Having retired from the state police many years ago, I found this quite amusing, because in the early 80's the men who actually worked during the era of this film were still around, and a lot of them were remarkable characters. Here in deep southern Illinois, a very rural area, before the cars were equipped with radios, the troopers were issued rolls of dimes. When they went through a small town, they were supposed to stop and call the district to see if there were any calls waiting. If there was an urgent call, headquarters would call the local funeral home or some other local business that had a small red light mounted on the building, and they'd turn the light on to let any passing trooper know that they had an urgent call.

Either that, or those businesses were offering " other " services when they had their red lights on. 😱

Retired NYSP. Where I worked in the Adirondack Mtns, radio reception was pretty iffy back in the day. We could receive usually but calling back was a real trial. We knew the location of every pay phone (remember those?!!) in our patrol areas. You were lucky, they didn't give us any dimes!!!!

Detroit currently has the Project Green Light an initiative between area businesses and the Detroit Police Department. It started, in January 2016, with eight gas stations. You now see the program’s flashing green lights all over town. Over 200 locations participate, including fast food restaurants, grocery stores and even apartment buildings. The belief that the program reduces crime has led to a number of community groups demanding businesses in their neighborhoods take part. The high definition video at these locations can be viewed by the DPD in real time. Thankyou officer Melvin for that fascinating connection to the past.

I was born in 1951. These old TV shows seem a bit quaint , but like The Twilight Zone, and many other shows of that era, they could pack a lot of entertainment in 30 minutes. The writing was extremely "tight". Seeing these episodes on KZbin is a treat!

Born 1952. Lived in S California until 35 and worked in Chatsworth after college, lived in Granada Hills, Lancaster, Edwards, Newberry Park, West LA,, college in Brentwood, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach. We had a '57 Dodge exactly like the one they drive in some of the episodes. My wife grew up in Chatsworth until high school. Went to Disneyland the first time the second year it was open. I lived at Edwards AFB in elementary school. So the entire highway patrol series is driving around the same roads I was on at the same time. In the movie "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood", they show the movie "Quest for Fire" on the marque on the Cinerama in Hollywood, I saw that movie there at the time portrayed. The first part of the movie "The Right Stuff" was at Edwards, the houses the Astronauts lived in were exactly as the one I lived in there, at the same time as the real events. I have been to Pancho Barne's Happy Bottom Riding Academy and saw Pancho several times. One office I worked at was near Culver City tv studios and they used the street right outside our office to film "Chips". I worked in downtown LA in the building they used to film the exteriors for "LA Law". Countless movies and tv shows were filmed in S CA, so if I watch vintage media, it frequently looks like some part of my life.

I grew up watching the series Highway Patrol. Broadrick Crawford held the episodes in suspense. His dialog gave superiority and.. total control. Loved every one couldn't wait until the next one. I even wanted to be a police officer back then at 5 years old. The country was moral and strong and we recited the pledge every morning before school with our hands on our hearts and thanks to God for our founding fathers. What an era it was to live.

At the end of a show or movie, I usually let the closing credits roll and watch. Sometimes interesting things pop out. Like this time. Note the Audio Supervisor was Quinn Martin. He learned his craft well. Martin later went on to head his own quite impressive production company QM Productions. He had at least one television series running in prime time every year for 21 straight years. The late Martin became a member of the Television Hall of Fame, having been inducted in 1997. He produced some 20 television movies and created more than 15 series, most notably crime and law enforcement dramas The Untouchables (1959-63), The Fugitive (1963-67), The F.B.I. (1965-74), Cannon (1971-76), The Streets of San Francisco (1972-77), and Barnaby Jones (1973-80). Also great to see how far the then bit actor Clint Eastwood has come since then.

@coogan8825 yeah, if I hung out at the Spahn Ranch in the isolated, hidden away Santa Susana Pass. Otherwise Los Angeles is a big big city. So your chances of running into Manson (as so many claim to have done) were fairly miniscule. And back in the late 60s, there was no shortage of characters who were spitting images of Manson: glazed eyes, beard, long stringy hair, dressed like a homeless person. There were thousand of Manson look-alikes prowling L.A. at that time. But folks would prefer to believe that they ran into the real deal. Unlikely.

Minimalist? I think the reason is cheap production. I have to smile that in the big final scene, Crawford and the other cop don't even hide or crouch down in a car. They are standing across the street "spying" on the hothead guy. Doesn't he see them??!? It's as if the director said, "While we're filming you here across the street for another scene, we'll just have you say these other lines, and we'll save time by eliminating another set-up."

You can tell from this short episode that Mr. Eastwood was going to be a star. I was in San Francisco in the late 70’s for a business meeting. I was in the Hotel’s bar when one of the business persons with me said there was a movie star in the bar. As I started to look around Clint Eastwood began walking out past us. The guy I was with said hi to Mr. Eastwood and Eastwood said said hi back. He seemed to be a nice guy. Since I have ridden motorcycles since 1968 this episode interest me how it would turn out.

Oakland Tribune, Tuesday, January 24, 1956--Clint Eastwood, a 25-year-old Hollywood newcomer who is described as a "young Gary Cooper," revealed the other day that he hails from Oakland. He's going to be seen as Carol Channing's love interest in "The First Travelling Saleslady," which stars Ginger Rogers. Eastwood parlayed a bit part on TV into his screen role after producer-director Arthur Lubin caught his performance in one of the "Highway Patrol" series. The young Oaklander had some Bay Area little theater experience, he said, prior to working in television.
