We had one of these cars for 10 years. Let me explain the attraction for us. Firstly, simple and easy to drive for my wife as a beginner driver. Not too many bells and whistles to remember how to use/operate. It was dead set reliable. Only a battery and a set of tyres over 100,000k in 10 years + that long 10 year warranty which gave us the peace of mind (not that we ever had to use it). This was primarily a commute car for us to school, shops and back. We did however do several long trips Sydney to Brisbane with the seats folded down and packed to the gunnels when we moved to BNE. It performed that job well, as expected. The cream on the top for us, was after 10 years motoring, we almost got our money back when we sold it (to buy another Mitsubishi Outlander - also with 10 year warranty). It may not be perfect or match the competition, but it performed well for us for what we used it for and it met expectations.

Just ordered one for my partner we ordered the LS. She loved the features and the fact it’s got a manual handbrake, push button start and Apple car play. It has sufficient safety without going over the top. She’s using it as a work commuter and a local run around. Solid, proven and with a good warranty.

Why is the battle-axe ASX so popular? Why have sales increased by 45% in 2024? Why are sales for the Skoda Kamiq declining by 26% for the year to July? Are buyers really just suckers for Mitsubishi's brilliant marketing? A big reason is that the ASX is better value than you suggest. You can drive away in an ASX for $26k (with a manual gearbox) or $28k (with the CVT). The cheapest Seltos is $32k. When you flashed the picture of the Seltos on the video at 2:22, you showed the GT-line Seltos - which is $45k. A second reason is that the ASX has proven that it is dependable. Nothing ruins an ownership experience faster than an unreliable car. Quite a few MG or Volkswagen owners can attest to that. A third reason is that a lot of buyers dislike digital screens and hi-tech interiors. Less tech = less things to learn, fewer distractions when you drive, less to go wrong and lower prices if something does go wrong.

I think a lot of Mitsubishi's appeal is their history of providing reliable, fuss-free motoring with a decent spread of dealers and cheap repairs. Some drivers are intimidated by touch screens, digital displays and even keyless entry. I went for a drive in a friend's European car and it was such a faff... 'press the brake, now hold the start button, wait for the dash light, now release start, let go of the brake'... How is this better than turning a key? How is going through multiple menus while driving better than turning a dial?

Don’t believe the professional critics, these cars when properly serviced will give many many years of reliable trouble free driving. 2014 ASX 2.2 4WD Aspire, still going strong. Rental car industry trust them so that say more than any critic has to say.

@jstcraig My Magna is 25 years old and has never missed a beat. I still see plenty of them on the road but at the time they were also bagged for not being very exciting. There's a lot to be said for solid engineering over fancy toys.

Got the ASX MR for my father last Friday as it was one of the simplest cars out there. I'm so happy these cars aren't full of obnoxious tech even though the MR's push button start and keyless entry is a learning curve for dad. Even i enjoy driving it. Comfortable, does the job and it's the first car we've had with Android auto and a DAB radio. Hoping to get as long out of it as my Mazda 323 SP20 which was 22 years old before someone wrote it off!

Really? It will be doing EXACTLY what you want; cheap, fuss free motoring. Why can't journalists understand that? These things are bulletproof. I think that question is much more relevant to a car that costs 200k and has garbage resale, not this car which is one of the cheapest cars on sale that is still made in Japan.

Had a 2011 base model CVT for over 7 years, 185000 km when it was traded, ran faultlessly from day one until the last day i had it, we traded it for a new car for my wife as her car was worth about $30. Many interstate trips, family hauling, external sales running around, boat towing, small caravan towing, trips to the tip, Bunnings and all the usual stuff. Great size, a hell of a lot more fuel efficient than the 'professional car tester' seems to be getting, I had seen lows 5's on trips, and usually low 6's around town (no, not while towing). I still miss it, I would buy another in a heart beat if I needed a new car, at least they won't tell you off for looking at the speedo or try and take over the steering for you when you are driving like a goose (probably trying to find the temperature control on the i-pad) and won't break the bank, might not be the latest mod con, but just remember, all the new fashion stuff will be outdated in about 6-12months anyway, and free software updates will cease, then you will be paying through the nose for an update so things still work, ask Toyota what a map update is worth for a 5 year old car, give me a dial speedo and climate control buttons every day of the week over an i-pad. You miss the point, that most people buying a new car are stepping out of something that is 20 odd years old, not everyone has the disposable income (or are crazy enough, to be permanently in debt for a new car every 5 years). Most people want something that works reliably and has enough space for them.

