The thing is that just when I was about to buy a garmin, and I was ready for the 265, the Venu 3 came out, so I went for it. I don't need the speaker, neither do I need the assistant -- it's dumb to call for your phone if it's in your pocket anyways, and a couple weeks later, the VA5 came out ! I can only say it's a good business planifacation from Garmin. Now, I don't regret my Venu 3, it looks awesome, and I prefer it over the VA5, which I saw in store and looks rather cheap. But minus 150$ cheap ? I don't know... Watches are somewhat personal items because they stick to your skin and your style, so they've always been priced according to that as well. At the end of the day, buy the one you can afford, but it's true that the VA5 is almost the same one, for much less money...

The voice feature is something I used to have on my Pebble steel that I do miss, so that feature alone is something I would jump towards. I recently got myself a Vivoactive 5 after using a Vivosmart 4 for several years. Unfortunately the VS4 stopped working correctly (I assume my altimeter is broken as walking on flat plain tracked 100+ flights of stairs, plus my sleep was barely tracked as it registered huge movements while sleeping - and I didn't change my overall movement during the night/sleep). I wanted to get the Venu 3 because of the altimeter, but even the Vivoactive 5 was too overpriced for my budget, so I settled with the VA5. I like the new functions of the VA5 with the recentness of it, but I do miss the altimeter. Is there a way to get an upgrade, similar to the heartrate band? Like, a little module you can pin to your clothes or whatever that tracks flights of stairs taken as well as the height I climb during indoor climbing/bouldering? Also, one that is compatible with Garmin watches or at least the Garmin Connect app? Thanks in advance for any suggestions ☺️

That's a tough call and it kind of brings me to the "final thoughts" section of my balance review. It's all about the ecosystem and data. The Garmin's have proven to be reliable and provide useful data with tools like Body Battery, and the new Sleep Coach function. Generally speaking I've had more consistent data and more accuracy when it comes to GPS and HR data on Garmin devices. That said, I do really like the Amazfit Balance. It's proven to be one of their more accurate devices BUT you do accept the rather inaccurate data provided in the Zepp app with inconsistent sleep data, and of course the training tools being sort of all over the place (VO2 Max, Training Load, etc...) in my experience at least. For the price, the Balance is pretty amazing but I'd take the Venu 3 over it if price weren't a factor.

But wanted the soft gold bezel and other colors of 3S and wish they had more color choices for the Venu 3. Despite limited choices I selected white option & ordered the 3 today and can’t wait for it to arrive in 2days. Other pain point is the bezel size, wish they’d stuck with same 42mm size of the 2Plus which used a 20” band. Now have to go to 22” band for the V3 and none of my extra colored 20” bands will work. Also seems like the band was thinner on the 3S and shorter and I have small wrist. Noticeably different to me. Great content by the way! Thanks for the insight.

Vivoactive 4 has the altimeter and not the 5... I chose the Venu 3 only because of that feature
@jasonlevine24309 ай бұрын
Thanks for the detailed comparison. I've had a Venu 2 for 2 years and am undecided about upgrading. I don't think the VA5 is an upgrade from the V2 - it's basically the same HW though the VA5 does have some nice SW upgrades (the sleeping coach, nap detection, recovery time, HRV status, etc.). Clearly, those SW enhancements can be added to the V2, but I don't think Garmin will do that. So, the choice for someone like me if I don't want to upgrade every year or 2, is to stick with a device that has the capability to have SW features added but Garmin will not support, or pony up at least $300 to get those features on a very similar device. As for the V3, there are some big HW differences - the speaker and microphone along with the phone/assistant features and the upgraded HR sensor. That's big, especially since the HW sensor is capable of supporting ECG (but hasn't yet received regulatory approval). So, my dilemma is really do I stick with a company that forces me to upgrade every couple of years to get the latest SW (even when my device can handle the SW upgrade) or do I go elsewhere. I get it that if Garmin updated the V2 they'd cannibalize sales of the VA5 for sure, and perhaps a bit for the V3, but isn't it better for them to reward loyal customers rather than have them thinking of jumping to another company?

The SW support is exactly the reason why I've left Garmin. I was frustrated that they don't support even pretty expensive watches (400+USD) for long and that I would upgrade just for SW features. @jasonlevine24309 ай бұрын
@@m.topfer That's good to know, but unfortunate. I definitely need the AMOLED screen since I found the MiP screen to dim to read inside. And the battery life is essential. Garmins either/or approach REALLY grinds my gears. How hard is it to put wellnes and running/biking features into the same watch at a reasonable price point? Their marketong strategy is to always leave users unfulfilled with their choice, because they're always missing some features. You're an outdoor person who also plays tennis? Too bad, the instinct 2 doesnt support that! You want advanced wellness features on a forerunner? No way a runner will care about his wellness. /s The list goes on. I refuse getting a new garmin watch until there is a substantial upgrade over my old one and not that rubbish which always leaves you wanting.

