Jazz Lives through your contribution to the legacy of this American treasure. So many of our musical greats have passed on, but their genius of music will never die.

Mine is a small part, but I'm happy to play it. Thanks for your sentiment!

What's sad is the music that black culture creates now and kids follow is crap. Bird and them wouldn't believe it. Sad!

Rather than lament what might have been… I appreciate what Bird did manage to contribute/record and am grateful that the Savoy, Dial and Verve labels did record enough of Bird that we can all get a good idea of what he was aiming at/for in his music. (Not to forget Debut’s recording of the 1953 Massey Hall concert.) Bird himself reportedly said that Just Friends has his favorite solo. I can see why - it really sounds beautiful to me.

While we will never know what Bird would have done had he lived longer, one can't say that his work was unfinished or incomplete. He wrote the book on bebop and closed it. And in so doing, he ushered in pretty much all of jazz to follow.

The hits and trills by the trumpet section of the brass section of the Jay McShan band are killing! Jay McShan worked them and it shows!

Agreed--tight and cohesive section playing.

That track Swingmatism has some phrases in that turn up in Goodman/Sauter's Clarinet A La King. As well as the overall feel. Never heard that track before, I'm guessing Sauter did!

Sort of Unrelated. But Chase. How useful do you think the Charlie Parker omnibook is to someone looking to absorb bebop language into their own playing?
@chasesanborn Жыл бұрын
It's most useful if you first try to transcribe the solos yourself, and then check your work. Bird may not be the first choice for someone just starting to transcribe, but but music has to be ingested by ear, not by eye. See my videos on solo transcription in the Jazz Tactics playlist. kzbin.info/aero/PLdkYbUyqvkhSJJ4IJFoNYBtNaxiMZgNlg

I heard it was a nightmare being in Charlie Parker's band because it was like pulling teeth getting him to pay you your money. He wanted to spend as much as possible on heroin due to his habit. On the other hand, being able to witness him play first hand must have been worth all the headache. He's one of the most indispensable figures in music of the 20th century. He changed the way everyone else played no matter what instrument they were on.

He actually kicked heroin several times but always relapsed with a year. When his daughter died it pretty much destroyed him and he was dead a year later

One assumes that recurring addiction would leave one vulnerable to cruel twists of life. Tragic all around.
