Glad you've healed enough to get back riding. That MARS is a magnificent machine I saw a number of times over the years, and was always impressed. Growing up near the Vancouver International airport in Richmond B.C. I saw a lot of memorable aircraft, including the first Boeing 707 do a fly past at the local air show. Have photos of a Vulcan on display.etc. Aircraft and motorcycles, memories of my youth for sure.

Thanks, yes back in the saddle. A vuclan...now that would have been an event to see! I feel privileged to have seen the Mars a few times and will miss it. But, I'm not far from the BC Av Museum, so it will make a perfect trip down on a bike to reconnect every now and again. Cheers.

I live not far from YYJ and got to watch the Mars and Snowbirds fly by in a banking turn from my deck. What a sight!

We rode down to Pat bay and were blown away by to flyby and landing. almost everyone from the island has a personal story about the Mars Bombers. We enjoyed yours.

Great to see you in the saddle again, BMR! The final flight was making headlines here in Europe too. Fascinating history, considering it got converted from a cargo plane. They described how the pilot has to hover ithe Martin Mars over the water at 120kmh while they lower snorkles to refill water tanks - no touch down, that's just nuts; those pilots must be artists.

That is phenominal. Dropping water over a forest fire in tight confines is dangerous work, but picking up on the move is absolutely amazing and something we likely won't see again. Like you say, artists.

Hawaii Mars. Most people call it a sea-plane, but it's actually a flying boat.

I remember these as a kid growing up on v.island when the government used to put out forest fires and not just shriek climate change with mouths agape.

Have you personnaly tested the Co-op gas for ethanol? My Co-ops in Duncan have clearly re- labelled the Premium pumps as containing ethanol. From how I read it the Federal law clearly states all gas sold by a company must by volume contain a certain percentage of ethanol. If the Premium is truly ethanol free then they have to put additional ethanol into one of their other fuel products.

No, Lyle, I haven't. But my local Parksville Coop gas station has just had all the pumps replaced with new ones (a month ago), and has - in accordance with what Vaughn Turnbull told me (the Operations Manager Petroleum Energy Sales and Marketing for the Federated Co‑operatives Limited), re-labelled the new pumps as 87, 89 "may contain ethanol", but the 91 pump has no such new label attached - which would be a strange thing to do if it contained ethanol. From Duncan south the premium contains 10% ethanol, from Ladysmith north it is still ethanol free. Gas can contain E5% or E10%. I'm guessing the 87 and or the 89 may contain a higher proportion of ethanol to offset the continued use of ethanol free 91 north of Duncan. Coop gas north of Duncan comes from a different producer/distributor than coop gas to the south. Hope this helps.

4:18 - look at the new gas pumps. While they are hard to read, you will see 2 White stickers above 87 and 89. "May contain Ethanol" . No sticker above the 91.

@@BlueMarbleRiderI think it would make a great BMR video to actually test a bunch of different fuel brands.

I read one reason to decommission the Martin Mars was it still needing leaded fuel for the thirsty star motors (plus a lot of maintenance on them per flight hour).
