how many KMs on your tester? Any chance those springs and bushings would settle a bit after 5000km? Either way, sounds too sporty for the school run.

@@CampbellSimpson Good questions. The test car (our long termer) had 2000-2500km on the clock in this video, because it's been used for some marketing photography. I'll definitely monitor how the suspension beds in (which can happen) as I anticipate getting the car up to 10,000km in its time with us.

People who complain about the lack of touchscreens in the Mazda range simply haven't spent enough time using the system. It's so easy to use and at the end of the day, safer for everyone. They have done an excellent job making it intuitive.

it sucks for smartphone mirroring. you cant get past that. you have to spend a long time watching the screen as you use the dial. that is never safer than a quick tap.

I believe the hardware is touchscreen with ability in Apple Carplay.

I've owned a current model manual Astina 3 since 2019 and the dial infotainment system is perfect, I'm glad it's not a touchscreen and once you get use to the position of the controls you'll never want touch.

Perhaps you should mention that it IS a touchscreen, and that the touchscreen can be enabled for CarPlay and AA while driving through the settings.

Australian Mazda salesman here, just wanted to point out that when using carplay it can be used as a touchscreen, it just needs to be enabled in the options :) I hope this helps!

Touch screens are so 20th century. I moved from a Mazda CX-5 GT last year and the two biggest things I miss are the HUD and direct screen access through the adjustment knob. No stretching, bumpy roads don’t interfere with access and no fingerprints!!! All cars should get rid of touch access to their screens. Lloyd

Have a petrol gt model and have found the ride to be less firm than the CX 5 I used to own. Surprisingly good but still nicely firm! Who wants a yank tank that is only good in a straight line?

I test drove both 3.3t petrol and 2.5 phev on urban roads last weekend. Exterior look is actually fantastic and Mazda red is shining out easily. The car is elegant and well-proportioned when you see it in person. Interior atmosphere is phenomenal. Material quality is definitely on par with most German luxury brands. Personally not a big fan of large screens as you mainly focus on road being the driver. Compared to cx5,. it’s also roomer inside and I sit comrtortably at the back (1.8m). The new (for Mazda) Para Sun roof is a must. In terms of driving, 3.3t petrol is puncher especially when it goes above 50km+ and its 6 cyclinders sounds more refined. 2.5 phev is ideal for low speed cruising at city as it seems handle lower speed better with ev assist. The ev experience is similar to toyota hybrid but then it’s a lot more powerful. When curising around town, you can’t say it’s an agile car given its weight but but body roll is well-controlled and steering is accurate. The only downside to me is the gear shifting - it’s quite vauge at lower speed and not as direct as it’s 6-speed auto ( yet not as hesitated as VW dsg nor Benz 7-speeds so it’s still doing fine). Also CX-60 suspension is on firmer side but then it's is not unacceptable when going through bumps. I also watched many US CX-90 reviews recently and it seems the above 2 issues are not as visible as CX-60 - am wondering if Mazda did some tweaks already. Overall it’s not prefect with some shortcomings but the 6 cyclinders engine setup defintely shines. For people who consider Lexus or Mercedes they should test drive and test it out. 3.3t GT range is about 73k drive away which is the bestbuy in its ranges.

@@daweigo6851 I think Mazda targeted cx-60 as a sporty suv this it’s on firmer side compared to cx-5. Even say so, its something acceptable and I found no issues during my test drive, when going roundabout or bumps. My friend who is driving a GLC diesel also happy with the ride.

CX-60 has been out in Europe UK for 6 months, initial production had wrong shocks and sways and were all replace before delivery. There is a 1-2 shift shock at low RPM, light throttle. Many complaints but there is also a TCM software update just out. I would presume Australian stock would already have this update if made after about mid March 2023. CX-90 in USA also has this low speed 1-2 shift shock, I expect an update to TCM in near future.

Sounds like an excellent car, Tom. Particularly for people like me who prefer a slightly firmer ride than most. Also, for those of us who eschew EV’s as impractical for my use, and CVT transmissions which are generally awful under the Welly a diesel one of these appears to be an excellent option for a long term car. I am VERY interested to see how the car pans out over the longer period and how it compares to other cars. An excellent first review, Tom, for which I thank you.