Yep, I am just sad I could only get the base model because I want a manual. The dealers looked sheepish when they mentioned you have to start with a key and I was delighted, 😂. Higher level does have the push start option but only auto.

I am technology person(software engineer) but the car I prefer tend to carry very little tech, I would even go for manual if my wife and daughters could drive it which they can't. ASX fills all the checkboxes for me. It's reliable, not expensive, has just enough tech(Android Auto is fine), and is not killing my bank account. There's also very decent demand in the second hand market for these as well, so you know you're not holding onto a lemon. On the long drive, it can sometimes feel a bit uncomfortable, specially the back seats, but for normal drive in the city it's just fine. It does not claim to push the boundaries, it's a simple, somewhat boring but reliable car - if that's what you're looking for.

Most car journalists think the people who buy these types of cars want fancy tech and amazing driving dynamics and all the other rubbish that comes with the latest cars, some just want something that starts, drives well and is reliable. Who cares if your toaster model came out 10 years ago or last year, you just want it to toast bread well and thats it, thats its only job.

MG has a puny 1.5l petrol engine. Jolian has a crap 1.5L + dsg combo and rubbish suspension. The inability for motoring journalists to understand what joe average wants in a car is never more apparent than in this review. If Mitsubishi were to refresh this car they would end up with a mid field product with a much higher price. I give you the new Triton as evidence.

I was scrolling through cars just for shits and giggles, and this one immediately caught my eye because it wasn't laughably overpriced and they weren't bombarding you with financing. The dude is either rich, or loves being in ridiculous levels of debt just so he can have a nice toy. Either way, just seems totally out of touch.

Your comments number 1 answered your own question, it’s reliable, it’s trusted and it is know, number 2 your review is out of step with the Australian buyer. Mostpeople do not want Chinese cars, and are happy with what they know. The warranty is inviting to buyers but not the ingest thing. A lot of buyers do not want the say so great technology reviewers go on about. They want simple, easy to use and drive. Mitsubishi unlike reviewers listen to the buyers needs. This is why the Mitsubishi ASX still sells well. There are 2 replacement models selling around the globe but a small yet Australians have not run screaming for it.

I have a 2013 ASX which i love and might trade it in for another one when and if it starts to cost money. Super reliable. I cant stand whistles and bells. It has done 130000 km and all it has cost is tyres, a battery and regular servicing at the Mitsubishi workshopi. I do long trips often with my dog. With a back support cushion its comfortable. The gearing has got me out of trouble more than once. Its reasonably economical. Plus i like the way it looks - much more attractive to me than some of the newer sleeker cars. The only reason i would change is to buy a hybrid.

I have a 2016 asx ls Es. Paid 30k back then. Decent car. Daily driver. Just use my phone for maps etc. Serviced it maybe 3 times. Touch wood everything is humming along nicely. It's a simple no frills car.

You are wrong in saying that Mitsubishi is marketing it in a smart way to keep it relevant. What they have done smartly is to not make it overly modern like the others. Each brand should have something unique and the ASX is unique as it does not have tonnes of tech and features like all the other brands. Many of us want a simple car which it is. No one cares about dated interiors if it solves their purpose of having a car. Yes it’s rock solid and yes that’s why you see thousands of these on our streets.

