I think I remember the FDA not seeing American cheese as cheese because of how it's processed and that it needs to be at least half part cheese to make the cut. The processing is only that it is diluted in water so it melts on foods easier. It's just watered down chedda and closer to cheese sauce. Plastic is only to keep it in slice form and not blob. I'm sure the plastic is safe but we can never be so sure. There is PFAS on everything anyways. American cheese is fine, but don't get me started on certain meats like bolognese. Some of that is mulcified refuse meat depending on the brand.