I get my petrol GT next week but after test drive my opinion of suspension was it was very floaty on rebound and soft with bit too much roll. This added to the experience when hard on throttle with the pushing you in seat feeling. I'll need to have more seat time but first impression was a good set of Eibach springs might help for my taste. Engine was very strong and noise was cool in sport mode. Didnt notice any bad behaviour from gearbox and shifts were smooth. Brakes feel different perhaps related to the regen and you can hear the electric noises on slow down. Overall the car is awesome 👌

Yes, the suspension is overdamped, which is why you’re getting that sensation of floaty rebound (but not pogo). Nothing a set of springs and dampers properly dialled in won’t fix. You’re just more advanced than most in considering doing so!

Yes, it'll be an interesting one to watch. I would note, though, that the six-cylinder Evolve trim is a pretty great deal.

Indeed. I don't think anyone has been successful selling mass market and premium under the same brand, esp the failures at vw on that front. If they really want the new series to work, cx-5 to 9 has to be retired. Mazda seems to be doing everything against the industry trend. It's as if they are saying we can't compete head to head now and let's just try to grab that niche market that no one wants anymore. But how many does that sell?

Brought the GT petrol and quite happy with the ride/ tech so far. Considering the price of a new X3 -north $100k, NX 350H $86K, actually it is a pretty good deal if you want a premium family SUV. Inflation is crazy these days, GLC 300 can cost you over 112k. NX's suspension is a disgrace and I reckon CX-60 is still a driver's car.

Drove the GT Petrol on the weekend. Decent performance, ride and handling were superb. Felt strong, planted and also felt like it will be with you for the next 10+yrs without issues. I deliberately went over a few minor pot holes and it wasn't an issue on the 20" tyres. Great car except at the price point it's going to make you say, $80k for a Mid size SUV is a touch rich. But, hey $80 is the new $40 so that's where we are. People will struggle with the value equation though

Update. Bought the GT Petrol. I rode over rough stuff, highway and suburban streets and seriously didn't have any ride issues. No brainer decision.

I own a CX-60 Takumi PHEV. I had it for 10 months. I complained about the stiffness and they replaced the four shock absorbers. The difference is noticeable. They also improved the soundproofing on the doors that added more quietness. As I run 80 % on electric the savings are quite significant.On long journeys the consumption after battery depleted is 7,5 km/l. Please note that there is a setting that allows to use CarPlay with touchscreen stationary or on he go. Great video!

I almost bought this car but found out that if and when the battery fails after 8 years it costs 36k to replace.

The battery has a guarantee of 8 years. This does not mean it will fail. The price of such battery in eight years is unknown as well. Even if the battery is degraded you might loose 20 to 25% of EV only range. The car is completely usable, unless something else goes badly wrong.@@jam4763

I took an Azumi Phev for a test drive last week. We currently own a CX5. My impressions were that the ride quality is far superior to CX5. I found it much more upmarket than CX5 ride quality.. We have CX 60 GT hybrid pre-ordered and expect delivery next week. Most of your comments were fairly accurate to my thinking just not buying into the firmness of suspension deal. Thanks

Just ride a few times on speed-bumps and bumpy roads... you'll change your opinion. And Yes, I'm the owner of a late productions CX-60 PHEV with all the updates installed. Still not as good as my CX-5 was.

I agree. Own a G40e GT and ride quality is fine. More importantly it handles very well when you push harder. The car is awesome 👌

It has touch screen features for phone mirroring, it’s in the settings. You just have to turn it on.

Bought CX60 D 254hp version. After FPace it's quite stiffer, but diesel is killer. Dynamic/economy is crazy. For now happy. In Latvia I can get with 6y warranty what makes deal really sweet

You get a feeling that the inline 6 petrol is ripe for aftermarket mods. Only a matter of time someone will squeeze one into an MX5.

I would not park this car in the same limelight as Volvo XC60 and BMW X3. It’s way better and does not breakdown prematurely like the Chinese and German brands

the ride is firm, not stiff. And i preffer it in front of prancing vehicle that are hard to control. Though i have to say i am very dissapointed from PHEV fuel consumption. On a highway, when your trip is over 200km , it goes over 8L/100 km. But overal the avg. consumption considering city/highway is 5,4l/100km. I don't how the diesel is?