I had an ASX as a rental car while I was visiting Perth and I thought it was an alright car in my opinion. What I liked about it is, it’s easy to drive and has all the physical buttons which not many cars have nowadays. One thing I agree with the car reviewers is the handling is pretty crap around corners. If I was gonna buy a small SUV, I’ll have a look at other cars like the Skoda Kamiq or VW T-Cross

A new ASX is an excellent ownership proposition. They've been on the market so long all the bugs have been ironed out. Still made in Japan. 4B11 engine is bulletproof and can run on any petrol you can find. 10/10 warranty is why sales are increasing. It just works. Will still be driving along when the haval is a recycled drink can.

I own a current model exceed 2.4L and we get under 7L / 100km on highway driving at 100km/h, and I don't potter around in it. I would struggle to get it using 10L. The car uses 7 - 8L around town. How do we achieve this? We don't put cheap crappy petrol in the car - E10 and all that rubbish. We have tested Premium 95 and 98 and have noticed 98 gets the best fuel economy, in fact the price premium of 98 over 95 pays for it and more. My cousins own a MR 2.0L and use premium fuels too and don't notice any power shortage. I used E10 years ago and couldn't believe the power drop (It was a 380) so figured out long ago a drop in power means pushing the pedal more and therefore using more fuel (even though it was cheaper) overall the fuel consumption price cannot beat Premium 98. I think Aussies have figured this out and journos haven't. Who cares if the interior is old? It is brand new to the new owner and hard plastic dare I say will not crack in the harsh Aussie sun. And for around $56 you can buy a USB adaptor on ebay that turns apple car play and android auto into wireless (it is about the same size as a USB stick). No you can't charge the phone with this aftermarket accessory but most of the time the phone is charged at home and you can plug it in to charge it on longer trips. To me these more tricked up fancy electronics are going to be expensive to fix as nothing lasts forever. This journo has a disconnect with size of cars and value for money. The ASX is made in Japan too. I rest my case.

This vehicle proves that a significant proportion of consumers want a basic, affordable, jack of all trades. Modern tech has become intrusive. If I was moving myself and a few kids around suburbia, why would I pay more for a smaller segment offering from say Toyota? Or risk the long term reliability and costs associated with the European offerings like VW or Skoda?

We bought a GSR model recently and bang for buck it cant be beaten. Has everything we needed and wanted, 10 year warranty as we are happy to service at the dealership, 4 years roadside, 10 years capped price servicing. 8 inch screen is enough for everything inc Google maps and Apple carplay. In this pricing sector for a 2nd to top spec its the best option in my opinion for a non Chinese built car. Mitsi's may be a bit dated and boring to some but I will take reliability over flashiness everyday. The Chinese cars will come with a lot of wow factor but will this still thrill you when you are constantly underwhelmed by issues and long waits for replacement parts.

I think these guys who do some of these reviews are out of touch with what people want in a car sometimes. I’m in my middle 60’s and we just bought the ASX GSR with the 2.4 engine, we didn’t want Chinese or a electric or hybrid, we wanted a petrol engine, we didn’t want all the tech BS we will never use, it’s easy to drive, reliable and good warranty. I was speaking to a young girl who also just purchased the car reviewed and she said the same, she said she has all the tech she needs in her phone lol which she runs through infotainment screen the rest she was ok with.

Here is the perfect market for the ASX, the seniors. Seniors don't want a car with a lot of binging noise, hoping through menus to configure settings & too much complexity & flashy screen. What many seniors would want out of their vehicle to hop in, with simple controls, clear gauges & large buttons, leave it on their favourite radio station & go about their day. Most seniors will come from significantly older vehicles, which will be night and day when they step into an ASX. It's nice that the ASX has modern features like Carplay/Android Auto. However, many seniors won't utilize it. What is beneficial about the ASX is that many seniors would find it very easy to get & out due to being higher off the ground than a traditional car. The ASX has a large glasshouse that enhances the visibility. The driving dynamics of the ASX are uninspiring, yet most seniors don't care about driving dynamics. To top it all off, the ASX comes with a 10-year warranty. Most seniors are happy to drop off their ASX at their local Mitsubishi dealership & most seniors will have peace of mind knowing their ASX will have manufacture support for a significant period. However, the Street Package is possibly the worst value of the ASX range. I would just go for the LS for the same amount of money.