Why wouldn't they differentiate these with MIP+solar vs AMOLED screen is beyond me. Even if I wanted to upgrade my wife's VA4 I wouldn't because VA5 requires gesture to see anything in sunlight and doesn't have a barometer. Garmin is becoming ridiculous, they release more and more generic AMOLED watches but instead of adding something, they strip them of basic functions :/ They loose loyal customers and will fail miserably when AW users who switched will eventually miss full connectivity and ecosystem integration.
@ChaseTheSummit9 ай бұрын
I think the answer is simple. In the "daily fitness tracker / smartwatch" segment people don't want a MIP display. I can confirm this by the thousands of KZbin comments I get from people disappointed by displays in their COROS, Suunto or Garmin Fenix watches. Most users want AMOLED while a small percentage still want MIP for more active pursuits. Love it or hate it, AMOLED is likely the future.

Tired. We get tired of the same old phone...I upgraded from the Apple 8 to the 15 at Thanksgiving. I've had the Vivoactive 3 for three years now. There's nothing wrong with it, but as time passes, Garmin economizes, functions get upgraded and certainly the Vivoactive 5 screen is amazingly better looking than the 3. I was tired of the 3 and it's time to upgrade to the 5. For as often as things get better, faster and more colorful, I'm entirely happy with these new upgrades.

Hey, im thinking about upgrading my venu1 to venu3, but i am wondering if they have improved the gesture detection in venu 3...on venu 1, it takes like 3 seconds for display to turn on after you raise your hand. Its very annoying. Does it still happen on venu3? Thanks

I can't speak to the Venu 3, but on my 2 year old Venu 2 there's only a slight delay (like a half second or less).

'why don't they have the same features if the hardware supports it?' Because they can make more money by selling you two watches, or a watch that's effectively the same as one of them, with the features of both. Can't all be pro consumer (and simple) like Coros...

Didn’t hear him mention the fact that the venu3 has a blood oxygen sensor. Feels like an oversight, but I may have missed it
@ChaseTheSummit6 ай бұрын
They both have SPO2 sensors. The main difference is the Vivoactive 5 is the older generation 3 sensor while the Venu 3 has the latest Gen 5 sensor with ECG and skin temperature tracking on board.

GPS based elevation readings aren't very accurate. Sure, if you're running/biking from one place to another, it works. But it doesn't capture all the floors I walk daily just to get a cup of coffee at home.
@ChaseTheSummit7 күн бұрын
@@marshallcierovola376 you’re not wrong. But I guess the question is what do you do with that coffee stair climb data? Does the value of it outweigh the 2x plus price difference?

I‘m missing recovery time and training status and effect for that price. It doesn‘t bring me to garmin from my Apple Watch. The Venu 3 is nearly a plastic device. It‘s a bit overpriced.
@ChaseTheSummit9 ай бұрын
You still get the basic "Recovery Time" on both the Venu 3 and Vivoactive 5 but it's missing the more advanced stuff like Training Status , Load, Readiness, ect... I agree. It's a bit frustrating how those features are always left out. I do think the Venu 3 is a great Apple Watch alternative though and it comes with a lot more "wellness/sport" features out of the box rather than needing 3rd party apps to do a lot of that on the Apple Watch.
@m.topfer9 ай бұрын
@@ChaseTheSummit I don't understand why they can't add these functions at least to Venu. That would be a nice differentiator between Vivoactive and Venu series. The fact that you don't get almost any advanced garmin stuff on 450USD watch is just unacceptable. How much should it cost to get a good-looking watch with SW features that they've already developed for their Forerunner series? Is 450USD really not enough?

@@ChaseTheSummit do u think training readiness and training effect is important for weightlifting in the gym?
@brucelin58428 ай бұрын
Coz I’m thinking of getting the 965 over the venu3 for traning effect in that regards , do u think I should do it? But at the same time I have sleeping problem, does venu3 have accurate sleeping detection? Can it really improve your sleeping ?
@m.topfer8 ай бұрын
I don''t do weightlifting so I can't help in that regard. For sleeping info I'd recommend "The Quantified Scientist" YT channel but I don't know if he reviewed these models. In general I wouldn't read to much into the reported phases of sleep etc. but global metrics like body battery etc. can quite well capture how effective was the sleep overall. I'd guess that there are so many other factors, that you will not notice the difference between FR965 and Venu3 (if both are comfortable enough to sleep with) - journaling, analysis of your activity before sleep etc. will play much bigger role than the model of the watch on your journey to improving sleep. Don't expect too much and without other methodological approach the watch itself won't improve your sleep. It's just one of the tools.
