Open for the first time in 9 years, what a wonderful thing to see. I used to go over in October, Cast and Blast after steelies, and Muleys or Whitetail. There are some large Bull Trout that lurk in there, biggest I've ever run across on the east side. Super video, great job, loved it!

Thank you sir! It was just an amazing trip and to experience it was nothing short of fantastic!

Great hatchery summer run and on a streamer too. Now you need to get one on the spey rod. This summer and fall has been a good one for steelhead. Hopefully this is just the start of an upswing for steelhead numbers, summer and winter.

Leaf talked about that, he feels that good things are on the horizon!

@FlyFishDan That is good to hear. My BC trip was the best I have had in about 15 years. I'm hopefull!

Did you swing the stone fly + chronomidge or under an indy? And for the steelhead, you said it was caught on a swung small size sculpzilla?
@FlyFishDanАй бұрын
I was dead-drifting the stone fly + chironomid under a big OROS indicator, I did a quick switch to the white sculpzilla did a swing and caught that nice hatchery steelhead! You can find that fly on Reds Flies - feel free to use my code to save a few bucks too (FFD).

I currently bought a 9 ft. 8 wt. for Saltwater i have a 9 ft leader and having problems casting , is this because i am not use to long leader and should shorten it or is there a lesson i should practice or is the fly not sufficiently heavy.
@theredfishchronicles79292 ай бұрын
If you are fishing salt water then I usually use an 8ft leader for redfish so 9ft isnt crazy. I usually use 6ft of 30# mono and 2ft of 16# to 20# flouro tippet. The mono gives you good shock absorption while the flouro gives you the abrasion resistance and ultra clear its known for. Try a little heavier fly but keep at it man.

Take a casting clinic. If it’s even a halfway decent instructor you’ll get a lot of good info out of it. They can see what you’re doing wrong and fix it. Elbow in, don’t break (bend) your wrist, more of a back/forth push/pull than an arc. Hard stop at the time of direction change, learn to double haul…😂remember, everyone sucks at casting 👍🤜
@FlyFishDanАй бұрын
What they said! Keep at it (practicing) you'll get there!

FFD: "I'm fishing my 7wt for some chromers..." A chinook: "You brought a knife to a gun fight..." What a difference from a year or two ago, watching you get skunked day after day chasing steelhead; now you're catching right and left. Well done and ☮ from North Idaho.

Yeah... I never swing anything less than an 8wt. Spey rod as I hate being under-gunned . Even with single-handed rods ... the lightest I have is an 8wt.... I can't deal with those Itty bitty flies I can't see the tiny hole to tie on.....without a magnifying lens
@FlyFishDanАй бұрын
@justal4844 My FFD series can handle the big fish :)) I have FINALLY figured this steelhead fishery out! That, and a little luck :))

It doesn't hurt that this particular river hasn't been open in 9 years. It used to pay out like this for me every fall/late fall/early winter, until the accumulated snow made it impossible to climb down to the river to fish in nearly every place. But I wasn't fly fishing, either, nearly all the time. I've only caught 4 summers and zero winter's fly fishing, and 3 of the four were where Dan is in this video.
@williamcooke6056Ай бұрын
@@FlyFishDanAnd you have video to prove that, for sure! Awesome work, Dan! It isnt as easy taking steelies when you were there, as it always was for me earlier during October low on that stream. On a personal note, I've learned so much from you, and plan to order one of your custom rods this spring. Whenever I travel, I'm carrying a minimum of two dandy Cubans with me (U.S.Merchant Marine 18 years) so I can drop them on you if I should spot you somewhere streamside or in travel mode, as a special thank you for making me a better fly fisherman then I'd thought possible. I could also drop them off at some fly shop you frequent in my travels, to actually ensure you get them fairly soon. Just make sure you trust who will hold them for you! 😂 so let me know, my form of patreon to you, good sir! Fish on!
