..Numbersixvalverde ridden by Neil Madden and trained by Martin Brassil wins the 2006 Grand National from the 2005 winner Hedgehunter......nine of the forty runners completed the course...the fewest since 2001.....

Great to watch this again...Numbersixvalverde a worthy winner, jumped and travelled well all the way round. Brilliantly ridden by "Slippers Madden" in what was his first National ride. An ex Irish Grand National winner who loved the big unique National Fences of Aintree.

Tony O'Hehir , who provided the commentary for Beecher's Brook to the Canal turn is the son of Michael O'Hehir who was the commentator for the Foinavon pile-up in 1967.

Hedgehunter might have won 3 years in a row: Second here by 10 lengths, 2005 won by 14 lengths. 2004 in the lead until the final jump, which he missed and fells. So near, but yet so far....Hedgehunter to me is Number One!!!!!

Such a shame Billy Cassidy took that nasty fall after putting in such a superb round of jumping before. I hope the horse was alright, it looked a really bad fall.

Have you got the 1979 National with Alverton putting in an exhibition round of jumping until Becher's second time? Also 2007 onwards on the BBC?

No horse since Golden Miller has won the CGC and GN in the same season. Garrison Savannah came close, second to Seagram in 1991. Rough Quest was second then went onto win it in 1996 and there are many other combinations. It takes a great feat of training to produce a horse at the GN after running only three weeks before around Cheltenham and being placed.