What a great video test as an avid Mazda owner from 1981 and my current drive is a 2019 manual Mazda 3 Astina hatch. My Govo lease ends Aug '24 and as much as I don't want to give up driving a manual (preloved MX5 will be sourced) I'm thinking of going SUV. My choice was a 2.5T CX5 Akera as since you have top spec you don't go backwards. After watching your test I have been swayed to the diesel CX60 since I do alot of regional long drives Orange - Sydney, Orange - Port Macquarie on a regular basis. I love your colour choice of your long term car and I'll be so watching for future updates. As for the infotainment system I'm so use to and LOVE the dial operation, touchscreen is distracting as once you get use to the dials and controls, drop hand off the centre console and you can navigate it well. Well done 10/10

Stiff ride quality indeed. But there seems to be a solution ... replacing the standard dampers with Koni Special Active dampers should improve the quality a lot. Already ordered a set and they get installed half august... 3 weeks and counting down 😁

Hey Tom, nice review, thanks. I’m seriously considering one of these. Mazda has got a lot right here. I’m somewhat shocked at the weight though and good as the diesel may be, what’s the point? Governments are going to legislate them out of existence. They aren’t much cheaper to run either when you consider that the petrol model will run on E10 or 91 and diesel fuel costs so much more. I’m not interested in the EV or hybrid proposition either it would be petrol for me.

Interesting video on the CX60. I am waiting to see the sedan with the inline6 if we get it. I have seen some US videos on the Mazda SUV and the reviewer commented on the auto gearbox similarly as you. It could be a thing to watch during your long term reviews to see if it is going to be successful.

Will keep a close eye on the auto 'box in preparing our long-term content. I'm still hopeful for a sedan or wagon on the RWD platform but I do not expect Mazda to do one.

I'm in the UK. I have test driven and ordered a PHEV version. I think maybe if I had driven as many cars as you guys do for a living I'd likely come to the same conclusions with regard to ride and refinement. But I come from a Kia Niro and I don't have the references that you have so to me, the CX60 is a bit of a revelation.

buy the CX-60 PHEV only with the Koni Special Active shocks... THEN you get a good ride on all those speed bumps. Just a must have option for the PHEV version 👍

Test drove same spec on Saturday and agree with your comments. Probably a bit less harsh on the ride quality and I made sure of some very broken concrete roads. I’d probably still downspec to the 18” though - chasing handling in a 2 ton SUV is a bit silly IMO. The diesel is sensational and the consumption for so much torque in a 2 ton vehicle is astonishing. I’d seriously question the hybrid running cost advantage at current electricity prices. An annoying question remains: Why the lower towing limit in the diesel? If it’s because of smaller brakes, then why does it have smaller brakes? Nobody at Mazda seem to be able to answer this. Along with a low payload and low boot space I honestly thought the brochure must have some bodgy cut and pasting.

On towing, the answer I have been given (which didn't make this video - I'm sorry) is that it is a cooling limitation, and that Mazda's engineers in Japan are very conservative around that kind of thing, so they have downrated the towing. Mazda Australia is aware of it. As for spec, yes, I think the D50e Evolve on 18s is a pretty good thing once you option the Luxury package - just wish you could get a stone/beige interior with that pack, but you're limited to black leather.

Thank you - excellent review. Best I have viewed. My dealer is chasing me to order so I was interested in your comments about the ride. I have a 2020 CX5 Akari and love it but want to try the petrol mild hybrid. Why is it mild and not full like Toyotas? Also turn your sound up a bit please -had to strain at times to hear and its not my PC as other video reviews were much much louder.

Hi John, I've got a g40e GT. Ride is good and similar over bumps to CX5. But the car is well insulated and most importantly handles well. So it's not as smooth as a RAV4 or Kluger but the steering accuracy is way better and it just feels good for performance driving. Depends what your used to but for me moving from sports car its like butter. In terms of Hybrid (when iStop is left in default on position) it only cuts the engine off when coasting (off throttle) and obviously stopped. It doesn't move the vehicle on electric motor alone like a Toyota Hybrid. The electric motor assist with power (M Hybrid Boost) and initial take off without you knowing. Power output of the electric motor is approx 18hp. You might notice some slight electric regen noises as you slow down charging the 48v battery. In the old days when fuel was cheap you wouldn't bother with this complexity just add more fuel & boost pressure. My advice is buy this car if you appreciate it's more performance orientated but if you drive slow and want ultimate comfort then it may not be worth it.

