of cool places that have figured out EV chargers bring business... crazy weird fun places like petting zoos (seriously I thought it was just a charger and diner but *bewm,* petting zoo!!), reptile farms, museums etc. So not only are there *_way_* more chargers, they bring you to fun places :) Oh, and btw, that listed charging time can be cut in half... it takes just as long to charge an EV battery pack from 0-80% as it does from 80-100% regardless of the speed of the charger or battery chemistry so you only charge to 80% unless needs must (which they really never do). Besides, it isn’t as if we’ve never seen a car or motorcycle sitting on the side of the road because they ran out of gas... it’s not the end of the world.

Motorcycles and cars are used differently. I wouldn't really mind an electric car because it would be primarily used to get to work and home. For me and many other riders a long Saturday ride can be 2 fill ups and planing a route based on electric charging stations isnt something I want to do. I like to get lost and discover new roads outside the city. So I don't like the idea of an electric motorcycle just yet. We'll see what the next few years bring.

As an EV owner I can tell you range anxiety absolutely can be a thing. My commute is between 30-55 miles depending on where I'm working. Most of the time, my commute is my commute, and I'm not really worried about it. I know my car can make it to work and back, I know my zero can make it to work and back. But occasionally I have to go out of my way and do a couple more errands. I've made it home on my Zero with 1% battery. It's not fun, it's really anxiety inducing, and it's a real thing. If I didn't have the power tank the range on the Zero wouldn't be adequate for me.

YOU NEED TO TEST RIDE ONE! I’m 64yrs old, peddled a ‘85 VMax for 20yrs, & a ‘05 Triumph Speed Triple for the past 14yrs. Dead quiet, no vibrations allows you to enjoy riding even more. Zero dealers have all 4 models available to road test. I took the SR/F out for a 15 min ride, & didn’t want to return it. 60-100mph was quick but I’ve been on faster bikes. But from a dead stop it’ll out accelerate practically any IC engined bike, once they need to start shifting & falling behind you. Showa suspension, the brakes are J.Juan which is part of it’s all Bosch operating system, & performed excellently, great feel/power, rear brake was typical of all bikes, nothing great. Engine braking s mild, engine heat/noise is nonexistent, which in FL is a major summertime riding drawback.. It’ll top out at 125mph, but I need a bike capable of 150 to feel fully satisfied.The future of motorcycling is gonna spoil us,,,it’s about time👍.

Agree about the two issues. SR/F might stand for Sitting Recharging /Fail. eBikes will remain toys until battery price drops to half and capacity doubles. Maybe in the interim they should consider a hybrid with a little constant RPM gas generator, at least make that an option and design the frame to have space for it, then those that don't want it can use the space for more storage.

Zeros are GREAT bikes for daily commute (drive to work, and back, charge at home overnight. Then take it somewhere for a ride at night (where you won't piss off you neighbors blasting around), or on the weekends where you can have lunch or dinner while you fast charge. The charge tank I think is a MUST!. For most commutes, chagrin in 4 to 5 hours works fine. Being able to recharge in under 2 hours, lets you go somewhere, shop, get some food, walk a bit, and drive back home. Also, if you blast around range is not so good, but cruising at 45- to 55 mph you can get a lot of range (font' recommend for a road trip, though it is do-able with planning) but if you live in a busy city, like Los Angeles, again, great commuting option. Having said that, if you hav never risen one, Got to a dealer and try it! Is a Blast and somethign everyone should try! (whether you care for electric motorcycles or note)

@@the.communist : Performance sells sport bikes, and ease of use / lack of maintenance. Range anxiety / charge times are all holding back EV deployment. TIf you have environmental transport concerns, your only way to redemption is to walk everywhere, or keep your old car/bike for another 2 decades - embedded CO2, etc, due to manufacture of a new vehicle will nearly never be offset meaningfully. Prices will become realistic at the same tiime as ... wait .. never (relatively), because straight petrol vehicles will get "banned" and the EV rideshare model will give EV manufacturers any incentive on competing with "dino-burners" (jk). Don't get me wrong, not a hater at all, I would love to chuck an EV (20-30kWh, unfortunately a battery of that size will cost in the order of $15-$25k -AUD, motor, torque splitter and power electronics are the cheap part) hybrid powertrain in my current truck to allow low cost / free local travel - using home solar power, replacing petrol consumption is a better proposition than getting a low Feed-In-Tariff..

Way way above anything that I expected especially, after first trying the mid range model which was quite disappointing. While I was waiting at the traffic light, an old guy rolled down the window of his truck and told me how he liked the bike. I wouldn't spend $22k for base trim on the road but, it is really nice for those who are willing for such sacrifice. What I don't understand is claims about longevity. There are many parts there that can fail and replacing any of them would be extremely expensive. My laundry machine lasted almost 15 years but, the electric motor eventually died.

I think it's cool, idk if I'd ever own one though. Personally I like the whole motorcycle experience of being raw to the elements, manually shifting, having an engine screaming right under you. Taking out so much of that would get rid of some of the enjoyment and rawness of the motorcycle I think.
@sunpwrd
@sunpwrd 5 жыл бұрын
I understand why you like the noise since you grew up with it, and for generations, car and bike people associated noise with power. Also shifting is something all bikers get used to, but in reality, a transmission is a heavy, maintenance liability that is only needed because ICE bikes and cars have crappy torque at low RPM. Once you experience a bike that has lots of power and torque without any noise, and no need for a transmission, you will change your mind. Try it, you'll like it.

Just say _”regen”_ when talking about regenerative braking... s’what all us EV owners say as people ask about it *_all_* the time. I still think Zero missed a trick by not including a way to increase or decrease the regen level (like the flappy paddles in many EVs)... a clutch pedal or grip would have worked.
@sunpwrd
@sunpwrd 5 жыл бұрын
I had a Vectrix about ten years ago. They patented a regen in the throttle that was awesome. When you let off accelerating, the throttle springs back to the zero position, but you could then reverse the throttle and it increased regen the more you reversed it. I hardly ever needed the brakes. I tried to get Zero to incorporate this, but so far, they haven't. Might be a problem with the patent.

Paul Scott - that’s pretty cool... any type of position encoder attached to a lever or rotating shaft could do it outside of the throttle grip would work without running afoul of that patent. I figured a clutch pedal would be good as it already serves a largely similar function (engine braking) and riders know how to use it...

The performance and stability seem to be on point. This jumps way ahead of all those new electrics announced recently like the Harley Livewire, which were hoping to be the Zero killer. Now they have a new bar to jump over and it's not gonna be easy. This bike can do it all, except maybe long distance touring. I agree with the name thing. I like bikes with names: "Panigale", "Brutale", "Katana", "Ninja", "Hayabusa", "Rocket", "California", "Daytona", "Rune" "Speed Triple", are all badass names and we all know what emotions and feelings those names evoke.
