The only time I had to buy a System the people I chose wanted to install Goodman. I told them I wanted Rheem/RUUD so they put it in for me. After my install they were so impressed with it they started handling Rheem/RUUD.

Amp draw on your low voltage will tell you a lot…that will be a call back…ran across many doing the same thing…they had a bad run of defrost control boards

I find a lot of wiring inside those units that chaf and cause sporadic shorts. The tiniest of rubs with just a little bit of wire exposed can cause a lot of issues.

I had one of thoes phantom shorts and change the contactor. A week layer started doing the same thing. Change out defrost boards and took care of it. Found just a light discoloration on the back of the board.

Guys blame Goodman. It usually isn’t the equipment, its usually a sloppy or incorrect installation. Very common brand in South Carolina and they get a workout in our summers

Chasing down a short that only does it once in a while, makes it difficult. If you get called back and if it shorted good enough, you may find it, burnt or whatever. Changed out a wire on an old style Trane unit years ago that was completely burnt. It was fine after that, and I never did find the cause. Just crazy sometimes, nice work.

I'm wondering if you could have some "green death" under the insulation on that reversing valve wire, when you moved it around it made contact again at least for the time being. I would have replaced that contactor for sure, it might be intermittently causing the LV issue, at the very least if it's sounding like that it's going to s**t the bed any time.

Tips: jumper common to ground. If your common is loose this will make chattering stop. Focus on common side. Also, you have 24 volt outside, jumper directly to contactor or reversing valve. If chattering goes away you have something in that circuit dropping voltage. Also check for voltage drop between tstat and contactor or reversing valve. Defrost board, time delays and pressure switches all likely culprits. Just found a low pressure switch yesterday that was opening way before the low pressure. Measured voltage drop at contactor through the switch.

I have to wonder if maybe one of the connections had some corrosion on it; not a short, but an open. That contactor sounds like a buzzer. Shouldn't it just close and remain almost silent? Possible debris in it, like dead ants?

They are known for the wires strapped to the accumulator tubing to chaff and cause a short. When you moved the wiring around ut probably moved the chaff off the copper. You will be back probably. Especially after a hard rain. Have seen the same problem on many goodmans. Took me a while to isolate the problem after a few call backs. Now i head right there if it is an intermittent short.

For intermittent Problems, I would use the "bang, Wiggle, Tug" tests, and I could usually seek out bad connections in short order. The real hidden ones are the Corroded wire inside the insulation and it is not visible Retired 37 Year Telecom / Sound Tech. Mike M.

I don’t believe you had a short, but I believe it was a bad low volt connection combined with the contactor coil causing to much voltage drop for the reversing valve. Keep up the good work I enjoy watching

The contactor has issues, it sounds like the low voltage electromagnet if loose in the contactor case creating the 60hz buzzing. You need to start testing contactors with voltage drop test across the contacts when the system is on. meter on voltage, one probe on the output of one leg of the contactor and the other probe on the same leg at the disconnect side of the contactor. If the contacts are good you will read 0 volts, anything above zero is from have having worn or pitted contacts.

Love your videos, but I have 50% hearing loss and depend on closed captioning. With your channel focused more on the work itself, I can’t read lips or pick up on visual cues that fill in where I might have missed a word. Your recent videos don’t have closed captioning at all. I hope you can consider making it available for subscribers with hearing difficulties.

@@tedhicks5431a bad crimp where? I kept having a low voltage short on a Bard unit that is still bothering me. It makes the contactor just pull in and then let go. I couldn’t find a short and the problem continued even after changing the contactor and the thermostat. I would manually engage the contactor and it would stay pulled in.
