Examples: He is looking pretty hot. (he, is, singular words.) The cards are absolutely stacked. (Cards, are, plural.) I just realised there IS not a 100 coin star. Or, since Simple never finished that sentence, I'll also post the are version. I just realised there ARE not 100 coins. Is, Star, singular. Are, coins, plural. Now, you might be asking. "Zoe, in what situations can I tell which word the is/are is referencing!" That's a super easy question. What the sentence is *about,* more or less. I'll repost the sentences from above and bold their subjects, or *what the sentence is about.* *He* is looking pretty hot. *The cards* are absolutely stacked. I just realised there is not a 100 coin *star.* I just realised there are not 100 *coins.* TLDR: Is=singular and are=plural. Match it with the main subject of the sentence. Super BONUS 1billion IQ quiz: why are the subjects of the last two sentences at the rear of the sentence, and not the first noun (as sentences usually go)

Answers!! They're each actually compound sentences!! "i just realised" is its own complete clause, same as "There isn't a 100 coin star." The word there is a very fluid word, and in this instance does NOTHING more than throw a wrench into regular English rules, as English likes to have wrenches!! But that isn't what this lesson is about! Class dismissed!!!!