Just wondering whether to wait for a 2024 model as Mazda will have ironed out any initial problems. In the "old days" you wouldn't buy a newly released model because of possible teething problems. And I haven't found out how long delivery is on an Azuma yet so it may be a few months anyway. Will go and check it out next week as the car has now arrived in WA. Thanks again for taking time to reply.

i agonised about waiting for this car to come out before i bough my CX-5 akera diesel ,i watched every review from overseas and after a long period decided on the -5,,,,once i saw that the 6cyc diesel had only a 2000kg towing capacity ,,,the same as cx5, i thought what ami really getting for all the extra cash,,the 0 to 100 is not much difference ,the fuel saving is great , but the main thing is i wanted the lovely nappa leather and the price difference to get the 60 with that is a bit much,,,i will still test drive one just to see what its like to drive,,, very very happy with the diesel cx5 akera,,

Some manufacturers can make good cars but cannot move to a higher tier because their engineers don't drive their own cars everyday - Ride quality is the fundamental factor for success or failure for any model

I assume the diesels have a dpf. If so, and it works anything like the CX5 diesel, the dpf "cleaning" cycle may be in operation for around 10% of the time. During that time CX5 fuel consumption is doubled because of the fuel injected into the exhaust cycle to burn off soot in the dpf. Will be interested to hear how this works out in a newer engine design.

I test-drove the diesel version of this car yesterday. The power, interior design, and exterior appearance are impressive. It felt great driving on flat roads. However, the road noise was quite loud when driving over coarse chip at speed. It's not a quiet highway cruiser; instead, it's loud and boomy. The suspension feels cheap and doesn't effectively absorb bumps or road imperfections. Additionally, there was a small rattle in the dashboard. Overall, I would not recommend this car yet, but I'd like to one day, after Mazda do the engineering properly, and address the asking price. Its unresolved.

Thanks Tom. The best video on this vehicle so far now the inline 6 variants are here. I have a straight 6 petrol Azami on order in Platinum Quartz. A little concerned about the ride quality. Thinking of downsizing the wheels which would be unfortunate as you pay more for the Azami package which includes the 20 inch wheels. It’s a shame the diesel doesn’t have the same towing capacity as the straight six. I want mine for towing a caravan and most comparable vehicles such as Lexus, BMW X3 Audi Q5 or Volvo XC60 (actually more expensive too) don’t have sufficient maximum down ball weight for anything other than a very light weight EU or UK vans which was a factor in choosing the CX60 over those options

Love that there are separate climate and volume controls, really sets it apart. Was hoping this might be my next car, but EVERY review comments on the harsh suspension. Mazda-what are your engineers doing?

@@pjb5594 No, if I consider one I will wait a few years for the bugs to be sorted out. Mostly suspension and transmission. I think they may even fit it with adaptive suspension. That’s a good reason to consider the CX5, it’s well sorted out now.

Brand snobs wanting a luxury SUV and looking to spend north of $80,000 won’t consider a Mazda. Mazda still has the “ohh you drive a Mazda, good cars” reputation.

Guess we'll see. There were already some grades of CX-9 that were pushing $80K on the road, so it isn't entirely new terrain in that sense

Rather be able to drive with spirit than Body roll and understeer ....some people choose other cars for soft ride and numb steering , just my choice to be able to DRIVE.

Got a CX5 myself on 17" wheels and I got to say the firm ride does take a while to get used to, especially having owned other brands that implement a more floaty/plush ride. The CX5's ride quality would be my upper limit with regards to firmness. Obviously, the tradeoff is that it feels planted on highways and you can chuck it into corners without worrying too much about body roll. I can only imagine how jarring the CX60 would feel over bumps and potholes. Thinking twice now about owning a CX60.

In Europe at least Koni make as set of bespoke adaptive dampers for the CX 60 PEHV and, AFAIK, the Diesels as well. Mine are on order from the dealer, blows the suspension warranty out of the water but worth a punt for the price, plus I get to keep my OEM dampers (+/- 2000Km), so a no-brainer for me-

@@chasingcars True, I’ve been waiting for it ever since it was launched in Europe last year. I was able to view it at the Mazda office when they brought the grey colour one some months back. It looked quite good, however two things which didn’t appear to be quite PREMIUM were the back seat space and the door closing sound. Couldn’t get a test drive back then though. With the long wait for the actual launch, I’ve gone ahead and booked a Mahindra xuv700, which seemed to be good compromise for now. Now that cx60 is here, can’t wait to get a test drive of the petrol one to see if I should change mind from xuv700, if cx60 is premium enough etc. 😊

I found the seats on the last two CX-5's I owned were not as comfortable as they should have been. Does the CX-60 solve this?

My first impression was that the seat in the CX-60 has more depth, with a longer seat base. But I will need to test it for a longer period (with our long-term test vehicle) to give you a definitive answer - I will make sure that comes up in our long-term video content.

The cameras at 4:00 is so 2010 quality. Still has the dividers and even then the image quality is subpar.

