I think it's a pretty impressive result for the Venu 2 Plus given how much cheaper it is than the Epix Gen 2. They are intended for different types of customers of course, but it's great to see Garmin putting some of its best technology and features into a smartwatch style body that is clearly intended to be competing more with the Apple Watch than with rugged fitness watches for serious endurance athletes.

Great review. I've been using the Venu 2 Plus for a couple of years and have heard others raved about the Epix so I thought about "switching up". However, I am only a casual runner that does a daily run for about an hour and the occasional hike so I don't need the more sophisticated features of the Epix. The V2P has been a great watch for me and I will cherish it, for now at least 🙂

I have Fenix 7X Solar Sapphire and recently got a Venu 2 (on sale) for daily use. The Fenix 7X is just too big and heavy for daily use. The Venu is perfect and has the basic activities I need although metrics are trimmed down. I plan to keep using my Venu 2 for daily use and for travel. Its much lighter and if something happens to it I won't be as upset as if something happened to my Fenix 7. I use my Fenix 7 for outdoor activities and exercising because it tracks a lot more metrics and has mapping. I would recommend the Venu 2 for anyone who doesn't need performance metrics beyond the basics, doesn't need mapping and wants to save some money. My Venu 2 records all my vitals, sleep score factors and has built in spotify which I use often. It has messaging, the battery lasts 11-12 days, has AMOLED screen, and is much lighter and comfortable for daily use. Doesn't get much better than that for a daily watch. The best part is that all my vitals and performance metrics are updated in the Garmin app seamlessly.

I've never had a smartwatch before and I'm finally getting more in to fitness. I was looking at the Venu more since it's great for basic health tracking. However, I am hiking a lot more and having a map on my wrist is a HUGE benefit. A few weeks ago I was on a hike and had to keep pulling out my phone to make sure I was on the right trail because there were multiple trails all close to each other, I even almost missed my turn because of this. Having that right there on my wrist is a huge plus. My buddy has a Fenix 5 with the sapphire glass, he smashed it against a rock while white water rafting. The bezel was scratched to hell but the glass was completely fine. EDIT: Also the Epix has a great golf tracker and that's a huge selling point

Great review I'm thankful for it. Despite these two watches being in different leagues, I'm glad you compared them because these are the two I'm deciding between. It's a hard choice. The V2+ would probably fit most of my needs, but having maps would be great for mountain biking and I am a person that is likely to scratch up watches pretty badly, so that Sapphire quality would definitely beat out a thin bezel Gorilla Glass 3. But I could buy two V2+'s for the price of the Epix... Hard choice.
@speedlever2 жыл бұрын
It is a hard choice. I’m considering moving to one of these from my old but still very functional and great battery life Vivoactive hr. The transflective display is great in sunlight and battery life but difficult to see when ambient light is poor. I still want great battery life and durability, so I lean to the epix. But I like the smart watch features the V2+ offers which the Epix does not. And I really value the sapphire crystal. Maybe I need to wait on the Epix 3. The V2+ just doesn’t strike me as very rugged. I’ve dialed back my road biking after an accident last year so I mostly play tennis, ride my Peloton, and do some walking these days. I suspect the V2+ would serve me well but I really want that sapphire crystal. Hmm.

BLUF: I ordered the EPIX 2. I’m training for a 70.3 Ironman and Spartan Beast. For me, that means 5+ hour events that my Apple Watch just can’t handle. Not to mention, the EPIX 2 has far more metrics and serious training features. I’m happy with my decision and excited to receive the EPIX 2. However, at more than twice the price of the Venue and Apple Watch, I can’t believe it doesn’t have a cellular option at all. Never mind a cellular option that would allow me to take calls without a phone. When I bought my Apple Watch I wondered if I would really use the cellular capability without the phone near by and I have to say it has been a life saver on more than one occasion. On one of my long runs last year, I experienced an injury and had to call my wife. I was very glad to have that option with my Series 6 Apple Watch. I also enjoy streaming music over the cellular connection while running without the need to take my phone.

I have a Fenix 6 Pro (titanium) that I was considering replacing with the Epix 2. I have small wrists and always thought that the Fenix was a bit ungainly, and the display was never up to spec (maybe downright ugly) considering the price point. For someone looking to buy a new watch and has money to spend, the Epix 2 would be great. I didn't purchase it, though. Instead, I opted to keep the Fenix 6 and use it for training while buying the Venu 2+ for daily use and things like golf (even though the Fenix supports this). I have to say, the Venu 2 is so much nicer to use on a daily basis than the Fenix. It looks better, the screen is gorgeous, you could wear it with a suit, and it has a good chunk of the functionality of the Fenix. That said, the Fenix blows it out of the water for training and sports usage. What Garmin really needs to do is start with the Venu 2+ form factor, add the training functionality of the Forerunner 745 while keeping all of the "other" sports profiles of the Venu 2+. This would be an absolutely killer device for someone who wants something that looks nice but also has high-end training features.