Toyota and Volkswagen have been doing this for decades. Golf as CitiGolf ran for like 25 years, Polo became Vivo and continued for almost 20 years. Toyota had the Tazz and Quest. This is not unusual when a car has a following. It does surprise me that a Mitsubishi would garner such a following though.

Toyota is better for just under $10,000 over the price of the asx street, if you want what the street comes with, pearl paint, leather piano steering wheel, alloy gear knob, ally scuff plates, front and rear skid plates with red accents, gsr spoiler, blacked out wheels, handle covers, rear boot scratch cover, and sticker kit. 10k extra when you have 30k saved it’s a big difference to some.

I bought a 2024 ASX LS and it does exactly what I want it to do and that’s drive around reliably will be honouring that 10 year/200k warranty as insurance for that Jatco transmission (they have history of breaking occasionally) but if the transmission is serviced more often than what the dealers recommend that will increase your chances of everything lasting 15-20 years no dramas. The Mivec 2 ltr is tried and tested and all the electronics work as intended. Chinese cars are garbage and while Toyota, Mazda, Honda are all fantastic vehicles they are overpriced. The ASX is fine as a little all rounder don’t care what the critics say.

its good that aussies are smart and dont listen to the car reviewers that love those soft touch dashboards, big screeens with no air condition dials. smart people would purchase a reliable car. some of those aussie reviewers will make you buy an mg ev or gwm vehicles with no proper reliability credit. then you listen to them and purchase it and have tons of issues. an asx or even eclipse cross may not have the fanciest interior but they are reliable, an equivalent tucson with a turbo 1.6 will blow its engine and tranny in 5 years or less. also stay far from those chinese vehicles with dual clutch, the ones in the mg overheats on a simple hill which car reviewers will never cover in reviews. the dual clutch in korean cars may not be good either , however they are much better built than the ones in gwm, mg etc

The more simple it is...the more likely I'll buy it.... getting a manual versions on the 30th... the Toyota Kia and Hyundai I test-drove suspension felt exactly the same the corolla cross steering delay was the same as the ASX the most responsive was the stonic though at 3000rpm it flat spots (due to an injection timing transition) according to the dealer😂... if I wanted a money pit I would have bought an AMG

On sort of a side note, my wife had an ASX about ten years ago, it had the most useless heated seats, just a narrow strip top to bottom and only luke warm on the hottest of the two settings, the difference to the 9 5 Saab Aero I had at the time was vast, the Saab had the most comfortable seats, with the best seat heaters ( three settings, full base and backrest heated) of any car I have ever had in over forty years of car ownership, so my question is why do car reviewers only ever just mention whether a car being tested has heated seats but never appear to critique as to how well they work, surely that is as relevent to prospective buyers as the infotainment and camera quality on offer?

They are great cars, people buy them because they will still be driving around in 15 years, unfortunately, I can’t say the same for its Chinese competitors. There’s ASX examples on the road with 300,000kms on them, and still getting around. Simple reliable motoring, there’s nothing wrong with that 😀. Some of us don’t want tech that tells you that you are doing 1km over the speed limit, or that monitor your eyes. I don’t find this helps you drive safely, it’s more distracting than anything.

What is really sad is that Mitsubushi has withdrawn from the UK. The ASX has great appeal for the average motorist even if reviewers slam it. No car is perfect. I wouldn't assume that everybody wants all the modern "bells and whistles" on more modern designs. It's all going too far these days!

As one of those aforementioned ASX buyers - I'll tell you what you're missing. Its one of the top 5 cheapest new cars in Australia. Its Japanese. It has a 10 year warranty. Its reliable. It has stood the test of time. Its just a nice little all-rounder and about-towner. If you can't see the appeal of it, you should find a different job.