It's a new platform and it certainly seems to have some rough edges that need some more work. I suspect in five years time it will be a much nicer car, after Mazda has had a couple of goes at refining and reengineering the version one feel out of it. That all said, I am equally interested to see if the move to premium works for Mazda. As a Mazda buyer of several decades, I'm just going to say it, that I would want a lower price point for this car. Yes it looks very nice, but I wouldn't be forking out the money for a Mazda at those prices. I think they are taking a big gamble that they don't leave their old customers behind, while not gaining enough new customers to make the change in market position viable. Time will tell.

I'm waiting for the launch here in Canada for CX-70. Been saving my cash for 2 years. I've been an Acura fan for many years and not sure if this is a better choice for me than a RDX. I've always believed you should never buy a 1st year production model. Might be willing to wait a few years to iron out the realized issues too.

Yes, this is a production model. The stiff ride doesn’t help interior refinement and you can hear some rattles. I’ll track this in our long termer and report back.

If you’re complaining about any car not having a touch screen you don’t deserve to drive a new car. Go home and lock yourself in your room and scroll your phone to satisfy yourself until you fall asleep.

It's interesting point that their focus was a great diesel with phev being an after thought . While I appreciate the choice offered I do question their over arching strategy. Diesel sales esp in Europe has fallen off a cliff, replaced by NEV sales. Certainly engineers leading finance executives. But what does the future hold? I'd rather mazda be around in 10 years that enjoy good rwd biased combustion cars with an expiry date

Yes, it is very interesting. An unusual gamble in 2023. Mazda promises its BEV portfolio will grow from 2025-ish out to a dedicated platform at the end of the decade, but clearly they do see the potential in continuing to sell combustion vehicles like this on a new platform

I think dealer deliveries only commenced last fortnight - they have been advertising the car for months though (but they hadn't arrived in country)

The diesel is a good one, but I'd be surprised if it will achieve mazdas estimated 35% of total sales. More likely maybe 5 % at a stretch . I was In Sydney a few wks ago & got a chance to drive one of the first vehicles to go to a dealer there . Quality is fantastic, vehicle is impressive, but it ain't cheap , & that may put some people off

I'd probably pick the diesel version. But I was shocked when I was told that the petrol version only requires RON91 regular unleaded. It is unique and unnecessary to accept RON91 for a semi-performance car at this price tag.

Yes! We didn't have them in time but here they are (and they are quite high): G40e petrol six (5 years / 75,000km, $3360) - D50e diesel six (5 years / 50,000km, $3217) - P50e plug-in hybrid (5 years / 75,000km,$2590)

Test drove both petrol and diesel. Engine: petrol is more refined but not punchy with huge turbo lag; diesel pulls hard if you push really really hard, not refined quite noisy, also with huge turbo lag. Transmission: very lazy unit, old 6-speed auto in CX-30 is way more responsive than this 8-speed multi-clutch. Chassis: not agile, cannot feel it is rear-wheel biased AWD. Suspension and tires: need better tunning, the suspension is soft but the tires are quite hard, they are not cohesive. not agree with some reviewers about the stiffness of the damper, they are ok. Car: way too heavy and very bad body control, you feel unsafe with huge body roll if you push through some tight corners. Conclusion: maybe more premium than the cx5 on the surface, but way worse than the cx5 when you drive. Autogefühl is right, they need to rework hard on this car in the future, it is very premature if purchase it now

I also test drove petrol and phev. I am not an engineer nor expert but it appears to be the gearbox being too conservative at first and second gears. It doesn’t feel much like a bad turbo lag to me ( my only bad experience is with 1.4 turbo) as the power delivery is quite linear during the process. Even say so I enjoyed the 6 cyclinder especially when going higher speed.

I remember last time Mazda tried to go upmarket with Eunos, they did this just when recession hit and it was a massive failure. This scenario looks like history repeating. I think that Mazda will struggle with this move... the product is worthy, I wish them luck but i just can't see this working given that the brand is not perceived as premium and with the rise of EVs will likely render the drivetrains dinosaurs along with this range.

I really like all your reviews so well done. However please be mindful that you are giving a subjective opinion. When you talk about what is right or needs improvement. Sometimes you come across as being too forceful. Not everyone is going to agree or feel the same way.

Thank you. I acknowledge your view. But on things like ride quality (if that's what you mean), there is actually a correct way for a suspension to behave in terms of damping force - Wikipedia has a good explainer on underdamping, overdamping and critical damping that may interest you. In terms of stiffness (which is a separate concept), this is more subjective, but I am happy to stand behind my opinion as being an expert one. You are free to find an opinion you prefer - or have your own view - but I am satisfied that my view on technical areas like this is accurate.
