I am a lucky owner of a 1290 R 2021, I had the chance to drive the 890 R for a week. The ideal is to have both of them. What a show!!!

Where were the biggest diffs? Weight and power mainly? Or off-road capability ? I am torn between the 890R and 1290R. If I could score a Rally then I would just get that.

@@techustle hello, given that I am a motorcycle tourist and not a pure enduro rider, in my experience, I would prefer the 890 R to have fun in the dirt, lightness and power ok. the 1290 R ADV, she is the queen but in the strait I still don't have that mastery in managing her weight. there is no lack of power😁

This is going to be my new bike! (1290) I have convinced my missus (they always nag when we want a new toy) and im selling an old merc e320 i have and my VT 1100. Many years ago i had a super tenere 750 and i know how much fun these bikes are.. Thanks Chris for the review. greetings from Melb Vic

i think i have a solution to help decide which one to get, if you can only have one bike just get the 890R but if you can also have a dedicated enduro bike on your garage then get the 1290 SAR

Both bikes look awesome, yet looking at them side by side I think it looks obvious that the 890 is definitely the one for wild high adrenaline fun, whereas the 1290 is going to get you where you want to be 95% of the time. I don’t ride KTM, not because I don’t like them it is more to do with seat height, although saying that I upgraded from the CRF250 rally to a Triumph Tiger900 Rally Pro so I am really at the limit for seat height and yes if it was a bit lower I am sure my confidence would increase. At 5’6” the options are limited. I think it would just be great to have the money to have a stable of bikes Ian Back on Two Wheels

Moment arm for the gas in the roll direction has been reduced. So to counteract the same moment generated there takes less rider force in it at the bar with the same moment arm as before.

Actually it did help Mr Birch. I'm in the middle of this question right now. Looking for something to replace my CB500X with the Rally Raid kit. Bike is nice but just not enough power to put a smile on my face. I'm looking to get something new in about a month. '23 1290R, '23 890R, or maybe even a GSA. Leaning towards the 1290R but it's going to be a close decision.

I'd rather have the 890 advR with Rottweiler Performance upgrades. It will really improve the power immediately and you can still take it up single track and 85 mph on highway with a passenger.

I can't imagine the torque of the 1200 , and being able to ride from 40 (kph I guess) to 140 in 4th, that is amazing.

No mention of how to negotiate the MASSIVE hole in your wallet at service intervals. More weight on the rear? Lower the tire pressure?

Stick to your 1090. Period! That's the latest true "kind of pure" adv bike. The closest one to the legendary 990 at least!

Its always a new model isn't it Chris? How about you make a video about your true love, the 950? I'm sure a lot of people dont have money for the new stuff , and I bet a lot (like me) want to see something more close to the earth. I dont want to say stop with the new models, because, lets face it , you re a KTM ambassador , but the 950, thats what I really want to see. Thanks!

Don't dare ride a new 890 adventure R then. Speaking from experience having a outrageously modified 990, there is simply no comparison.

Deciding factor was where either bike was manufactured. One in China One in Austria 👍

I own a 2021 390 adventure, 2021 890 adventure s, 2022 890 adventure r and the 2022 1290 super adventure r. The 1290 super adventure r is the turd in the punch bowl. Doesn't have the load capacity to ride 2 up with gear, the 160hp gives it the same power to weight ratio as the 890. the 1290 90 is to heavy and bulky to have any fun adventure riding and you had better have a buddy with you if you drop it. The 890 S with offroad tires is the work horse of the bunch.

Just picked up an 890 adventure R. To be honest if these had been available I may be riding one. Super impressed with the 890 and it is just ace's compared to the 990. What is the riders feeling surrounding the weight difference of the 890/1290 and picking the 1290 up vs the 890?

Excellent video Chris. Here’s another tricky question for you. Is the new 1290R worth selling a paid off mint 1190R and financing the difference? Or just keep Lovin the paid for amazing 1190R?

Chris, is the side stand on the 1290 still attached to the crankcase and if so, is it a problem? Love the colour of that 1290 - a bit like my GO!!!! 950 😁

That’s what I thought until I rode the 890r. Went from an 1190r to the 890r. The clutch is light with excellent modulation.
