@@ChaseYokoyama It's a good benefit for military, but if you are an enlisted person more than likely you can't afford some of the hotels or flights. Maybe if you are an officer you have a more discretionary funds available. This is coming from an Army Veteran.

Great video Chase! There are so many sneaky ways to get more value from our cards so I love seeing videos like this. I am planning on getting the Charles Schwab version in the future but for now I’m just subbing with the gold card only. Also I just wanted to mention that I think they also offer a Morgan Stanley version of the platinum card… just wanted to bring it up in case people were wondering! Keep up the great work.

If you travel a lot it’s so worth it, I get into delta sky lounge when I use delta and the food is great. And you also get priority pass and access to the centurion lounge. Those lounge’s cost a lot to get into

FYI there’s a way to almost bypass the annual fee through the Morgan Stanley Amex Platinum although it requires slightly more legwork. They also give you complimentary 1 authorized year ($175 value annually!) and this is on top of the original credits, so definitely see this card being the best for long term as essentially the card would be subsidized greatly. The only downside is Morgan Stanley requires 25,000 to be sitting in their cash/checking account otherwise the monthly fee is $55 for maintenance. Could also just pay the $55 fee a month and end up paying $660 which is still $35 cheaper than normal AF

Have you done this? The credit frog has a lot of videos breaking this down and it's not as simple as you suggest. You need two different accounts with Morgan Stanley, 5K in one and 25K in the other. And in the second account you need to have at least $5,000 going in and out every month. Then you have to wait a year and you can get your 695 reimbursed. I'm military so I don't pay the annual fee but I'm still looking to get that 695 credit.

And yes I’m planning on doing it, currently in the process of allocating the 25k to put in that Morgan Stanley account and in regards to the $5k transfers a month I’ve seen KZbinrs mention that you can simply set up an automatic transfer from a checking account and once the transfer is completed you can move it back as you wish as it’s not required to keep above $25k in the account. Just need to have the consistent transfer of 5k, so I’ll try to set that up with my Chase account. It’s definitely a bit of work to start and setup but I see a lot of value in the end result.

I know this is 11 months later, but just more FYI. The other downside is that putting 25k in a checking account is worse than putting it in a HYSA over 4.5% (I use CIT bank and get 4.85%). 25000 * 4.5% = $1125 a year. Subtracting at most 37% for taxes, you still rather put your money in a HYSA ($700) and offset the cost of an Amex plat card.

Great video! Thanks for the help. When I check out from making purchases on Amazon, I'm asked if I want to use my AMEX points. I believe that I get .65 to .70 for each point using Amazon. Is this the best use of well over 100,000 points or it is better to use the points toward pricy items like flights? I was curious if booking through AMEX Travel would give full point credit as Amazon gives less credit.

I want to know how he afford the Fine Hotel Collection. I am considering canceling the Platnium and going to Gold because I can't get any value from the FHR because the hotels are all 500+ a night.

ya the FHR is usually really expensive. you may catch a good deal during off peak season or by looking every once in a while. But the FHR benefits aren't the only great thing about the platinum card. Also, consider downgrading the platinum card to gold instead of cancelling it.

I chatted with Amex customer service and the FHR /hotel collection benefits are given out by the hotel themselves. So if they are staying at different hotels I think it worked. 🤷🏽‍♂️ I havent tried it myself so theres always the possibility that it wasn't exactly as he said.