Dave, any difference in brightness or reflections of the amoled screen between the Venu and Epix? Trying to decide between Epix and Epix Sapphire and interested to know if the sapphire screen is noticeably darker and has more reflections as is the case with Fenix 6 gorilla glass vs sapphire screen.
@ChaseTheSummit2 жыл бұрын
There's a very slight difference between gorilla glass and Sapphire. If you look closely in some of the B-Roll shots in this video you'll see a very slight haze to the Epix display due to the sapphire. That said, it's minimal and I'd take that slight haze for the extreme scratch resistance of the Epix Sapphire. I have another video coming later this week comparing non-sapphire to sapphire Epix / Fenix 7 models. Stay tuned!

Garmin supports their watches indefinitely. As long as it works it will pair with Garmin Connect. As an example I have a 10 year old Garmin Fenix (original version) that still works and can still upload activities to Garmin Connect and Strava. That said, over time the lithium batteries in these watches do degrade so it’s unlikely you’ll see the same performance 5-10 years down the road. I’m also curious to see the longevity of these new AMOLED displays since it’s such new tech. Nice video, Dave. Multi GPS is only on the sapphire version of Epix, I believe. Another minor point: county club types should note that the Epix has tennis, but Venu 2 Plus does not 🤓

Yep, you’re correct. The regular Epix does have Multi GNSS though which is still an upgrade over the Fenix 6 it just can’t use dual frequencies simultaneously. It’s funny that they leave sports like Tennis out of certain watches. I wonder why? Does the activity profile provide any specific data to tennis or is it just a clone of the “Cardio” profile?

How is the voice assistant on the venu 2. Does what you ask on it show up on the watch and tell you the answer? I have the fenix 6x, but thinking about adding the venu 2 for the voice assistant. Keep up the great work!
@ChaseTheSummit2 жыл бұрын
It's just as good as talking directly to your phone. The watch itself isn't doing any of the brains of the operation. It's simply a microphone that will transmit your voice data to the phone to be deciphered. If you have problems with Google / Siri you'll still have problems with the Venu 2 Plus.

For the price point Epix should really be the "EVERYTHING" watch with the voice / phone features as well as LTE option. I guess that's what Epix 3 is for 🙄 but it does beg the question: are we looking at Fenix 6 -> 7 release schedule or Venu 2 -> 2+ schedule for next Epix models
@AlfuhPAD2 жыл бұрын
contd - I would assume we are looking at a shorter model refresh timeline with incremental improvements built in (a la Venu 2 -> 2+), but imo that does make a pretty bad overall experience when it comes to an item that is so expensive. Paying $1k for a watch and then having a newer version out in less than a year will start to put people off of Garmin
@ChaseTheSummit2 жыл бұрын
I kind of agree. I was hoping they'd really push the limits considering the "EPIX" name and throw everything at it. But... It's really just a fenix with a nice display. Maybe we'll see a "plus" variant down the road.
@AlfuhPAD2 жыл бұрын
@Chase the Summit Another point to consider is that ALL the marketing material for this watch says their target demographic is not the Fenix owner who wants a nice display, but rather high end smartwatch users who want to take their fitness more seriously. I have a Fenix 6 saphire That ive smashed (hard) and scrapped against just about every harsh surface you can think off. not only has the glass never broken, theres not even a scratch or even a light buff on any of the glass and barely any on the bezel, nothing that you can se without REALLY looking... thats the MAIN difference between the Ti/saphire glass epix and the plastic Venu. the epix looks like a real watch...much like a bulky Rolex also takes up space, while the venu looks like a toy. not that it matters when it comes down to function over form. fiddling with a touchscreen mid run, ride, fast hike is less than ideal ( as any apple watch wearer will tell you)...the buttons are a most in that situation. nevermind if its raining or slightly moist out. about the scrolling on the widgets, I saw other reviews that showed it scrolling on the epix/f7, I think its a setting thing?
@ChaseTheSummit2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. Yes the widgets are scrollable on both the Venu 2 and Epix. the difference is that you can also use the buttons on the epix which is nice while wearing gloves or in harsh environments.

Personally if you’re already looking at something this expensive I’d spring for the Sapphire. The glass is SOOOO much more durable and you get more storage, and multi-band GPS on top of that. BUT, if you’re dead set on getting the base model there’s nothing wrong with that either.

Hi, what do U think about active calories measuring accuracy on Garmin watches? I tested Tactix Delta against Samsung Galaxy 4 during stationary indoor bike ride. GW4 was much stricter to my surprise. Does stricter mean more accurate?
@ChaseTheSummit2 жыл бұрын
It depends what they're measuring and whether or not they're including your Basal Metabolic Rate in the calculation. From what I've tested all of the brands seem to be all over the place on this and rarely do I find two that align. Garmin tends to be consistent between it's own devices but not comparable to others.
