Chasing CP

We went train chasing for the first time since we bought the Broncos!
Couldn't pass up the amazing weather and the stars aligning for a steam engine to be running on my day off! We ended up chasing Canadian Pacific #2816 (The Empress) from Portage to Milwaukee, and then down to Gurnee. CP #2816 is a 4-6-4 "H-1b" Hudson built in 1930 by Montreal Locomotive Works.

Yeah, it was super sketchy, and it could’ve ruined a lot of people’s day (if not worse)! It felt really good to be out chasing some steam again! It’s been too long!

Great Video! That clip of it crossing the bridge is perfect! How often does it make service stops and how can you find that information?

The rods needed to be greased every 100miles or so, however… it’s not a set distance, because they plan their service stops to where they can fit it in with minimal interference with regular revenue traffic. They departed Portage and serviced in Nashota, which was less than 100 miles, but they wouldn’t have had a better spot to service at the 100 mile area… so they serviced there, and had enough mileage to get to Franklin Park after.

Your fancy Bronco was the only non-train I took a photo of at Portage on Monday... I love it! 🤩 I'm glad I opted to head straight to Columbus after the train left Portage Yard rather than deal with rail fans and their "creative driving". 🙄 There was a brand new pickup truck with it's side caved-in at the Columbus depot when I arrived there just after the train passed... I'm wondering if it was a casualty of rail fan excitement.

lol thanks! one of the CP Railroad Police guys told us he thought it was rad! Yeah, I’m all for getting creative with speed limits on train chases… but I don’t like the passing with on-coming traffic part much!