We are on our 3rd one, they are just epic honest cars. the 4B11 engine is also such a gem, zero issues ever with all of them. The only thing that would make this car better for me is a 6speed manual gearbox with some closer ratios. Dont agree with the underpowered engine dig. A Demo or 1/2 year old example is cheaper than B segment hatchback. Also get them while you still can because the new one is a renualt captur :/

this from a US buyer. i live in a snow state so we need AWD or 4x4. at 24K it was a cheap and simple car to buy. yes its slow and underpowered but it gets you where you need to go. all my family have kias (sorento,seltos 2023s) and they have nice interiors but one is already starting to sip alot of oil. the other contender for that price was mazda which is a great buy. havyng more tech means more issues at times. look at toyota new cars that are setting them selfs on fire. sometimes we just want a simple car.

I agree that they are basic in features. With mine a 2018 m0del I get fuel use in Syd. West. suburbs of no more than or less than 9.5, not 10. Re power, It is not under powered at all. Not everyone wants or needs a turbo engine also. They wear out faster. Good review though.

This car is so lacking in modern features that............. nobody wants. Turbocharged cars are expensive to run ( should have more oil/ filter changes for longevity) all to get performance/fuel efficiency you don't need. Hybrid systems add to the cost of purchasing and will take years to recoupe ,plus adds to the electronics problem in modern cars, which are horrible and intrusive to live with on a daily basis and are also a main cause for the car going into the workshop for expensive repairs.

It’s made in Japan, shouldn’t matter where it’s made, but it does, it always does and if the price is comparable you’re choosing a Japanese car over a Chinese or Korean. Korean engines in general are still made cheap with subject to failure materials, any experienced mechanic will tell you that, and Chinese engines forget it. These ASX are not perfect but hugely more reliable than the competition.

This is the car you take to the laundromat that’s conveniently next door to a Cheesecake shop. You drop off your laundry, then pop over for a slice of cake. Sitting in your ASX, you devour the whole thing because, let's face it, there’s nothing sweet about this car.

The ASX needs a full size spare tyre...digital speedometer...rear air vents...sat nav...and 30% cheaper servicing costs.

I could forgive most of the issues, I do have some fondness for the tried and tested, and 'latest design trends' dont do anything for me. But 10l/100 is a complete deal breaker.

my 20 year old Aussie V6 wagon averages around 11.5 - for a modern 4cyl to use 10L/100 is just shocking.

I remember hiring one of these a couple of years ago. Gutless and absolutely terrible to drive particularly with that awful CVT. But, for those who just want a simple bum shifter without too much of the crap that seems to come with more modern cars, it’s adequate.

I think most of these are commercial sales at vastly discounted prices, to make the sales pitch sound good to the boardrooms. I doubt there would be many private buyers for these.

As a motoring enthusiast who spends too much time reading watching and tweaking cars and often being called upon for advice, I hate this vehicle - I had the misfortune of using my sister-in-law's 2015 model between Coffs and Sawtell last year - talk about CVT's being given a bad name! Can't recall a car as engine-coarse, ride-crashy and downright loud when the engine went about 3000rpm. But ... would I recommend my much preferred vehicles Seltos or even Kamiq to most of the family and friends (so many women) who come to me for advice, over this one? Probably not, because like me when it comes to clothing, they just want something that's presentable and easy to care for (I do sew patches on the holes of my pants but that's an exception). And that's where the disconnect is between us enthusiasts and them happen, as Tom correctly points out. So in a nutshell, yep this vehicle soooo works for so many people (because I too hate all the bings and bongs of the new cars, in part driven by that taxpayer leech ANCAP), just not for me. Horses for courses (except this horse for me is awfully s**t! 🤣)

It's a good basic white good with doesn't come with an IoT subscription, or a dumb tablet on the dash, which is a tick. But it's still a miserable small SUV

Spot on assessment on a car that is not worth its asking price today. Its age is apparent the minute you sit in the car and push some buttons. The amount of give in the panel surrounding the buttons is shocking for a car that is priced high 20ks to low 30k. Maybe the asking price is loose change for some. I work damn hard for my money and I cannot see myself parting my money for the ASX at it's current asking price.
